Camp Report: Scrimmage #2

only real problem i saw from that was the Coley TD.

6 yard line. Defense in a zone. Crossing route and nobody is within 10 yards of him. You only have to cover 16 yards of field, and there are 11 guys on defense (allegedly anyway) and we allow a WR to stand there, wide open in the middle of the endzone.

The other stuff (ie Yearby, Duke, Coley, our TEs) making plays... I'm totally cool with. We have some elite talent on offense.

But there's not a team in America that couldn't have scored on that 6 yard pass play. How can we not clean that **** up?

that was one play.... step away from the ledge. The defense balled yesterday

Lazy blocking by McDermott. Looks like 73 clobbered 11.

True but it's representative of a larger problem we've had and we (possibly) continue to have. Goal line situation - we drop into across the field zone and the QB has time to throw. That has killed us in the past and will continue to kill us.

It's okay -- yards don't matter.

This is what Dnofrio has been saying since he got here.he's not concerned with how many yards his defense gives up just keep them from scoring.
And it's been working so well.

This is another one of those things that is great in theory but execution is another story. It's so tough to be willing to give up yards but then turn into a elite defense when the offense gets close to scoring range. It's a fine line that is really easy to cross.
What I don't understand is, why not attempt to prevent yards as well as scoring.

Because yards don't really matter, at the end of the day if you keep points off the board it was successful, regardless of how it happened. The problem lies in the fact that you basing the success of your defense on a few key things like turnovers, and you HAVE to stop them on 3rd down otherwise you just keep bending and eventually break. I don't have any doubt that this can be successful, but I do doubt if it can be successful and consistent. I think trying to dominate everything aggressively on defense is a more consistent approach to success. Defenses like bama or tcu or msu (all who run very different schemes) are good because they try to dominate every down, they have a aggressive mindset and attitude. My hope is that this year, because of the talent improvement, they become more proactive in trying to force turnovers and stops. It's still going to be a soft bend but don't break defense but hopefully they do something to bridge the gap between ultra conservative and really aggressive.

I saw gaping holes in our zone D again. Just sayin...

I am so sick of seeing our Defense not getting off the field. I am dumbfounded that this continues to be an issue at Miami, and it doesn't look like it's going to change in 2014.

Appreciate the response.

Is this the third season we've been given fall camp reports? It's just been real awesome to have these, in addition to the Raising Canes, even though they've tapered off this off-season. I've got opinions on what I've seen this spring & fall, but even so, I've not seen enough to debate them.

@ 2:35 that ref saw his life flash before him, in addition to Grace making up ground on that run play. But yeah, killer camp report.

I will never understand the argument that yards do not matter. If your opponent has put 400+ yards on you that means they have held possession of the ball for a great deal of the game. In addition, it leads to your Defense getting tired because it cannot get off the field and your Offense isn't going to be clicking because it never has the ball. Add a turnover or two on Offense and you are bleeped. You do not have to take my word for it, just watch film for the last several years and see for yourself if yards do not matter.
