There are two separate points of evaluation in my head: the current team, and the '24 recruiting class. The current team has no excuse for going less than 8-4. DMoney mentioned the schedule being concerning...well it's a top 10 easiest schedule in the country. It has 1 game we're double-digit underdogs in, and that's a rivalry game against FSU. UNC is extremely beatable, and yet we talk about them as if they're some perennial 10-2 squad. We were dogsh!t last season and almost beat them. They lost their top two receiving options and a top 10 OC in college football. They replaced him with Chip Lindsey, and still have an atrocious defensive unit coached by a washed DC. NC State, while soundly coached, has a very medicore offensive personnel on paper. UVA, GT, BC should all be gimmes. Stay healthy and it would be extremely concerning not to win 8, 9 games.
A big part of the reason for optimism about the '23 season is....surprise surprise, the '23 class. And what's not to love about this? I don't want to go over every single recruit, but we signed 13 players in the top 204, and 16 in the top 450 and 21 in the Top 750. The only players we didn't sign in that Top 750 were Pulliam (760), Tinilau (project OL), and our punter. Most of them are already competing for spots in the two deep.
We've got what...single digits inside the top 450? You need to stack classes on top of one another in order to build a machine of a program. A two/three deep where the drop off isn't something insanely horrifying, sort of like this year for us. God forbid we lose Matt Lee, TVD, Damari Brown, Kam, etc....big drop off in talent. Bumps can come in rankings, sure. Kids can get better during their senior seasons. Maybe we're just well ahead of the curve, **** I hope so. I'm not actively rooting against anyone in the class. If they're Canes, I wholeheartedly support them.
But make NO MISTAKE, we desperately need better talent in this class. Less projects, more guys that will fight for the two-deep in '24. It's essential for the continued growth of this roster. Our "evals" were still pretty decently-rated recruits (Pulliam, Bobby, Horton, Johnson, etc). Our evals this year? Tape talks, offers talk, money talks...we're lacking in all three with some of these recruits.
