*Update Eddie Nunez Emerges as Strong Candidate for Miami AD Job

At this rate I bet Nunez hires Frank Martin to replace Larranaga as his first official move as AD.

OT- but has anyone seen Frank Martin lately? Unrecognizable to his former self. Got Covid twice (second time bad) and started losing all his hair so he shaved his head Mr. Clean bald. Seriously looks like a completely different dude.

He is close with Martin….

The role people are saying for Zo and this guy are completely different.

Somewhat. The Verge guy started off as a football administrator at LSU and then gradually worked into other areas (Basketball, etc.). I seriously doubt Alonzo is going to UM to be "just a football guy". His position in the pros was one level before GM. He can offer a ton of experience in other ways and shape this new role into something that the Ausberry guy has. Read the guy's bio - it says how his day to day has broadened with his experience. I can see that occurring with Alonzo.

Is Nunez such a bad choice? Igaf what school they're from if they're good at their job.

"In his first four years in the AD’s chair, Nuñez has presided over plenty of success stories, starting with a National Championship in Cross Country in 2017. Over his four years, UNM has totaled 25 NCAA Tournament appearances and 12 Mountain West titles. Among the 255 All-Conference performers have been 25 conference Athletes of the Year and nine conference Coach of the Year awards. Academically, UNM’s 847 Mountain West All-Academic selections and 569 Mountain West Scholar-Athletes are the highest total among all Mountain West schools over that time frame.

In 2020-21, despite the hardships associated with COVID-19, the Lobos led the Mountain West with six championships, winning in women’s basketball, women’s soccer, women’s cross country, women’s golf, men’s golf and men’s tennis. Those six championships tied for the most for any Group of 5 institution in 2020-21. Nuñez expertly led a department that had three major programs in football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball need to shift its base of operations out of state. Despite that, UNM once again had several program records for GPA, including the best two-year GPA in the history of UNM Athletics. Nuñez was also named to the LEAD1 Board of Directors."

+ The LSU experience

If not Jurich I'd rather a guy like Nunez instead of a Miami bro hire.

We will. Lots of stuff out there. Some with a hint of truth but most has been like throwing darts in the dark after spinning in a circle for 5 minutes.
I presume they are still trying to close leaks?

Still unsure on how scouting individual players qualifies you to oversee an entire college football progrum.

What's the point of "Zo"? If you hire an AD capable of actually doing his job and fulfilling all of his duties, there's no reason to have some other dude in charge of the football progrum.
He wasnt just a scout. At least from what I have heard.

At least he's been an AD before. What are Torretta's qualifications to run an athletic department. Freaking amateur hour.

This is not a big move. He has never won as an AD. Miami can’t pull a guy who has won? We are relegated to “maybe it would work with Zo.” That’s the big move. Maybe. Sucks for all of us.

Can't wait for the U to be top in the ACC women's cross country! /sarcasm

Anyone's resume can be spruced up to sound good. Same thing as cherry picking stats. The AD hire being him is....underwhelming. I'm not a #JurichOrBust person, but that is the type of hire they needed to make and they went with the "he's a miami guy" hire instead. (Still applies if it is indeed Toretta)

Anyone *****ing about the guy because of New Mexico football is an idiot

Saban could coach them and they still suck balls
Could you judge Al for Temple? Manny? Point is that there are ADs who have a track record and would come. We are speculating again way down the food chain.

What is your methodology for evaluating an AD candidate behind a computer?

You don't know anything. Neither do I. It's throwing darts. At least with a coach, we can watch the product. None of us have heard of any of these guys until this week. We aren't in the room and we aren't asking the questions.

As for the "Columbus Crew," the irony is that they are the guys doing everything that message board posters want. They pushed Jurich, they pushed to fire Blake and they are pushing to fire Manny. The three guys most responsible for the Manny hire (who is half-white, doesn't speak Spanish and went to Miami Country Day) were Blake James, David Epstein and Mark Richt.

It's a dumb angle.
Pretty simple. The guy has done absolutely nothing to improve the football program at UNM since he has been employed as AD there. In fact they have not had a season winning more than 3 games under his tenure. He is directly responsible for that. People will want to lean on LSU experience but in 2019 LSU replaced their AD and didn't even sniff him. They surely knew him better than anyone else. There is no way around the fact that on the surface hiring Nunez is unimpressive.
