Coach Golden talks about the Defense on WQAM good news....

His point about the offense is a dumb one. We are Miami, where fast players grow in orange groves… Miami has and always will have (except the Brian Monroe years), had game breakers that can take it to the house any given play. Next year with Coley, Duke and Dorsett, we cannot afford to play big ten football and have methodical drives. We have to play to our strengths. We score fast, well then play an aggressive D that can get some turnovers and negative plays. Instead of a soft piece of crap, that allows everything in front of us bending not breaking.

Golden angers and alienates me with messaging on the defense...he trumps stats to show that the defense is improving however that improvement is so marginal and minuscule a difference from 2012 with a softer schedule that I feel like he takes me as an idiot. I tell Golden to spare me the BS, those stats are not worthy of being mentioned as anything to hang a hat on and are an utter disservice to the standards, traditions and legacy of Miami Football over the last 30 years.

What I want to hear is that the defensive performance is unacceptable, that we are simplifying the scheme, going to go to a more aggressive style and working on blitz disguising.

## Encouraging news for those who want to see UM blitz more and play more man coverage:*Al Golden said last week UM will be more aggressive in its defensive approach this season.

Here's how Golden answered when WQAM’s Channing Crowder asked Golden what he says to people who criticize him about his loyalty to defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio.*

"It doesn't have anything to do with my loyalty to D'Onofrio," he said. "It has to do with: We*were better this year than last year. And*two seasons ago we played 14 or 15 freshmen on defense. Now we're
better. We've been trying to add to that and improve on defense during a very difficult time.

"Here's what our defense was good enough to do last year: They were good enough to win nine. Now we've got to get better and win more games. The offense wasn't good on third down [or] time of possession. Both of those directly impact defense.

"Anybody who wants to blitz and play cover 1, who wouldn't want to do that? We feel we have a group here that is going to allow us to be more aggressive. The deeper you are, the more athletic you are, the more things you can do.*******

"You can call all the pressers you want. If your fourth and fifth [rushers] aren't getting there, someone is hung out to dry down the field. We've made a lot of progress there, adding 14 guys [on defense] that can help us.*Most of our guys that had interceptions, sacks, caused fumbles are returning. Why would we abort right now?"

Here we go again. Different day, same bull****. Blame the offense. Give undue credit to the defense.

"The defense was 9-0, but the offense was 0-4."

In 7 of our wins (take away the FAU and SavState wins), here are our defensive/offensive averages and how they would rank nationally.

Defense:
24 points/game - 52nd
421 yards/game - 87th

Offense:
36 points/game -20th
432 yards/game - 43rd

Now, was it the offense or the defense that won those 7 games?

His statement about the offense was more about converting on 3rd downs thus controlling the ball longer.
fact is when we needed to convert on key 3rd downs we couldn't. I'm all about quick strikes as I'm sure Golden is as well. But when you need to convert on 3rd downs you have to convert on 3rd downs. We were last in the ACC on 3rd down and TOP. Last..
No defending this.
Look at GT, there defense wasn't any better as ours, they just had an offense that controlled the ball and kept the defense off the field.
UF is another team.. You really think they had a top 10 defense? Not really. They just had an offense that possessed the ball for 33 minutes per game on average while our offense possessed it 26 minutes. nearly a 8 minute differential.

So his point is very valid.

I hate to say it but I actually feel the defense will be a lot better this year just because it cant get any worse. It wont really matter because we are running more 3-4 and we'll be spread out like Jam by any offense in the ACC.

The defense was 88th in the country on 3rd downs. Let's not act like they were getting themselves off the field, either.

I think he's right, the defense will be better this year, and the talent upgrade will allow them to do more. They won't have to rely as much on the offense to control the ball (which they couldn't do) and keep them off the field. More will be expected of them (and him) over the next 1-2 years.

People totally misinterpret what he says, and think he's blaming the offense for everything. Think about it, he's telling you that "the defense was so terrible, the offense needed to keep them on the bench for us to have any chance to win the game" (my paraphrase). Anyone who's being objective here realizes that.

Not sure if serious.

What are you smoking?

That's because the offense wasn't controlling the ball the way they should. The defense can't do everything.

Who the **** are we gonna get to run the offense once Coley leaves? Your QB is injured all year, you lost your two biggest threats early and yet your head corch blames your offense for the ineptness of his defense.

You are obviously talking about the class we just signed. Who do you see as contributing right away?

He is a used car salesman... Sad thing is many here will slurp this up.

I'm slurping, only because of the fact that not fielding a team of Cornileous, Highsmigh, Gaines, Green and Rodgers means that we cant do any worse. That's 100 yds right there.

Oh and not having to watch every drive where the defense blitz our offense on third down and with our quarterback throwing the ball at a receivers feet is got to be good for 50 yds a game for the defense.
