2024 Aydin Breland 4* DT from Mater Dei

Yes. But depending on the portal is a tricky slope for numerous reasons. #1 the potential effects it could have on kids already in the room. #2 there is no gaurentee someone with success elsewhere would transition well towards here. They might not get a waiver. They want gaurentees we shouldn't be willing to give in the form of playing time. All kinds of potential hiccups when you bring in a one or two year fix.
Relying on the portal is such a huge risk. It surprises me that so many people look at it like a shopping list. There's no guarantee that good players at positions of need will even be available. Its more like one of those black friday deals people are standing in line for. There's only so many good players and everyone wants them. And once they're gone, that's it.

It needs to be viewed as a last resort or at best a safety net. You don't ever want to have your back against the wall when using the portal. That's how you end up overpaying and making promises you don't want to make.

It looks that way to us, but its more calculated than you'd think. USC knew for months that Jordan Addison was coming to play for them. They just couldn't announce it. There's plenty of schools working back channels behind the scenes. The best case scenario is to have a strong recruiting class and a strong portal class.

Such an intriguing dynamic shift for the "bags" argument. I remember not so long ago we had people on here arguing we had kids who wanted to come here and only took the bag to go to UGA, Bama or elsewhere. Which I guess could be true. Kid really does like Miami but then a bag school kicks it a nickel on top of being good and that would be enough to sway them. But now with bags out in the open its wild to see kids leaving substantial amounts of cash on the table to go to a traditional bag school for far less. I am sure the overall floor of bags has risen but prob not as much for schools already shelling out mcdonalds bags of cash

It was true back in the 2000s. It stopped being true after that, since we stopped winning. Does anyone remember AOL? Yahoo? Hotmail? Facebook? No, because they aren't delivering for new consumers. Just like Miami hasn't provided any real value outside of some 30 for 30s for recruits since Coker was made HC.

But the embers thank god still glow. And Mario is stoking that fire up hot right now. Close this season strong, find a new starting NFL-level QB, and land a Top 10 HS class + Portal class, and we'll be at bonfire level headed into 2025. Then we can stop paying the "suck tax".

Probably a bad idea to make assumptions about what @Brooklyndee and @SCarolina Ibis think. That said, I agree that the portal is a massive advantage when used properly. It's just rarely a precision instrument like the example you gave. That's really hard to replicate by targeting a specific person/people to fill a specific position. Much easier and higher confidence to use the portal to grab the best available across all positions provided it won't disrupt existing team chemistry.

400k in Miami IN COLLEGE is not ******* middle class, idk wtf you're talking bout lol.
Either way you're living like a king, so why the **** would you want to do that in Oklahoma.
Some kids want to play in a packed stadium every week, on-campus stadium and live the college life associated with that. Not everyone wants to live in SFLA. I've lived in FL and OKC, and while I prefer FL, I get why kids want to play in Norman.

Sustaining a competitive program solely through the portal is virtually impossible.

400k I’m Miami is middle class
Same thing with all the major cities
400k in norman ok, might make u 1%
in Miami 400k can’t flex without the guy next to me flexing harder
College pssy is More abundant and I am absolute baller king

Just ask bama. Not to mention even with those good players you don't have any REAL way to know how their skillset will transition into this team until it's actually there.

$400k a year is a large income anywhere on earth. I am blown away at the insane levels of ignorance on this board sometimes. Unreal.
Pretty sure the median HOUSEHOLD income in our country is like $75k… so one person making $400k is almost 6X more than the household income…middle class. We are an unserious people lol

You're correct.

I would bet my entire life savings that less than 1% of this board makes more than $400K per year, as an individual. And there's not a chance in **** I'd lose that bet.

find a new starting NFL-level QB,

A lot of 2024 draft projects have at least 6 QBs ahead of TVD. And even if TVD has an outstanding year, I don't think he's going to pass up Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, or Quinn Ewers unless they suffer catastrophic injuries. This is an insanely deep QB class. IMO TVD would make millions (if not tens of millions) more if he comes back for another year and leads UM to a playoff berth as I think that would push him into the top 10 or better. Preseason buzz next season would be that UM has one of the QBs in the country, rather than this year's preseason question of "will we see the TVD of 2021 or will he suck again"?

Not only that, but the example he gave he's not correct about. Usc certainly expected Addison for months. However during that same time frame he stayed in regular contact with us as well. If we would've gave him the offer he wanted he would've came to us just as quickly. But we weren't on him as hard because we had that same contact with zay flowers who changed his mind about the portal at the last possible second. Overall the point he made about moves in the shadows is obvious all across the board. It still doesn't change the warning that was pointed out.

I was saying this exact thing when people were screaming to just “overpay” for a DT this last offseason

Sometimes I wonder if people here interact with other humans in the real world or it’s just playing too many video games
