Are your doubts about James Coley over?

As more data rolls in, Coley looks to be legit.

My early concerns were lack of commitment to the running game and not utilizing the middle of the field.

Now that the blocking has improved, the run/pass balance is much better.

As for plays over the middle, we're seeing a bit more of it, but with Morris's inconsistency, I can understand keeping his reads easier.

Three of Morris's 4 INTs have come over the middle where he didn't properly judge a LB or Safety.

Better defenses are going to squeeze the stuff outside the hashes, so hopefully we'll see more improvement with intermediate routes over the middle.

I don't want morris throwing over the middle unless its 3rd and long and were losing

i love the offense.....those stacked recievers reminds what we used to do with dre, beard, sands, and jones in 01....we murdered folks with that...wondered why we went away from that for so long....i always loved that formation

No, I still have concerns about coach Coley. Im not sure I'll have enough evidence to know much about him until the FSU game. We've played some extremely weak defenses and one dominant one. Tough to judge IMO.

I will say that my core concerns about coach Coley have been satisfied. Im confident that he understands the core of being an OC. (can game plan, implement and execute his plan, etc...) Is he a high level play caller and game manager? Again, I think we'll know after FSU.

The bad pass by Morris was going to Herb but turned into an INT.
Today was his best called game yet. Another poster mentioned balance. It was beautifully balanced. Going forward we can do without the little jet sweep shovel pass thing... but that is nitpicking. Off topic, but did Herb get as much as a target today?

Love how he keeps it simple. He has no problem running the ball 8 times in a row if it's working.
Yesterday was a great called game.

Only thing really missing is the RB screen to Duke against good speed rushing ends. Hopefully we're waiting for VT & FSU to utilize the screens.

Why are you so "concerned?" Having doubts is one thing but you seem to be really "concerned"

The offense improves weekly. Yesterday was the best the offense has looked in 2 years. Love driving down the field and keeping our defense on the sideline. I agree with franchise, I think coley is an upgrade over fisch so far. I agree with SFBayCane that the FSU game is going to be a good test. Can't wait

One thing I noticed is how soft teams are playing coverage against us. They always have at least one safety very deep and sometimes 2.

Terrified of WR's making big plays and especially Dorsett running behind them.

Big part of how easily we are ripping off 15 yard carries lately but can never quite break any 70 yard Duke runs.

Regardless the offense is very much a pick your poison type deal right now which is great!

If there is an area of concern you have touched on it with regards to loose zone coverage and zone coverage in general the offense has faced to date. Coach Coley has certainly shown route combinations that can exploit zone coverage. Player execution has steadily improved in this area too.

Looking back at the gator game Miami smoked their secondary by hitting Dorsett deep on a post route for a TD. That TD came against zone coverage. Although I might be wrong here but I think the gator D played mostly man coverage from that point forward. As a result the passing game struggled. Of course the Miami passing game won't face secondary personnel the caliber of u.*** with the exception of vTech and perhaps f.st. Thus, the Miami passing game will need to prove it can efficiently execute against press, tight man coverage if we are to obtain the goal of reaching the acccg and a possible mncg.

He called a good game.

Only nit picks i have .......is....

I dont like the zone to the short side of the field...i realize its kind of a throw away play and could break with Duke's vision..but typically throughout the year we have gain from 3 yds to -3 yards on that play. I do realize its a setup play for the play action zone passing game but still...i hated it last yr when fisch ran it to death also.

Also their also another running play that needs to be scrapped ALL TOGETHER...this play the whole season has done nothing for us..a play where were puling the backside guard..and is sort of a trap play...well that play has been getting BLOWN up all year...i mean Easley will go first rd just off of his film alone blowing up that play....and in this gt game, it cost us two holding penalties as the center will have a tough *** block to the dt going up field and kind of has no choice but to hold..they got Mcdermott twice i think. They held EASLEY every single time we ran the play against uf in my opinion...fundamentally tht play is a cluster****.

In short yardage id like to see him use Mo Hagens more...even if its to the point of lining him up in single back...Mo gets it done imo

I'm in agreement w/r/t pulling the backside guard on the zone stretch, particularly in short yardage situations. With the size of our offensive linemen we should just line up, fire off the ball and maul folks in goal line and short yardage situations.

He's calmed my nerves, definitely. I was concerned with the lack of his track record. He does not have much experience calling plays for big time D1A. At FSU, he wasn't a primary signal caller (Jimbo, I'm sure, had a much bigger influence in the gameplan) and FSU's offense was a mess.

great play calling so far.

where is Lucane? he had some doubts about coley and would like to know his opinion on what he has seen so far.

ubi est lucane?

GT's D was ranked in the top 10-15 before our game, FWIW. Granted, they hadn't played a decent offense till ours, but they held Duke to ~250 yds, UNC to 320, and VT to 275.

Because I havent seen him do what I want to see yet. ie: show me he can scheme and generate points against a good defense. We did nothing against uf. The rest have been cupcakes. UNC is 1-4 and Wake is not going to be able to matchup with our athletes. @ FSU will tell us a lot about coach Coley's abilities.

So far, so good tho.

Agreed. Although I am satisfied with our performance so far, I keep going back to the Florida game where we couldn't get a first down for a long time. Last year, we looked great on O against weak Defenses but looked bad against top ones (KSU, ND, UNC,FSU). Is this déjà vu? We shall see November 2nd.

lol oh ok

You forgot the part when James Coley called the plays that ended up being 2 1st quarter passing Touch Downs against Florida. I'd say that was "generating points against a good defense."

Didnt forget it, we didn't really move the ball well against uf. We scored 21 points against uf. A long bomb on the opening drive and a TD generated by the defense (taking possession on the uf 7 yard line). In between were a boatload of 3 & outs. Again, uf's D is super-elite (or was when we played them w/Easley), Im comfortable not evaluating coach Coley on that game, but I need to see more info against another top shelf D. FSU and prolly Va Tech will be good benchmark games.

I agree that FSU & VT will be good benchmark games to evaluate Coley further. However, in regards to Florida, didn't Al mention something to the effect that because our D was playing good, we played ball control on O? This may explain why we didn't take too many chances with our playcalling in the 2nd half.
