Welcome to the Canes, Derrick Smith

For me, FS is a spot that more and more is needing speed. More speed than all corner spots outside of field CB. Boundary corner needs length and size but generally has help over the top. Nickel corner relies on quickness and tackling ability. Generally they only carry the seam to a certain depth until the S comes into play.

FS needs huge speed to play cover-3, cover-2, cover-1 in today's game of spread offenses.

We have recruited a bunch of box S types who are all hitters. It's ok to be a bit slower at the LOS, but in a cover-2 or cover-4 defense both S's need speed to play the run. At S, your speed is huge when playing the run because it's about angles, getting to the RB before he's through the hole, rather than at the hole. At the hole it's a 3-yard gain. Through the hole you're forced to make a tackle in open space. Those are the ones that have potential for big runs.

The tea leaves were there when Richt and Diaz talked about tackling being the most important thing at S, and how when you look around the country at all the big plays you see, it's usually because a S missed a tackle.

Diaz and Richt value tackling above all else at the S position, so in that respect this player fits the bill.

Hope it works out.

Great Post ...I dont mind having a player like him if we have speed everywhere els,, if hes playing the other safety better be a 4.5 guy

Derrick Smith is a stud with verifiable track speed from a perennial powerhouse school in Jacksonville that just won a state title.

The recruiting newbies need to shut the f**k up and listen.

What is this verifiable track speed?

Dude looks slow as molasses.

i guess we should just go to track teams and recruit guys , since speed is the end all lol.

Ed Reed is the greatest safety ever and he didn't have really good speed. He was fast enough ( football fast) but had great instincts.

Give me instincts and range on a safety. Seeing a play develop faster than everyone is a huge advantage.

Smith is far from slow, and looks to have good instincts , range and attacks the ball like a wr.

If you haven't watched his highlights, I highly recommend it. I agree with the sentiment that he's a step slower than what you'd like to see, but his anticipation, instinct, tackling, and ball skills are all very good. At the very least, he will be an excellent special teams player and quality depth. He may not have NFL speed, but he certainly has the chance to develop into a very good supporting player for a defense that has other playmakers.

I don't think he is any slower than a guy like Jamal carter or rayshawn Jenkins, or even Jaquan.

I don't get the slow talk , he moves well for that size . His range and instincts look really good and he's also physical as ****.

Exactly people just talking out there A55 or just watching a play or 2. Derrick smith is a big safety than can move, hit and adds playmaking ability

First of all. LMAO. At using a rare creature like Ed Reed as an example.

Also don't minimize Reed's athleticism. His straightline speed was slow but he has as much quickness and acceleration as anyone. He had great burst in jumping passes. Don't forget he played RB as well as DB in high school.

LMAO if you see that type of explosiveness in his film. He looks to me to be at best a Rayshawn Jenkins type Safety.

We need more range and explosiveness out of the safety position.

For me, there's a difference between being fast, and being fast for your size.

That said, I never called the dude slow, I just called him an in-the-box S who doesn't fit the FS spot in my view. My problem isn't with the player, it's in the lack of diversity of skill sets. I haven't done much in the way of film study for the past two months because my son is still in the hospital since birth (writing from his hospital room), but if we mirror our S positions, it makes a lot of sense to have similar skill sets back there.

If I were doing the recruiting, I'd have more speed so that we can play more cover-1, but that's also not really this defense's philosophy. I love cover-1 on 1st down and then a shell cover-2 on 3rd and long. Play whatever defense suits the situation on 2nd down.

Alabama loads up to stop you on early downs and then plays shell coverage on 3rd down and rallies to make the tackle. It's why they generally aren't elite at sacking the QB, but are elite on success ratio, percentage of drives scoring, percentage of drives 3 and out etc.

Good stuff, but Alabaga beat the **** out of QBs this year with Pruitt there. That dude might be the best DC in college ball.

There's been plenty of great players that lacked really good speed , not just reed. I just used him as an example because he's a Miami guy. Speed matters to a degree but you people that obsess over it would miss out on a ton of great " football players". Instincts , tackling well and range are way more important than " top speed".

this is a great pick up imo. Plus size..solid speed. I think Jeff James, Knowles will be the fs down the road. These safeties dont need much physical development

Gibson, and Smith will be the in the box guys. Carter i think can play the FS role to.

We shirt one of those guys next year..and let the other 2 play specials similar to how Romeo Finley did this year. With a chance to break the rotation. I honestly think we downplay Knowles because of the poor times when he first came in..but he seemed to be progressing from the spring to summer time..then logged minutes back there as a back up

Knowles is one of Diaz favorites because he's such a hard worker. I don't know if he's athletic enough to be the man at FS.

Quick blurb from Fishbein's state championship writeup. I take it he meant on instead of by.

DB-Tyreke Johnson-(Trinity Christian) / Derrick Smith (Trinity Christian) - Johnson is part of four straight title wins. He will get his chance at five straight in 2017. He is one of the best defensive backs in the nation. Not to be outdone was Derrick Smith who had 6 tackles and an interception. Smith is overshadowed by what may be the number 1 secondary in the nation.

his video is better than romeo finley and everybody loved that guy

Because he had an extr star by his name, most of these guys justify a recruit by stars . Not film.

If he's a four star he automatically looks bigger, faster and stronger.

To Miami message boarders, Vaughn Teleweak was fast and Clinton Portis and Frank Gore were "shifty" but slow coming out of high school. Don't know how fast this guy is, but lulz at claiming he's AJ Highsmith based on a few clips.

Retarded post.

Gore and Portis were housing runs on all their clips. Gore was Dade's ALL TIME leading rusher.

You can tell players who are explosive fast on tape. They eat angles. They close on the football with velocity and violence. They turn many pics into Tds.

Telemaque did none of that. This dude's tape is not special. Period. Especially considering that his teammates in the secondary are all top D1 prospects so people are actually throwing away from them.

Portis always had good speed and I don't recall Telemaque ever having it.

Portis was clearly part of the "Miami speed" during the Butch years. The other great Miami teams earlier also had plenty of legitimate speed guys.

We need much more speed on the team. Period.
