Coach Golden talks about the Defense on WQAM good news....

Here is the best part about the SOS argument. Supporters of Golden try to say, "but the SOS this year was the same as the previous years." What they fail to mention is our SOS got a significant boost once we played a top 10 Louisville in a bowl game where as in previous years we got no bowl game. If we had a bowl game, our SOS would have risen in those years also.

I honestly liked the interview and then it slapped me in the face when he blatantly threw the offense under the bus for the sole purpose of defending Dnofrio and the defense. I'm sorry, but his continuous deflection of the blame regarding our issues is getting disgusting. At this point, he's not just throwing them under the bus, he is driving it too and continuously backing over the offense. Anything to deflect blame from the defense.

If this was not pure deflection of blame for the sole purpose of saving his boy or his own scheme, he would gladly acknowledge that the defense sucked just fine without the offense sucking. I have no problem with him pointing out the deficiency of the offense, but lets not act like the defense gets a gold star for their own 3rd down efficiency.

Despite my doubt in Golden up to this point, I've still supported him in hopes that he will get the job done, but his continual deflection of the facts is getting ridiculous and I will not support him for much longer when his bias "clouds" proper judgement that the **** that's happening with his defense ain't working.

I think he's right, the defense will be better this year, and the talent upgrade will allow them to do more. They won't have to rely as much on the offense to control the ball (which they couldn't do) and keep them off the field. More will be expected of them (and him) over the next 1-2 years.

People totally misinterpret what he says, and think he's blaming the offense for everything. Think about it, he's telling you that "the defense was so terrible, the offense needed to keep them on the bench for us to have any chance to win the game" (my paraphrase). Anyone who's being objective here realizes that.

You are obviously talking about the class we just signed. Who do you see as contributing right away?

I'm talking about all of it. Sophomores becoming juniors, freshmen becoming sophomores, the senior class (jags) being gone, juco defensive tackles, freshmen linemen and linebackers providing depth (and possibly a couple of them contributing heavily), etc.

And if we were going into his 2nd year and we didn't have 3 years of data I might hold out hope. But that isn't the case. Even with all 5 stars across the board this D will be average at best. We are at a huge schematic disadvantage running what we do. I don't see that changing.

You might very well be right. I'm just not there yet, as I would like to see how that defense does with better players than he was forced to trot out there last year. Especially that line.

His point about the offense is a dumb one. We are Miami, where fast players grow in orange groves… Miami has and always will have (except the Brian Monroe years), had game breakers that can take it to the house any given play. Next year with Coley, Duke and Dorsett, we cannot afford to play big ten football and have methodical drives. We have to play to our strengths. We score fast, well then play an aggressive D that can get some turnovers and negative plays. Instead of a soft piece of crap, that allows everything in front of us bending not breaking.

His statement about the offense was more about converting on 3rd downs thus controlling the ball longer.
fact is when we needed to convert on key 3rd downs we couldn't. I'm all about quick strikes as I'm sure Golden is as well. But when you need to convert on 3rd downs you have to convert on 3rd downs. We were last in the ACC on 3rd down and TOP. Last..
No defending this.
Look at GT, there defense wasn't any better as ours, they just had an offense that controlled the ball and kept the defense off the field.
UF is another team.. You really think they had a top 10 defense? Not really. They just had an offense that possessed the ball for 33 minutes per game on average while our offense possessed it 26 minutes. nearly a 8 minute differential.

So his point is very valid.
What are you smoking?

Golden's cack.

Wow F.A.G. will say anything to defend the defense and his friend.Yeah the offense wasn't good on third down but neither was the defense. He talks about how that effects the defense but what about the defense allowing opposing offenses to stay on the field and take time of possesion away from the offense. Then its not about yards but points so they allow offenses to drive down the field and if they don't give up a touchdown or a field goal they continually give their offense horrible field position. Why does he have to bring down the offense everytime the defense is being questioned? They both affect each other yet according to him the defense was the reason we won nine games. GTFOH golden.

Really speaks well to your limitations.

The Miami defense must get off the field on third down, period. We've heard and seen this act going on four years now. It's time to produce or show D500 the freaking door. The sad thing is that it won't matter if D500 is shown the door next year because the philosophy will remain the same so long as Golden is HC. I can here the excuse now after D500 is shown the door. " Well, we were breaking in a new d-coordinator and it takes time for the kids to get acclimated to the new scheme and all." Meanwhile we will still be giving up 500 yards on defense. ***** that....The scheme/system just doesn't fit with our recruiting base and personnel, and if Golden doesn't see that he too can step, kick rocks and count light poles on the way out of Coral Gables.

I've said this 1000 times. I don't even get the point of pointing any hate toward D'Ono. It's up to Coach Golden whether or not we adjust the philosophy.

The hate is due here because Golden won't part ways with his BFF. In the grand scheme of things, however, D500 is just a pawn. Golden is the power piece on the board and will use D500 as the final sacrificial move to attempt to save face. Most of the Cane nation, however, will see though this and see Golden for what is truly is.

Bottom line is, guy is going to live and die by his defense. He's not canning Dorito so we need to hope for the best.

The ONE thing I have held out some modicum of hope for, is that they coached scared the last two years, because they felt they were really up sh*ts creek personnel wise. I dont think they had much faith in the guys we had, and they coached scared trying to minimize the potential damage. Now... we can obviously argue about how successful the approach was, but he's not totally full of sh*t by saying as bad as it was, we still managed to win 9 games and go to a bowl. He's also not lying in that the offense really did a bad defense no favors last year. I mean real talk, but catastrophic mistakes cost us the VT game, and we could have had a fighting chance in the bowl against UL had the offense been able to do anything. The personnel situation on the defense is as bad as anything I remember on this team since 1997. The losses of EJ, Terry and Paul, simply crushed our depth at LB. Our talent and depth at S was also terrible. We also suffered from a total lack of a true NT, as Porter just never really took to the position, and Renfrow was a career backup at UVA who was the very definition of JAG.

I have held out a glimmer of hope, that with better players and more faith in their personnel, they WOULD get more aggressive and creative. They did play more aggressive at Temple, and even in their first year. I know people think Im an AG slurper and apologist, but the reality is I just feel we have no choice but to hope that these guys have a plan, and that they arent as clueless as they appear on defense.

There will be ABSOLUTELY NO excuse next year for not being able to play more aggressive man coverages, with TH, Gunter and Burns having experience. That is as good a trio of CBs as pretty much anyone in the country has. Bush and Jenkins healthy and with another year of experience, with hopefully Carter finally getting some burn, and maybe a kid like Hester stepping up, should really boost the talent level at S. I dont see how Huertlou and Wyche can be much worse than Porter and Renfrow. Chick and DP come back. AQM and McCord should be bigger, better and solid contributors. The major question marks will be Figs, Kirby, Armbrister, and who if anyone can step up at LB.

Next year is make or break for AG. If the defense is a disaster again, he's going to be mortally wounded as an HC. At a bare minimum he will have to shed Dorito, and by then its going to look like Coker's desperation when he slaughtered half his staff after the LSU debacle.

I DO think, that if this offense can sustain some drives, and keep the defense off the field more, its going to help no matter what happens. I mean the defense cant HELP but to improve if we have an offense that can actually convert some first downs and put together some sustained drives.

I cant honestly say I have much faith, but I have to at least try to hope that they can turn the corner on defense next year. We dont have to be lights out, but it needs to be at least an "average" defense in Division 1. It cant just collapse like it did late this year, and my hope is that better depth will help prevent that, at least to the degree we saw this year.
