This wasn’t an undefeated team

Hardest part for me to accept is this is a supremely good offense and can carry you to a title with a decent d that gets timely stops. The coach3s are happy to say we’re not there yet than actually fix the issues and go all in. Next years schedule is a gauntlet and we won’t have Cam. We have to be all in on this year. The fans can’t want it more than the dudes paid a lot inside that building.
- “It is what it is” <shrugs shoulders>
Lance Guidry, November 3ish, 2024

When it ends in a win it’s heisman like. If it’s a loss it’s selfish. Got it.
Good. Because that's exactly how voters look at it. He lost it on a game ending fumble, in which he tried to do too much yet again. If it had worked then yeah, they praise it, but today it didn't. He's probably out.

The team's record is more accurate than it was yesterday. I wish we got away with it, but we didn't this time. You only have so many comebacks. My knee-jerk thoughts:

- The defense is the story for me. We gave up 271 yards rushing to a team with no QB and no RB. We lost time of possession 35 minutes to 25 minutes. We gave up 9 of 14 third downs. On a critical 3rd and 18, we couldn't win up front and left someone running wide open. It was a bad day.

Here's the frustrating part: we had more cards to play than the opponent on defense, and we still lost. That's not just a talent issue. I thought the defense would start creeping towards average over the last four games, but we're going in the opposite direction.

- My biggest disappointment is the defensive end position. Before the season, we all knew our secondary would be a weakness. The hope was we'd kill just enough drives with our pass rush. That hasn't panned out consistently. Zero sacks today. Pass rush opportunities were limited, but part of the reason is that the edges were so soft that Georgia Tech controlled down and distance. We just don't perform like a team with two NFL DEs.

- Cam Ward is still the best player in the country. No serious person would compare him to Dillon Gabriel. But he was off today. Missed throws early and struggled with his pocket presence. He had checkdowns available for chunk plays that he consistently turned down. He's the least of my worries, but it wasn't his best day.

- The only bright light was OJ Frederique. That's what a playoff-caliber defensive back looks like. We don't have enough of them.

- If I could bring a recent player back, it might be Jaquan Johnson. We lack a tone-setter in the back seven. The guys that know how to play aren't twitchy, and the guys that are twitchy are either injured or green. Teams are going to continue to challenge our perimeter tackling, and I don't know if we have an answer.

- I didn't mind the decisions to go for it on fourth down. That's who we've been all year. The playcalls and execution are fair to question, but I like trusting the guys who got us here.

- Elijah Arroyo is a high-round NFL pick. Difference-making speed at his size.

- We didn't have a terrible day with penalties (3-35) but it could have been more if a couple targeting calls and a facemask went the other way. This has been a problem all year.

- It's a shame that Popo Aguirre got injured, because he was playing really good football in a LB group that is taking steps backwards. Teams are continuing to take advantage of Kiko Mauigoa in space.

- I'd like to see the All-22 to see how much separation our receivers were getting. We will continue to get challenged by teams with athletic corners.

- I hate that we have to worry about other ACC teams losing. We've been here before and it always ends poorly. But we are in a strong position compared to the past. Most tiebreaker scenarios favor us.

This team needs to get value out of the bye week and handle its business. The goal remains an ACC Championship. I'm less optimistic on the defense than ever, but the offense will give us a chance. Go Canes.

We have a OC and a DC that are both terrible. Bottom line. Mario is also a horrible game day coach. We will NEVER be back with this coaching staff unless we gave the 01 Canes talent. .

There is no way I'm reading every thread, but what are the ACCG scenarios? If we win out, do we need help?

We WERE an undefeated team and should have stayed that way given the schedule. This was not the opponent to lose to. I could understand not being able to win a shootout with a Louisville or Syracuse because the D couldnt get a stop. But this vaunted offense could not score more than 23 against one of the worst pass Ds in the country. Dukes D was 10x better but UM carved them up. You know why? Because players didn’t want to lose that game and executed. Ward was slicing up perfect coverage. This game they approached with the same energy as if playing a FCS team.

Ultimately though Ward had to be better.

Did anyone watch the World Series? Aaron Judge played at a MVP level all regular season. In the World Series, he was terrible. Lots of problems on that Yankees roster but Judge is the one people blame most because the team needed him to play like he did in the regular season and he didn’t. Wont find many Yankees fans that will defend him and say “he’s the best hitter we have had in decades, he is allowed to have a bad series.” UM needed Ward to be sharp today to stay undefeated. He didn’t even need to play like a MVP, just pick up a few yards with his legs to keep the chains moving, and hit his checkdowns. Unfortunately he didn’t show up today. Gunslinger or not, everything depends on him and he didn’t deliver. I was disappointed with the teams energy. It seems like they would rather have been sleeping in than up playing a noon game in Georgia.

