Basketball school

Basketball school or not let’s just be happy that athletics is being taken seriously by this admin.

I’ve spoken about this before and I’ll say it again. Any competent AD with a supportive admin should have no problem in making Miami and athletic powerhouse.

Someone just had to convince the school that it benefits UM as a whole if athletics are elite.

I get it. I have degrees from three different ACC schools ( If you count maryland).

But Coach L is such a class act and this program was nothing. It is hard not to be a huge fan.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching UM hoop. I was a fan back when you all had Leonard Hamilton as HC.

Coach L is a Bronxite, and very easy to like.

Wishing you well accept against us my Redmen.

Don't the baseball team make it to Omaha.............................WE BYKE!!!!

Of course you did. That’s literally what my quoted post said.

Also Canes basketball has been around since the 80s and Canes baseball has been successful since the 70s. Not sure what your point is about basketball and baseball.

**** ******* right I did! My cousin played football at Jefferson HS in Tampa. I remember dudes playing pickup games of football in the street during the middle of the night. They always played with a Hurricanes ball.never seen no **** like that in NY. Basketball, break dancing, not no football.

Anyways, I was like eight and didn't know who they were until I saw them on TV the following season. Dudes were blowing out everyone, talking smack, dancing on the sidelines, gold chains, and ****.

You honestly sound like a ****. I wish you well.

To answer baseball, my team is the Canes.

But if you're talking MLB, it often depended on spring training and TV. Turner had the Braves on TV, and they had Spring at Municipal Stadium (RIP) in West Palm Beach. Hence, there were lots of Braves fans in the area. I'm sure you have a lot of Sox fans in Ft. Myers for similar reasons (Cards/Mets in PSL, etc).

I awas born in 86, so Canes basketball was always a thing during my lifetime. Can't say for sure what I would have done, other than root against UF and FSU all day every day.

Apologies for the confusion.

I was referring to MLB and the NBA... Floridians HAD to root for teams from other places, basically had no choice. This is why a lot of Floridians grew up rooting for teams from other cities in thise sports, and many still do to this day.

Simple stuff.

These posts are stupid. What baseball and basketball teams did Floridians grow up watching since there were none back in the day?

I grew up in NY.

St John’s is my basketball team. I became a Cane fan in the 80s while spending the summer in Florida. Some of us never grew up in CFB rich areas, or attended UM.

I went to Bronx Community College, NYU, and Columbia. Loved across the street from Fordham University.

Who the f am I supposed to be rooting for?
I agree. I’m from Minneapolis and root for every team in that state. Miami is the only team I root for outside of Minnesota. I became a Miami football fan first and just adopted the rest. I guess if that makes me less of a fan so be it.

Yeah, man. Unfortunately, we're not as real as some of the super fans on CIS.

He's likely talking about the pros. Growing up in S FL, you didn't have teams to root for and some people became baseball fans of a team because they had spring training in their town.

As for our baseball team, if you're in the 40 to 60 range, there's a good chance you repped Miami baseball. Basketball though, it was basically a ghost team. Good luck finding their games on television unless we played a good team.

Florida has so many fans that have all kinds of different allegiances to a sports team. ****, I'd bet that more than half in the stadium on a big game day have multiple teams in various sports.

As for the Marlins and Heat, I don't watch either pro sport. When I was younger, they didn't even exist. I was already a fan of other teams then. Same as a bunch of people.

Kind of rambled on there, but hope you see the point. Growing up where he did, he could've been a fan of Miami basketball of baseball, but only through the newspaper. He'd never see them on television.

I’m not sure how as a fan of college sports, you can’t be ecstatic about having success in basketball. The tourney is the greatest sports event in the world. And speaking as someone who lives in a basketball dominated area, the run Coach L has taken this program on is nothing short of a miracle. And IMO a Sweet 16/Elite 8 means more than winning a NY6 bowl. I think most fans who live outside of football dominated Florida, would say the same thing. The attention the tourney gets is second to none.

And I say this as someone who would rather watch a college football game than anything. I’d much rather be winning in football, but having a great basketball program is nothing to turn your nose up at.
Again I can only speak for myself. But I think some people have real problems understanding one thing is severely different from another. You can say and mean I love how we're doing in basketball right now. You can also be that same individual and take exception to people saying we are a basketball school. That's all. Somehow this seems to have turned into a thread about no one wants to see us doing well at our own school. And as a result our people on here do is take shots at each other. If you're actually a university of Miami fan then you should take pride in any success we have in any sport. But you should also be able to separate something in the now from something that's gave our school historically a national presence. So that doesn't take away let's go win us a title in college basketball let's get to the elite eight let's get to the final four. It's simply being proud we're having the success. And then saying we still are what we are, we are a football school.

I get what you mean. I even agree with you. To be clear, I never said we weren’t a football school.

But honestly it’s not that ridiculous to say we’ve *become* a basketball school. At least to people who are high school to college age. They’ve seen more basketball success than football and it’s not even close. Gotta get out of the good old days and remember the primary audience has never seen a relevant Miami football team.
