Camp Report: Scrimmage #2

Perryman = Debo
Gus = Red

Lazy blocking by McDermott. Looks like 73 clobbered 11.

What else is new, guy is a total liability on the line. Suck that he is our only option at C.

Looks like an unbalanced line to the right. Sandland and Dobard are blocking on the left, while Flowers, Darling, Isidora are all right of McDermott, Gall looks to be LG. Not sure why they look to be running a FB lead to the weak side though, unless they are setting up some sort of play action with the boot action.

only real problem i saw from that was the Coley TD.

6 yard line. Defense in a zone. Crossing route and nobody is within 10 yards of him. You only have to cover 16 yards of field, and there are 11 guys on defense (allegedly anyway) and we allow a WR to stand there, wide open in the middle of the endzone.

The other stuff (ie Yearby, Duke, Coley, our TEs) making plays... I'm totally cool with. We have some elite talent on offense.

But there's not a team in America that couldn't have scored on that 6 yard pass play. How can we not clean that **** up?

that was one play.... step away from the ledge. The defense balled yesterday

True but it's representative of a larger problem we've had and we (possibly) continue to have. Goal line situation - we drop into across the field zone and the QB has time to throw. That has killed us in the past and will continue to kill us.

god**** right

juwon young is not in the video. that's darrion owens wearing #58. also i would hope that any collegiate player regardless of walk-on or on scholarship would have the cojones to make that block so i'm gonna believe he just missed his objective
Im starting to believe my boy perryman got beef with gus

No kidding...

Look at the way Regula completely avoids Perryman and goes after Juwon Young, who was already being blocked by Dobard. I guess it's a good thing he's a walk-on...and this wasn't a real game.

No way that Regula did not see DP. I think Regula knew that if he engaged Perryman it was going to look real bad for him when it was time to go over the film. By avoiding contact, ended up looking really bad anyway. Kid went to the line with zero aggression.

Honest question. Did anybody happen to notice who we had rushing on that play?

At 6:12 of the video it's like this from Left to Right:

AQM, Moten, Wyche, Chick, McCord

Moten and McCord got there just after the ball was released.

Well Regula is our starting fullback.

Key thing I've noticed all camp, especially in the scrimmage videos, is that our defensive line is not getting pushed 10 yards into the 2nd level.
They're not getting pushed back at all, and we have a good to very good offensive line.

Obviously, this is not the same defense as last year.
They look 100% better in all levels.

And it's been working so well.

This is another one of those things that is great in theory but execution is another story. It's so tough to be willing to give up yards but then turn into a elite defense when the offense gets close to scoring range. It's a fine line that is really easy to cross.
What I don't understand is, why not attempt to prevent yards as well as scoring.

Because yards don't really matter, at the end of the day if you keep points off the board it was successful, regardless of how it happened. The problem lies in the fact that you basing the success of your defense on a few key things like turnovers, and you HAVE to stop them on 3rd down otherwise you just keep bending and eventually break. I don't have any doubt that this can be successful, but I do doubt if it can be successful and consistent. I think trying to dominate everything aggressively on defense is a more consistent approach to success. Defenses like bama or tcu or msu (all who run very different schemes) are good because they try to dominate every down, they have a aggressive mindset and attitude. My hope is that this year, because of the talent improvement, they become more proactive in trying to force turnovers and stops. It's still going to be a soft bend but don't break defense but hopefully they do something to bridge the gap between ultra conservative and really aggressive.

I will never understand the argument that yards do not matter. If your opponent has put 400+ yards on you that means they have held possession of the ball for a great deal of the game. In addition, it leads to your Defense getting tired because it can not get off the field and your Offense isn't going to be clicking because it never has the ball. Add a turnover or two on Offense and you are bleeped. You do not have to take my word for it, just watch film for the last several years and see for yourself if yards do not matter.

You're equating yards with ToP, which are not really connected. Here is the top 15 in total offense followed by there ToP ranking

1. Baylor - 112
2. Oregon - 122
3. Fresno St - 100
4. Texas A&M - 115
5. Northern Ill - 95
6. FSU - 71
7. Ohio st - 33
8. Texas Tech -98
9. Indiana - 120
10. Clemson - 110
11. Auburn - 49
12. Marshall -114
13. Washington - 93
14. BYU - 105
15. San Jose st - 43

At the end of the day its about points, everything else is secondary. Would you care how many yards we gave up if the defense could consistently get stops on 3rd down? Part of the formula has been working, Teams generally need multiple play drives to get down the field and score on us, on those drives are multiple 3rd downs that the defense just folds (88th last year for 3rd down defense). We get a stop on any one of those and the drive is over, points are avoided. Like I said I dont really agree with the approach of sitting back that much, but if plays are made on those key moments it can work.

Switch molten with Chad and I'd really like that front

What I see in that play is that the DTs have taken up all the linemen so DP was free to roam. That is the key. Look at #11 he's trying to hold the OL. That is a true DT move right there...lol Sometimes your job is to take up blockers and keep them off guys. You notice the DL on that play are Chick, OP, Wyche and 93? Not sure but that seems like they must have been in Nickel, or a 4-3 look, cause I see DP, 58, and 28 in there. Interesting fron right there

It absolutely matters. I'm too lazy to look it up but there is definitely a correlation between YPG/YPP (take your pick) and points scored.
