Why Waiting for Blue Chips is a Dangerous Game

Bold talk don't mean doodly squat. I don't care what anyone says, you **** yourself by going 5-7. If I'm an elite recruit, Mario and Miami would have to show me something.

July is a money month. It’s still June.

Also…Mario pulled Miami’s ***$ out of the fire when he got the job. Landed some decent blue chips in no time flat. If Mario feels under the gun he will land kids. I doubt the summer ends without us being in the top 15.
Good post.
Mario got here in December and somehow got us from #30+/- (or worse?) to #16 in a few weeks.

I get why some are in panic mode, but we’ve been told end of June, into July and August this thing will fire up.
Let’s see.

I trust Mario's ability to close & flip some big names still.

But it's interesting people's ability to convince themselves that "fill the class with the role players, then go big name hunting" is a thing.

That's not a thing. I can't think of any recruiters/recruiting classes that have operated that way. Maybe Bobby Bowden over 20 years ago.

Again, I believe in Mario - but it's really weird how this class is filling out and it's valid to have some concern.

What gets me is that the people who were suspicious of the Mario hire initially were immediately told that Mario is an elite recruiter and not to worry about his other deficiencies.

How does an elite recruiter have a class looking like ours, even despite the season last year? Or is he only elite when he is winning games? Which that would really mean he’s like the majority of college coaches and is not some savant at recruiting like many think. Like others said, that’s the approach we had with the other failed coaches yet now the expectations have shifted back to that with our elite recruiter.

One thing is certain, the propaganda machine of this university is top notch.

he pulled in the 7th ranked class after going 5-7. the only de-commit he had was Cormani and I don't really blame him or the staff for that.

i don't think you can base the status of this current class based on us going 5-7. we were **** last year and still pulled Samson and Bain. it's too early in the year for this.

It is June Francis.

Exactly

Let the tears flow now.

Could have 5 or 6 committed though? People are right to be nervous.

If UM recruiting makes you nervous, you need to reevaluate.

I might get nervous over something that may have a real impact on my life, but people forget this is a hobby time activity. If it elicits negative emotions, you need to take a step back.

I wouldn’t use nervous for me personally. Not after what I’ve seen done the last 18 months with a previously weaker and burnt out recruiting staff.

I would say I’m more eager to see what these next six weeks entail. Excited for sure, probably mixed with antsy.

By the way (since we don’t have a general recruiting thread), three of the aforementioned teams lurking in the recruiting rankings picked up nice commits yesterday - USC, A&M, and Clemson. The ball is beginning to roll slowly but surely - the first two teams have had b2b days with commits.

Mario has shown himself to be an upper-echelon recruiter throughout his coaching career. He's already shown it here, salvaging c/o 2022 upon arrival by snatching recruits like Citizen, Kelly, Moss, and Skinner, and by signing a top 7 class last year despite a very disappointing season on the field.

In any event, it's June, most of our top targets have not committed, and it is too early to say what this class will ultimately look like. Let's look at it again the weekend before games start and see where we stand.

I won't address the rest, except to say I'm not sure how you can be a fan of UM football while disliking the University of Miami. There is no UM football without UM. Remember that.

First, he had more decommits than just Cormani. He lost Lew (who could have potentially been our backup C and maybe an answer there next year) to Alabama and Rashada (to lies from FU and bad decisions). Could have used all 3 players (though I question Rashada's decision making now and wonder if he'll wash).

As for the 5-7, yes, Mario maintained a top 7 class despite his record. And, yes, he inherited a team/roster with lots of problems/holes. But, he has some responsibility for that record. He brought in the coaches that didn't get along. He brought in the guy to run an abyssmal and bro-style offense. So please forgive me if I roll my eyes every time someone tries to use Mario's 5-7 record as an excuse for this year's recruiting woes. He made that bed.

So there's a lot of room between these quoted positions. But, ultimately, we are still in wait-and-see mode for another month or so while the summer commitments play out. The class needs help and is currently made up of 3* guys (2-4 will get bumped) and some developmental evaluations, but most of our targets remain uncommitted. We are also trending for some blue-chip guys preparing to commit. And a legitimately improved season (8 wins should be doable with the roster/coaching changes) may also help snag a handful of key recruits near the close.

There is some cause for concern, but still much time avert disaster. There is reason for optimism, but much work to be done.

Tf are you talking about lmao I didn't make 5-7 as an excuse. I literally said "i don't think you can base the status of this current class based on us going 5-7." Meaning that us going 5-7 isn't why the current class overall is lackluster.

Lost Antoine Jackson too to the undefeated poon. Reid mikeska I count as being pushed out.

If that's what you meant, I misunderstood you. I think if you go back and read your sentence again, you may see it's a bit unclear. I might have written, "I don't think you can attribute the current statutus of this class on us going 5-7."

yeah i wasn't using it as an excuse. i got you

First off, OP great post. You're consistently one of the better posters here and I respect your opinion.

The situation, like recruiting in general is fluid. It's not a "we gettin' errbody!" or "we gettin nobody!" type of situation. I definitely believe that we will get a decent group of summer commits, including some big fish but if we're going for another top 10 (or better) class it's going to take some real work on the actual field. The idea that we're signing top 5 classes yearly simply "because Mario" is and always has been ridiculous. Players are going to be hesitant. Last year set us back more than a lot of people want to believe. We have players literally telling the media, "i want to see what they look like on the field". I think with some legit on field improvement we can not only close on a couple of those "on the fence" types but we might flip a couple also.
