All in on Mateer (Boomed and Sooned)

My law partner is from Oklahoma, went to OU and is a lifelong OU fan. I won't get this exactly right, but OU has some kind of NIL payment range by position. The idea is all the players know it going in, they know the range of their payments, and the goal is to keep team unity, thinking that it prevents jealousy and other issues because certain players don't get paid way more than others. I don't know if it works and I don't know if it's actually in place, but that's what he says. In my mind, if that's true, OU isn't going to offer Mateer $1.9 million for 1 year (isn't that what Cam got?) because it totally violates that structure. We'll see.
... I mean if it was by position, I'd think it very easily could go up to and above $2M. I mean what would be the point of making a positional spending cap if you aren't going to actually do it correctly? QBs in NFL once they get paid (so the top ones), get up to or above 20% of the FULL Cap in the NFL. If you have a $20M yearly NIL Budget, that's $4M/yr on the QB position. Now obviously you shouldn't only compare to QBs after they get the record setting contracts... but still we're talking easily $2M for a good Starting QB here if a program was doing it that way.

I’m extremely bias and willing to admit it in this case. I think he’s gonna ball out. Hope it doesn’t happen on us.
He had like the best big time throw rate this season. And was pretty good at not turning it over too much.

Dude was there for all of one season.
Exactly just one year. The offensive Coordinator Ben Arbuckle is 29 and was at UW for two years and Western Kentucky before that. He took over after Eric Morris left.

Eric Morris is the one who recruited Mateer to WSU then left to go to North Texas as head coach in 2023. Coaching QB Chandler Morris this year who has passed for 3774 yards.

Morris was the head coach at Incarnate Word with Cam Ward and then took Cam to WSU with him when he took the OC job for a year. He coached Cam for three years.

Morris was the offensive talent behind the two QBs. He played WR at TT under Mike Leech and then coached under Leech at WSU. He then went to TT as co OC WR coach under Kliff Kingsbury then took over as OC the next year having the number two offense in the country with Patrick Mahomes playing his sophomore year.

Maybe we need to go after Morris for co-OC.. pay him whatever it takes..

It’s not a bad idea given that another year of having the top offense would lead to Dawson getting a big time HC job somewhere paying him a fat salary. Morris would step right in. Fire Dennis Smith and make Morris the co-OC and ST coach.

It’s gonna be a long game next year. The lagway you seen isn’t who we’re gonna play next year. I can promise that. He’s the #goods
Im interested to see if Napier can develop him to the next level. He hasn’t proven he can do that to any QB at UF yet. Mertz got worse than he was at Wisconsin. And Anthony Richardson basically said that UF didnt develop him for ****. So Napier has no track record. Will be interesting to follow.

Yeah no wonder they suck.
So they didn’t give David Stone a blank check and gave him just as much as the other DL? I don’t believe that one bit. Lol. If it’s true then Stone really did just want to go back home.

Like one poster said..why would Mateer follow the same guys who couldn’t develop him into a Day 1 pick up until this point? What’s going to change at OU? And if he was going to OU, why not opt out the bowl game..and just commit and help them recruit WRs in the portal? Just doesn’t add up. But we will see soon.

Yeah I’m with you I’ll just say he didn’t do anything to change my mind. I’ve never called him some otherworldly talent. **** honestly this might be the first time I have ever commented about him.

But it’s like this board gets way in their feelings when his name comes up. I get it he’s a Gator and people are rooting for him to fail. On the flip side Emory beats Clemson with abysmal pass numbers and you got people ready to hand him the keys

I’d push all “debates” about him personally until after next season. I certainly won’t die on a hill defending a Gator but I had hoped we could make a run at him in high school for a reason
You can only be a Miami fan if you don't say anything positive about other players and coaches.

I mean…..they developed him into the hottest name in the portal (in the event he enters) after his first year as starter. Why is this his first year as starter….because he was sitting behind Cam.

I can see why SD would love this kid. Can obviously use his legs but also makes off script throws, has a strong arm to make some of the throws that Cam made this season, and doesn’t seem to be a 1 read type of QB. Looked like he can go through progressions from that clip.

Let’s not get too carried away..he’s the hottest name in the portal because the QB portal class is trash. When Mendoza is commanding 1M you know teams are desperate. Mateer is **** good but he wouldn’t have been in the top 3 QB transfers last year. This is a pathetically weak year. Jackson Arnold and miller Moss both got benched because of how bad they are and they are “hot” names in the portal.

That said, if they were such great developers, he should be headed to the NFL. This is a weak QB class after Cam and Shadeur. Just saying. And is that Cams former OC too? Genuinely asking..

Take away his 3 TDs against their FCS opponent and dude had 8/7 TDs/Ints. Actually if you look at it on pure stats CJ Bailey out performed him big time. Lagway might get there at some point but he isn’t a Trevor Lawrence type 5*
Also, and I can’t stress this enough, he is not being coached by Lincoln Riley or any other offensive savant that has successfully developed talent in the past. He is being coached by BILLY NAPIER!!!

Venables won't make it through the end of the year if they don't get Mateer, and instead get some trash heap portal QB. Oh boy that's not a kind schedule. Couldn't happen to a more deserving prick.
It takes more than just a QB. I don't think they have the supporting cast to make an impact. If Mateer really is interested in showcasing his skills for a higher draft grade, Oklahoma is not the best choice.