Tell us something that isn't obvious. Outside of the UF and FSU games, this is a .500 ACC team. The fact tat we won close games could have easily been losses with Miami sitting at 4-4 in ACC play. That's exactly how they have played.

It's easy to see that without Cam Ward, this team is mediocre. The ENTIRE defense is a disappointment, with the defensive line being the biggest disappointment of them all. A DL thst was supposed to be top 10, gives up nearly 300 yards of rushing and can't get a QB sack to save its life.

Guidry continues to play LBs that can't physically make the plays against the opponents personnel. Pruitt and Washington are better options as they can play side to side and cover in space. At minimum, they should be playing on passing downs.

Guidry said GT would run on the edges and yet his DEs were in looping twists multiple times getting gashed for big plays. Bain and Baron don't have the speed to contain the edge from the inside out, yet that's exactly how the played. Neither held the edge. Quite frankly, Baron has been a liability for the better part of the last 4 games. Booker would have been the better choice. He has the speed to stop the outside runs and can get to thr QB.

My expectations have fallen. I don't know I'd this team could best SMU. Right now I'd say NO. SMU is a better coached team. They don't have the penalties and breakdowns on defense that Maiami has. Their offense is just as capable of putting up points as Miami.

Our offensive line was so disappointing today. Can someone address this? We overrate players every year. This year the DL OL is the culprit. We knew our secondary sucked. Maybe same with linebacker
Offensive line was probably the best unit. Most of the sacks Ward had the ball too long.

We've been favored in every game.. By double digits in most of them.

We should be undefeated. If we lost a game it should have been a game like @LOU or @UF... Not @GT against this one dimensional team who can't even throw the ball unless it's 3rd and long.

This was a bad loss and there's no rationalizing it now by looking back and saying things like "you all would have taken 9-1 at the beginning of the season" or "we were never supposed to be undefeated anyways".

Point is we WERE undefeated and were favored to win by 10+ today as well.

We underperformed..coaches AND players.
You ain't lying Yoyo!! Well said, we where outcoached, outplayed and outperformed by the inferior team. Every coach and player needs to stare at the mirror and figure out what part of their game, performance they need to adjust in order to finish this season strong. Because by the way we're playing/performing is looking like another long offseason of "WHAT IF'S".:diaf-u:

Yea I would feel differently if we were playing UF's schedule or something but being in death struggles with all these mid *** teams yet again is disappointing,

Defense is what it is at this point, if teams can limit our offense as well tho? Thats a recipe for disaster

looks like UVA just made it easier for us. Canes have to win out. UVA is going to beat Pitt to give them 2 losses.

We lose 1 game and people crying like ******* lol we were 7-5 last year people! Jesus. We knew playing the way we have that we would lose some. It was on the defense and the offense this year. But defense forced a punt and we thought we could let Cam take us to a W. Didn’t turn out that way, stop playing games and be a dominant team.
It’s not it being one loss . It’s how the loss looked. We were gashed for close to three bills by a team with a qb with no arms and couldn’t throw . They played with two arms tied behind their back yet we couldn’t stop them while allowing them to paper cut us to death possessing the ball. In basketball terms this offense was “ self guarded “. At least FSU had a qb with two functioning arms when we played. On top of that you knew what the play was by who the qb was lol.

I guess we shouldn’t be upset and accept another loss to a double digit underdog , with less talent than us . Because good programs lose those type of games all the time.

GT and their staff made our staff look like chumps and our staff made themselves look worse crying about GT getting help from other Acc schools in pre game. This is just an atrocious look all the way around.

don’t forget to glaze these players more every spring and fall buddy. This program is a joke and always will be a joke. Number 4 team and can’t beat a 5-4 team and could barely beat Louisville cal Va tech.

Do you have any thoughts on why Cristobal teams consistently don’t look prepared? Is this fixable?

I get what you’re saying, but honestly, we got out-coached in this one. Georgia Tech slowed the pace, controlled the ball, and kept our offense off the field. We couldn’t force any quick 3-and-outs, so they just chewed up 3 to 5 minutes of clock every drive.

The best way to neutralize a high-powered offense is to keep them off the field and limit their chances. One of their drives was 10 minutes almost the whole quarter.

Yep, I’m not even mad about the loss itself, great teams drop a game now and then, and only a rare few make it through a season undefeated.

But this loss? It was just flat-out embarrassing. The reason I feel this way boils down to pride and ego. Losing a hard-fought battle is one thing, but getting disrespected and not even putting up a fight? That stings. That’s exactly what happened to us on Saturday.

Georgia Tech literally ran the ball right down our throats, play after play. They lined up, telegraphed exactly what they were going to do, and we still had no answer. Our defense got their pride taken from them, and it was like watching us just take it without a response.
