Cornerback Tracy Howard had a message today for those criticizing Cane defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio.

"The fans outside, they see the players messing up so they are automatically going to blame it on the defensive coordinator," Howard said. "Because sometimes in football as a fan, they don't really know football. So when they see guys being cut loose they think `Oh, it's the defensive coordinator's fault.' Really it's the execution from the players. I think we have to do a better job of having his back in the games. Outside people, they don't really know what's going on, don't know football to be honest.

"I feel like coach D'Onofrio calls great games. It's up to the players to execute."

The defense was shredded in the last two losses.

"We know we're capable of playing better," Howard sad. "We've been making mistakes we shouldn't have made. The only thing we can do is get better."

Have cornerbacks been giving too big a cushion to opposing receivers?

"I don't know, I don't really care what anybody's saying because we run a lot of man, run a lot of schemes, mix it up a lot," Howard said. "We don't have one base defense we run the whole game. We mix it up with pressures, all type of stuff."

Howard says that "guys were just cutting guys loose" last weekend, and that the team is trying to address the issues in practice.

"Sometimes people don't learn, but everybody at least tries very hard at getting better with their mistakes," Howard said.

Were the mistakes showing up in practices before the games or did they suddenly appear on game day?

"It's a combination of a lot of things - in some cases guys clean up (mistakes) before the game, in some cases somebody makes a mistake in a game that they haven't made in practice," Howard said. "Of course there are areas in practice, every practice you're going to make some mistakes
We do our best to fix those mistakes. Everyone believes in you practice how you play. But we had a good week in practice, a great week coming off Florida State.

"Sometimes in a game it's a different atmosphere and things happen. … Other teams are capitalizing off our mistakes. We just have to get better at it."

Howard sums up that "I know (fans) are disappointed the last two games; we are too. They should be disappointed. When people are disappointed they point fingers, and of course they're going to point the finger at the defensive coordinator. But I feel like they don't really understand."

The fact none of the players are talking **** about our coaching staff and instead allude to their own mistakes say a lot.

This is such BS to me, if it happened only occassionally then I would buy it. But it is the same crap week after week, guys are wide open against this D all over the field, to me that is just a ****** scheme

If the coaches haven't been able to eliminate the same "mistakes" after 3 seasons, it's time to quit blaming it on the players and execution

Ah yes, so it has begun. This played out the same way during Coker and Shannon's time here. The article with the players defending the coaches comes out, where they put them blame on themselves.

Things are following the script perfectly.

Well we've had pretty much the same sub-par talent for the course of those 3 years. Like Tracy said "sometime people don't learn" lol.

What happened to WTH post?

I was gonna type up a response to his comment, anyway I dont think a player is gonna openly badmouth their Coord. Especially a college player. Fast foward 6 months if it changes and you will see quotes of, yea this Defense is better, the new guy makes it better/easier/simpler for us and allows the playmakers to make plays. Not saying the old guy didnt but I feel like this D is gonna surprise people. New coach is freaking awesome!

Yeah, no player is gonna be like "this ****** retarded." He'd ruin his career.

He's just parroting what they've drilled into his head all week - it's their fault.

Its called acoountability, its called a changing culture, its called a kid that knows that the better days are ahead and coming, its called stay the course and understand what has to be done to continually improve this program, and firing coaches is not gonna do it. Its called they know and you dont, hes our next highly drafted DB, whci would be the first since 2007

Man I still will hold on to what I think about Dorito, but what you're talking about seems to be the thing lost here. Kid made a bunch of statements of owning up to the mistakes, that is character I havent seen in a long time. I guess its one positive you can take away in a week that has been anything but.

Man F*CK Howard. Apologist. WTF does he know anyway? I post on a MESSAGE BOARD dog. All we need to do is fire Dorito and we will be playing for the MNC next year.

Where the **** is the senior leadership on this ******* team?

This is all regurgitated rubbish...it needs to STOP...immediately.

I agree with Cane4Life. Dorito has only been here for three years. It takes at least a decade to get your players to understand what to do on the field. Cut the guy some ******* slack, you negative ********.

C'mon. What else can he possibly say? Even the hint of blaming his defensive coordinator would be disastrous for himself and the team. I think it's very short-sighted to attribute anything to a player's answers to the media

the 2008 crew woulda melted down on this staff already, they were like these message board peeps, but to rebuild a program, A CULTURE, theres deep rooted chit that needs to be repaired that go way beyond X's and O's. We seem to forget how broken this program was culturally. This article says A LOT

Or you can just take his word for it.... there's that too.
