Barry jackson sports buzz: my proof the defense quit

How much worse would our defense numbers would've been if we didn't play Savanah State or FAU??

Well, the defense was ranked in the 90's this go-around. 116 last time. I would venture to guess that it would have been very close to 116 if not worse.

OUR D NEEDS A MORE GRIND IT OUT BALL CONTROL KILL CLOCK KINDA OFFENSE

THIS YEAR TOO MUCH ALL OUT 3 AND OUT TYPE OF OFFENSE

i think golden is giving him another year because he felt he didnt have experienced talent. his first year here we werent that bad.

We weren't as bad the first year because he still ran a similar scheme to what we ran under Shannon. The closer we move to what Golden and No D wants the worse we look.

How can ANYONE defend Golden or his real son and full time lover poo Doritos at this point?

We're ****ed. Golden needs to find a way to get rid of his butt buddy.

ny, Goldens boy being fired won't change a thing. Time to understand that the defense will improve only when a new HC is named.

As long as Golden's here, the defense will never be elite. But a change in coordinator can't make things any worse. D'Onofrio may be the worst DC in the FBS.

I agree with the players who are frustrated.

If the DL can't get pressure then D'Onofrio needs to fire up some Rex Ryan style blitzes. I'd rather give up 500 yards because we were aggressive with opportunities for turnovers and big plays than 500 yards of them just running circles around the defense and Miami just standing around allowing it to happen.

You can't spend three years training Dlinemen to hold onto offensive linemen and then suddenly expect them to know how to AVOID them instead so the can get to QB. Our blitzes suck because there is no organic pressure on the QB for dline-- and that is by design. Our old defenses where always is "rush the passer mode". Meet me at the QB and play the run on the way was basic rule. We will never get pressure with Al's defense. It's design is like the PSU D that beat Vinny and JJ. Frustrate the QB and OC by denying the big play and hope for picks. It was actually working a little against FSU in the first half, but Jimbo made the changes that JJ did not. Problem is you need ball control, grind out the clock run offense to go with it. We have never had that so no signs of ever having it. Al is trying to change our DNA. He has failed and will continue to fail. It would be easier for him to merely change his mind but I fear pride has made him stupid -- it usually does that.

Not sure which games you watched, but both those lines got pressure on the QB. Vinnie was having to make quick decisions and failed. Winston was holding onto the ball to long and in the 2nd half cut the time in half before the pressure got there. Those two D's are nothing like we run here. They actually forced the O's hand to do something. WE sit back and let the O do what they want without making any change or God forbid dictate what they will do.

They mostly rushed 3 and dropped 8. The pressure came from coverage and Vinny's not so great touch on short passes-- my favorite Cane ever but not good on those less than 10 yards type. We were running all over PSU but kept going for the pass -- our nature. Al is not Johnny Majors nor Joe Pa and his rapist, so his version is much less effective and completely useless against sound coaching that is prepared for it and makes adjustments.

Other than Denzel who is a mid round pick not one core rotation player on our front 7 will even be drafted.

Chick will be drafted.

No guarantee there and if so in the 6-7 round range.

What's one good thing he does?

he is too slow to rush the passer, not strong enough to set the edge against the run.

Chik was told he received a 4th-5th round grade if he went in the draft this year.

fanbase quit too...

3 inept coaching staffs and 10+ years of mediocrity will do that.

oh, and we have evidence that Al and D'onof can put together a solid defense.. which buys them time/credibility.

Golden's total defense rankings as a DC/HC:

UVA
2001: 93
2002: 100
2003: 67
2004: 18
2005: 60

Temple
2006: 117
2007: 44
2008: 81
2009: 32
2010: 16

Miami
2011: 45
2012: 116
2013: 90

- 13 seasons, his average defensive ranking is 68th.
- He's fielded a top 30 defense just twice in 13 seasons
- 6 times he's had a defense ranked 80th or worse

In an attempt to be fair, in the three years before he was hired at UM, his defenses at Temple went from 81 to 32 to 16. At Temple.
