Welcome to the Canes, Derrick Smith

I like him as a prospect. The only issue is he seems to be another box safety. We need a ballhawk in this class.

Canes are shook because of Jamal Carter and because Smith's a three star. I thought the same thing initially so I re-watch the highlights. He wraps up in many of the hits in those highlights and as lucinao.8 stated coaching can improve tackling. I'd say our team improved considerably in that department over the previous season.

Biggest pro= ball skills
Biggest con= not a sure tackler

Bad reads or not finishing the tackle when he gets to the right spot?

From the little that I've seen he seems to go for the big hit and not wrap up.

Coaching can change that

Not sure what makes you say this. This kid is SO underrated. If he didn't play in a secondary with two #1 overall corners he would get so much more attention. When we played them earlier this year he's by far the person who impressed me the most. Corners kept getting saved by monds bad throws but this kid always was on point & isn't scared of nothing. Love getting this kid.

Amari Carter looks like a pretty complete safety prospect to me. Dude is a **** good receiver on the high school level. Safeties who play WR in high school usually have good ball skills in college.

Watch that ^^^^ highlight and then tell me if this kid is still a JAG.

Some of you don't know ****

i guess Gibson & Carter are "JAGS" ALSO....

Smith has better ball skills then both and hits just as hard if not harder then both....

so i guess we have 3 "JAGS" at safety u CLOWN !
Don't know why he is a clown? I being hopeful here but outside of Amari who isn't that rangy, I dont see much in these guys. Think amari could be a stud though. Bottom line is that we need to do better in terms of talent, plain and simple. Hope Im wrong but Ive seen this movie over and over again the last decade or so. Posters hype players just because they committed to Miami not because there is that much reason to hype them.

NOT AT ALL. I know it's just an opinion but this kid is the definition of a ballhawk back there. I think far as film goes it's important to remember the other dbs trinity had on the field & use a Lil context. When they played us & most of the tape we saw on them they played man cause the CB's are both monsters & their run d is a Lil average. Safeties collapsed because that's where they were needed. He fills a very big need

you want a rangy ball hawk in the back end..

That's what UM has been missing and needs

Hopefully Jeff james is the answer. He looked like a TRUE ball hawk in his SR film

I don't know now if anyone else thought this when they saw his hit from the state championship game on Ali from Chaminade, but I would be damned if I said it didn't remind me of a hit that ST26 would of made.

I like his future, but only time will tell
