*Update Eddie Nunez Emerges as Strong Candidate for Miami AD Job

You guys are weird. If at the end of the day, Mario Cristobal is the head coach of the football program, who cares about the AD? I mean seriously. Can anyone of you name another AD outside of like Gene Smith (OSU).
I also support hoops and baseball. Want to see all of our programs grow. Can’t say for certain if this guy can do it or not but anything is likely better than recent history because clearly BJ failed miserably.

Well Nunez at least has experience in turning around a football program. It's just not good experience...

The football program is what precipitated this search and is the most obvious problem, so let's find someone that's good at everything except football.
For what it’s worth, he inherited an HC that was extended right before he got hired. Was only able to get rid of him in 2019.

The contrast is key. He might be a good hire. Keyword: might...... We shouldn't be going on possibilities. This hire is too important. Get someone proven.
Bingo. This program doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt. So while it may be unfair to Nunez I don’t trust BOT to make the correct decisions. Id be happy to be proven wrong tho.

I have to presume that he pulled out because Miami wasnt willing to give him the full AD job.
Why not? That's stupid. Listen, the whole Zo thing was in place because we didn't trust Blake James to do the right thing, and he needed a check and balance. Now that Blake is gone, I'm fine cutting Zo out for a PROVEN athletic director. Why is this school making things so fuc*ing difficult? This ish isn't that hard...

It's far less important than people think in my opinion, but I'm fairly ignorant on the subject. I'd imagine that Saban built up Bama, not the AD. The AD is Saban's yes-man. Same at many other schools where the head coach is successful and trusted.

Still unsure on how scouting individual players qualifies you to oversee an entire college football progrum.

What's the point of "Zo"? If you hire an AD capable of actually doing his job and fulfilling all of his duties, there's no reason to have some other dude in charge of the football progrum.

read the LSU boards - they call eddie nunez "a basketball guy".

Cause too many cooks ruin the dish, thats why.

Not an insider .. BUT just read a comment by a guy who does have some BOT contact .. he believes that Nunez is the guy in some combination with Alonzo. Alonzo having primary responsibility for football operations and Nunez for the financials and all other sports. No idea of what "titles" would be handed out. AD to Nunez and Assistant AD to Alonzo? Realize it is NOT a new scenario .. but was just "reinforced" a few minutes ago. TIFWIW.

This would be the most Miami hires of all time.

If that was case why are people clamoring for Zo or Gino? UM ties with no AD experience
There are so many crazy and long threads going on at once that maybe I missed it where folks wanted Gino or Zo. I thought Zo was more of an advisory type role. And Gino was just a bad rumor.

Ill say this, Nunez might not be the home run hire...but I am not going to hold against him the football record of New Mexico. That football program is a wasteland. What coach in there right mind would ever take that job? Nunez was operating with one hand tied behind his back.

Our AD position is exactly similar to our HC position. We need a bonafide, experienced candidate with a proven track record that we can point to and explain why they're the best person to save this objectively terrible state both programs are in.

USC turned to a man with 20 years experience as AD at 4 different universities. Why should we expect anything less from ourselves?

First off, if you’ve sent me a direct message and I haven’t replied I apologize. It’s important to understand a few things regarding the situation we’re in. First and foremost is this is JF’s decision. I’m no fan of many members of the board of trustees and would love to blame them if this goes wrong. However, doing so would not be true to the situation especially since numerous influential members have made their support of him very clear. 90% of what has been put out so far is either short of information or completely incorrect. Barry J stating these guys, and oh by the way some other he just doesn’t conveniently name, shows the guesswork that’s at play. The names I’ve stated have been contacted and spoken to, period.

I’d love to say I know who the AD will be. I have a gut based on what I know but nothing more at this point. JF is playing this very close to the vest, in part because of the BJ situation being put out there a couple months ago. Right now I regret that decision a bit as I believe more valid and detailed information would be accessible at this point. I am willing to say the timeline looks like tomorrow/Thursday based on some schedule shuffling that’s been going on today which is out of the norm.

I can say there’s two competing thoughts at play here for those that count. The first is bringing in an alpha AD. The second, because this decision is largely but not exclusively football driven (contrary to the buffoons at the Herald), is to have someone who is willing to have pieces around him who have the clout to provide advice. Not sham made up positions advice but actual clout within the various entities in the department. I’d say we are 25% on the first and 75% on the second.

Regardless, I will reiterate that Manny is done just like I said a couple months back when the agreement with BJ for a mutual parting of the ways was happening. The difference is Manny HAS NOT been told such yet. For those worries about the recruiting pics and trail just take a look at how Kelly was with a recruit, on ND’s dime and time, when the news leaked in him. It’s inconsequential and part of the game.

And last but not least. Up until two weeks ago I was not bullish on Mario coming here. To say that has changed is a massive understatement. There have been significant talks between some of those that matter and represent the school. I’m not a betting man but will put out there that I’d be floored if it didn’t happen. The only hang up would be money but as I said before that is NOT an issue contrary to the same old bs that gets kicked around. JF understands what the market is and is not wanting to repeat this process again. Call me nuts, and all will not be happy, but we will be light years ahead of where we were here in about a week.

Thank you!!

First, I think Nunez would likely be another puppet hire and is probably exactly what Epstein wants.

That said, the previous AD signed the football coach to an extension right before Nunez was hired and I believe Nunez literally didn't have the money at his disposal to fire anyone and pay the buyouts. He has since made some moves recently.

He may actually be a good AD, but much like the HC hire, Miami absolutely needs to be going after bigger fish if they truly have a newfound commitment to sports.

You do not have a campaign stating you're going to take sports more serious than ever before, pump loads of money into said sports, then turn around and hire a no name AD that is only qualified because of where he was born.
I think this is the dude the Columbus bros want.

We are talking about UNM! A career football record of 494-621-32 (.445). People just want a name to say you see, we hired a name! It is just too **** funny

New Mexico went through some Title IX issues and were undergoing an audit when he was hired related to that - he inherited the mess and had nothing to do with it. Men's sports has been dealing with budget cuts and constraints related to that investigation to "level" the women's sports. Their athletic dept was in bad shape to begin with getting bailed out by the state for fired coaching buyouts.

Hard to make any kind of assumption on his ability as an AD from New Mexico.

No way they can conclude he's the best candidate for the job either based on that. He's gonna have to prove his worth if it's him
I presume they checked a lot on his LSU past.
