Welcome to the Canes, Derrick Smith

**** it, wasn't this the kid who wasn't supposed to get an offer? So does this mean Edwards ain't gonna come back into the fold?

Hoping that it's just an SEC coach doing SEC things. Get the kid in because we have the slots available and just process em if it don't work out.

Don't see how the two are related

Just rationalizing an uninspiring pickup. This kid was a topic of discussion months ago and it appeared he wasn't a take, so taking him now, strongly suggests we aren't where we want to be.

Or maybe staff was on the fence until he started knocking dudes out in state championship.

For me, FS is a spot that more and more is needing speed. More speed than all corner spots outside of field CB. Boundary corner needs length and size but generally has help over the top. Nickel corner relies on quickness and tackling ability. Generally they only carry the seam to a certain depth until the S comes into play.

FS needs huge speed to play cover-3, cover-2, cover-1 in today's game of spread offenses.

We have recruited a bunch of box S types who are all hitters. It's ok to be a bit slower at the LOS, but in a cover-2 or cover-4 defense both S's need speed to play the run. At S, your speed is huge when playing the run because it's about angles, getting to the RB before he's through the hole, rather than at the hole. At the hole it's a 3-yard gain. Through the hole you're forced to make a tackle in open space. Those are the ones that have potential for big runs.

The tea leaves were there when Richt and Diaz talked about tackling being the most important thing at S, and how when you look around the country at all the big plays you see, it's usually because a S missed a tackle.

Diaz and Richt value tackling above all else at the S position, so in that respect this player fits the bill.

Hope it works out.

I just hope when we play FSU, DJ Matthews gets laid the *** out. I'm sick of losing to that team and Brad needs to beat them at least once in his career.

If you haven't watched his highlights, I highly recommend it. I agree with the sentiment that he's a step slower than what you'd like to see, but his anticipation, instinct, tackling, and ball skills are all very good. At the very least, he will be an excellent special teams player and quality depth. He may not have NFL speed, but he certainly has the chance to develop into a very good supporting player for a defense that has other playmakers.

I don't think he is any slower than a guy like Jamal carter or rayshawn Jenkins, or even Jaquan.

I agree with you we need a speed injection into FS, i hope Dallas or Jeff James gets a look there. However with the aggressiveness of our defense qb's have a lot less time to look down the field so i can see why it's not necessarily a top priority. At least we now have makeup speed at corner with Malek and hopefully Dean.

Anyone who has been a UM fan for more than a year would probably agree with them.

I don't get the slow talk , he moves well for that size . His range and instincts look really good and he's also physical as ****.
