Tyson Campbell recruitment??

Been saying this for years. You don't always have to get the 5 star guys ....just be good enough in your evils to get guys that will project well every year and you'll be fine. Butch Davis did with guys like Reggie Wayne, moss and Ed reed.
This is in no way realistic in 2017. If you thought those guys were diamonds in the rough, you better believe there are far less of them. The numbers speak for themselves in that you NEED to recruit highly ranked kids to have continued success. While the “evaluators” on these sites are not “professionals” they sure as **** have figured out a better way of projecting players than they used to.

Our best CB is an unkown 3* out of Alabama who was a plan B-C guy. If a player has what you are looking for and you can coach and develop them then you have a winning recipe. It is nice to have 4-5* guys and they have their place but a 3* CB from Miami who played against all elite talent and held his own is worth looking at also.

While Michael Jackson wasn't that heralded, he was a 4 star.

Nah he was a 3*

Jackson was a 3 star everywhere besides rivals where he was a 4 star.

Quarterback and front seven on defense is the key to championships imo.

a good/great QB obviously helps, but give me a good/great OL and DL over anything else.

A good/great OL can make an average QB look good and allows him to manage games. Ken Dorsey was a **** of a college QB that managed games as well as anyone because he had an OL that didnt allow him to even get touched.

A DL that can stop the run and get after the QB without bringing extra guys allows above average DBs to thrive.

Winning Ships all starts up-front!

Yup, Michael Jackson was a 3 star. And none of Jaquan, Kendrick, RJ, Joe Jackson, Shaq, Pinckney, Bandy, Young, et al were top 100 players in the country out of H.S.

While, on average, you want the higher-ranked player, there are so many exceptions that it's absurd to blindly trust rankings.

Rj was hideously underrated. Malek was a 3 star. Bandy barely snuck in as a 4 star. Quarterman and Pinckney were 3 star kids. No one knew who Trent Harris was. The list goes on and on.

If we are going by the 247 composite Shaq was at 111 and was a Rivals 100 player.

In terms of Mike Jackson, he was a 4 star on rivals, but the composite did say 3 star.

Toolbox was a 4 star composite
https://247sports.com/player/trent-harris-23274

Trajan Bandy was a top247 composite 4 star, hardly barely a 4 star. Rivals had him at 109

Lol lot of revisionist history going on here. Bandy had no offers from any of the big 3, bama, Clemson, or Ohio state. OU is a great program but they usually have to settle for the second tier kids down here. Bandy couldn't wait to decommit to come here when we offered late. He barely snuck in as a 4 star.

No one talked about toolbox when he committed. Derrick smith was an afterthought. Carter was a 3 star. Pinckney was a 3 star. Malek young was a 3 star. Norton was a 3 star. Mcintosh was like the 700th rated player in the country and another lowly 3 star.

Stars don't mean jack SHI&, particularly when it comes to our Florida boys. There are literally 20 dbs here that could end up to be just as good or better than Tyson or Pat in college. I'd be flying whether we got thise 5 star boys or a kid like keidron smith. Missing on Tyson don't mean a thing- what will really hurt is losing out in a kid like Samuel, garner, or Edwards, or Wilson because we put all our eggs in one basket.

**** Adrian just shootin from the hip with so much confidence like he is spewing facts...all of it was bull****. What a terrible post. I love the "Shaq was a 3 star" comment. LOL...for a while Shaq was the #1 rated MLB in his class!

This Adrian person does not know Crootin. The previous posts have burned his limited and misguided BS.

It doesn't matter how many 3 star players you list out that were successful. What matters is looking at the statistical side of it. You're literally thinking stars don't matter because you can name a few players that panned out as 3 stars. I'm not going to look up the exact stats right now, but about 50% of 5 stars, 20% of 4 stars, and 7% of 3 stars are drafted. Giving me 100 examples of 3 stars that made it means nothing because of how many 3 stars there are. You have to understand the population size too.

This year it finally panned out for us. A ton of 3 stars are balling. But guess what? Over the past 12 years of lowly recruiting classes we've been ****. Then we finally have one good year and you go around beating your chest about how stars don't mean anything. That's just not how it works. We got lucky this year. If we go back to classes of 60-70% 2 and 3 stars we'll be good once every 12 years.

I've stated this previously, but for at least the last decade every team to win the championship has consisted of over 50% 4 and 5 star players. If we win it this year we'd be the first in at least a decade to not fit that category. Does that automatically mean that stars are wrong? No, you have to look at all of the data. It would mean that 1 out of every 15 or so years a team with lower star talent will win the ship.

Stop Trent Harris was a consensus 4 star recruit out of Winter park fl, Quarterman was just outside the top 100, Pinckney was a 3 star tho I'll give u that... Some of u don't follow recruiting hard don't pretend too...

Kendrick Norton was a 3 star. Even Jon Garvin was hideously underrated. Amari carter was a 3 star. So was Derrick Smith, nobody wanted this kid cause they just looked at the stars and assumed he was too slow to play safety.

It goes on and on.

He was a 4 star..

Adrian has a very good point. Some of you are too wrapped up with stars. Superstar talent comes from the lowly rated dudes in huge numbers. Taking highly rated 'prototype' kids is also a good idea cause they are impressive to recruiting services for a reason.

Best way to do it is get some high rated kids (which we haven't been able to do) and also grab some of the kids running under the radar using great evaluation that make plays.

We can't get away from the sefl kids like Vilma, Sean Taylor, Bandy, JJ, Norton, that aren't necessarily 5*. That's how The U dominates.

Give me Campbell and his potential and the sefl kid ballin like Ivey.

Man Campbell’s film is elite.

I would like to know the odds on him being a 1st round pick because I’d bet the farm on it.

3* by some. His point remains true. Garvin was not a 5* bluechip player but he's bossing the 5* from Cali.

Really?

So the 3-4* kids from south Florida is or is not bossing the 5* from cali?

Don't give me the but...but....but.....nonsense.

Talent evaluation and landing those targets are far more important than how many stars a kid has from the 'experts'.

Give me some of the 5* blue chippers, but I also love the 3* raw athlete from s Florida that come in hungry and ready to make history. Sometimes these 5* kids are entitled and underachieve drastically which can become a cancer on a football squad.

What the **** is so difficult to understand. Stars don’t matter because they don’t guarantee success but stars do matter because it’s statistically proven that the higher you’re rated, the better chance you have of being successful.

Tyson Campbell is the definition of a can’t miss CB prospect. Size, speed, dominates good competition in SF football, personal relationship with our CB coach.

People love to argue dumb **** and jump off the track like nobodies business here. Clean it up and let this thread be about who it's named after.

The truth is in the middle. Though I guess it's more fun to take an extreme position.

I think most here would agree that on average you'd rather get the higher-rated player. I think most would also agree that there are lots of 3 star guys who will be studs. And that talent evaluation goes way beyond just looking at rankings.

Thank you for your groundbreaking analysis.

If we end up in the playoffs and play bama we will go up against two 5 star sofla receivers. Rumph and Banda have done an amazing job and I hope our secondary will be up for the challenge. Every year we cry and say we need to keep the best talent home and now its just any south Florida 3* kid and we can ball out and replace as sofla 5*? Who else should leave then and we'll be fine? Please tell me since we can just switch TC out for anyone.
Then it must be true for other skill positions. Should we let Hall jump in the Saban helicopter too? What about Lo? Pope?
