Cornerback Tracy Howard had a message today for those criticizing Cane defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio.
"The fans outside, they see the players messing up so they are automatically going to blame it on the defensive coordinator," Howard said. "Because sometimes in football as a fan, they don't really know football. So when they see guys being cut loose they think `Oh, it's the defensive coordinator's fault.' Really it's the execution from the players. I think we have to do a better job of having his back in the games. Outside people, they don't really know what's going on, don't know football to be honest.
"I feel like coach D'Onofrio calls great games. It's up to the players to execute."
The defense was shredded in the last two losses.
"We know we're capable of playing better," Howard sad. "We've been making mistakes we shouldn't have made. The only thing we can do is get better."
Have cornerbacks been giving too big a cushion to opposing receivers?
"I don't know, I don't really care what anybody's saying because we run a lot of man, run a lot of schemes, mix it up a lot," Howard said. "We don't have one base defense we run the whole game. We mix it up with pressures, all type of stuff."
Howard says that "guys were just cutting guys loose" last weekend, and that the team is trying to address the issues in practice.
"Sometimes people don't learn, but everybody at least tries very hard at getting better with their mistakes," Howard said.
Were the mistakes showing up in practices before the games or did they suddenly appear on game day?
"It's a combination of a lot of things - in some cases guys clean up (mistakes) before the game, in some cases somebody makes a mistake in a game that they haven't made in practice," Howard said. "Of course there are areas in practice, every practice you're going to make some mistakes
We do our best to fix those mistakes. Everyone believes in you practice how you play. But we had a good week in practice, a great week coming off Florida State.
"Sometimes in a game it's a different atmosphere and things happen. … Other teams are capitalizing off our mistakes. We just have to get better at it."
Howard sums up that "I know (fans) are disappointed the last two games; we are too. They should be disappointed. When people are disappointed they point fingers, and of course they're going to point the finger at the defensive coordinator. But I feel like they don't really understand."

The fact none of the players are talking **** about our coaching staff and instead allude to their own mistakes say a lot.
