The Seantrel Henderson thread...

As some folks who know me personally have said on the WEZ call-out thread, I'm a decent, stand-up type of guy--at least I try to be, and with other folks saying as much, I guess I've achieved that.

As such--I step up and say I was wrong about the Seantrel situation--mainly, about him not playing in the opener. I thought/hoped that he would make it back for BC and we'd have our starting RT back in the fray. With this news coming out today, I will step up and concede that I was wrong about his status for the opener. Those who said he would miss the opener--you were right, I was wrong. I ain't one to back away from calls I make that turn out to be incorrect.

Now, I don't think he's completely done as some folks want to proclaim. I hope he can get his head right and get back sooner than later. Having this dude on the team, even if he's not the starter but is just in the rotation, helps our OL depth tremendously.

Once again though--this isn't him being some idiot smoking too much weed or going on vacation or his daddy's rap career or whatnot as some have said...this is about folks who were important to this kid who have passed away, and his own brush with death via a car crash. His head and emotions have been fvcked with pretty hard as of late. I, along with a host of others, hope he pulls it back together in time to contribute to this team, and Golden said it best: He's got a lot of things going on. I'm going to keep it private with him. I think I owe him that. I think he's got to get himself together and then he can help the Miami Hurricanes."

So...just as Golden is doing, let's hope he gets himself together so he can then help the Canes. It doesn't matter if you're a fan of his or not, if you're a Canes fan--you've got to want the best for this kid, because he CAN help us.

FYI...the vid I just watched on hurricanesports.com just told me all I need to know. Coach Golden was asked DIRECTLY if Seantrell would play on opening day and he said, "We don't know. He is 23 practices behind, excuse me 20 practices behind".

At no point did he say he WILL NOT be playing...

I understand it is difficult to think he would play at all. I am sure that depends on our health, game situation (ie whether or not Flowers is getting it done), and how the coaches feel. Not our fan base's collective opinion on what this kid is doing, has done or may potentially do.

Hope Henderson can get it together and isn't one of those guys that looks back 20 years from now wondering what could have been.

All kidding aside I really hope the kid can get his situation worked out. I don't know if it's his head or his heart, but it's sad to see so much talent go to waste. It's difficult to believe that there isn't someone in his life that can guide him.

Golden says the abscenses are excused.

Not done

Ok. Keep believing that. You don't miss the first three days of practice for a funeral. One ok, three no. Either he is quitting football or maybe he is transferring. I'm going with quitting football.

So who are we to believe? You or GoldenAl? C'mon guy.

Hmmm. Al was always playing Mr. Diplomat. Saying the right things to the right people.

Can he be our best o linemen if he hasn't practiced once this month?

Our best o linemen shouldn't have spent the last three weeks attending funerals for his neighbor's dead hamster. I picture Seantrel seeing a dead butterfly, placing it into a decorated shoebox, and lowering into a hole as he plays the flute.

Our starting 5 on the OL, without SH, should return in 2013 intact. Play with who you have in practice and develop them as a squad.

From ESPN;
Any Miami fans still holding out hope to see offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson in the starting lineup for the season opener against BC might want to reconsider.

Henderson has missed 21 practices and still has “a long way to go” to catch up, according to coach Al Golden. Miami’s latest depth chart, which was released this morning, is likely to be the last of the preseason. True freshman Ereck Flowers has been starting at right tackle, backed up by redshirt junior Jermaine Johnson. Henderson could be medically cleared to rejoin the team as early as Tuesday, according to a source, but contributing to the team is not the top priority right now.

“Seantrel is going through some personal issues,” Golden said. “He had some tragedy in his life. We’re supporting him. The biggest thing for Seantrel right now is to take a deep breath, get around those that care for him and want to help him and get himself and his house in order. Once he does that, he can turn his attention to helping his teammates and this program.”

Aug 20, 2012 - Seantrel Henderson, the former top recruit in the country who has been plagued by injuries since arriving at The University of Miami, is unlikely to play for the season opener against Boston College after head coach Al Golden told the Palm Beach Post's Jorge Milian that Henderson needs to "get his personal house in order."

Henderson suffered a concussion in an Aug. 1 car accident — one that sent a 5-year-old girl to the hospital with a gash on her forehead that required 16 stiches, according to the Miami Herald — and has practiced very sparingly. He also reportedly has gone home to Minnesota twice to attend funerals.

Henderson was reportedly emotionally shaken during the car accident as well, and, coupled with the deaths of a friend and a family member, it's no wonder he's likely not emotionally ready to play. From the Miami Herald's report, this is the mother of the 5 year-old:

"My daughter was strapped on the board and shaking, and when [Henderson] saw her he was like, ‘Oh my gosh! Don't tell me this happened.' This is something that stays with somebody for a while."

Hopefully this is the young man's wakeup call. He's was the one that was cited for that accident, and he was not legally driving. That's 100% on him. But it sounds like he realizes it, and is having to deal with it. Thank God the girl wasn't more seriously injured. Hopefully he grows from his mistake, and from losing two people he cared about. Whether he plays again here or not, it's obvious that he has taken things for granted in life, and maybe his recent tragidies will set him straight.
