That's the culture issue. You're recruiting the wrong type of players. I'm gonna get heat for this, but I would rely less on the South Florida kids. I'm not saying don't take any kids from South Florida (that would be stupid) but they should not make up 80 percent of your team. As someone who grew up in the area, football, even at the optimist/pop warner level, is driven by street agents who have selfish interests and create "me first" football kids. Tracy Howard once said this in a footballville interview a few years back. I'm gonna get in trouble for saying this, but I also don't love the youth coaching in South Florida. Not all of it (there are some good coaches), but most of the coaches aren't that intelligent themselves. A lot of these kids aren't coached well at all and simply get by based on pure athletic ability and not intelligence and fundamentals.I remember the AL Golden quote "you need star players, but you also need kids that shovel the coal"....he obviously failed.
I think there is an entire ecosystem system that surrounds our players that whispers in their ear. I think our failed coaches haven't beem able to control it.

So, when Miami plays a team that on paper looks inferior, they often get defeated because a coach that knows how to scheme will always be able to take advantage of Miami's lack of football IQ. Jacolby George is a perfect example. Physically gifted, but he is a head case and doesn't play smart. He is a selfish player at his core (see the Syracuse incident). Miami needs a coach and/or a general manager that can find the SFLA kids that put the work in, like a Kam Kinchens, like a Restrepo, and steer clear of the divas. Then the coaching staff has to be able to develop and truly coach x's and o's. That's why I criticize Mario as a recruiter and evaluator. He chases star rankings, but he doesn't have a clear system and certain type of player that fits that system based on their work ethic and personality.
Chris Petersen, whom I have loved as a coach for a decade now, has always said, you build culture with the person first and the athlete second. Butch had this philosophy as well. That’s why he was successful. It wasn't because he picked the best athletes. Butch picked the most intelligent and coachable kids and DEVELOPED them because they could be developed. Until Miami fixes this issue, the last 20 years will continue for another 20 years.
