The running game

Not just thud- he ran for 150+ yards and 2 TDs against the first-teamers in a full-contact scrimmage.

It's a projection for sure, because he only has two college carries (a short TD and the long fake punt run). But it's an in-house option who we are already paying for. I think his body type is suited for the backfield long-term, in a multidimensional role.

Cant believe this conversation is still going..If you guys watched that game last night...UGA played 2 RBs mainly..Etienee and Frazier and Etienee got most of the carries. We wont be able to convince a RB to come join a room where we already have 2 main RBs and sell them on the idea that maybe one gets hurt and then you can get your carries. What RB would sign up for that this side of one who plays at FAMU and just wants a shot to play P5??? I agree with DMoney..if we want a 4th RB..use Loften. **** we couldnt even convince Ajay Allen stay in the room. Its not going to happen.
This is the dilemma.

It's not that we aren't worried about RB depth- I am very worried, and we need another body at the least. And it's very likely the RB room overall takes a step back without Martinez, Allen and CJ.

But nobody is going to sell a proven back without losing one of our current Top 2 backs. So the depth problem won't get solved that way, and we end up spending more.

I like @Memnon's idea of swiping a highly recruited back who hasn't played that much. That's more affordable and less likely to shake up the room.

Elija Lofton is not a RB lol.

He's an H-Back/Fullback/TE.

But putting him at the RB spot would be redundant given we already have Fletcher in the Power-Back role.
I agree 100%. Lofton is a utility player as in he can do so many things. He is very hard to cover so I have a feeling he will get a ton of plays scripted for him next year.

In this day of age, unless you’re absolutely loaded at RB (we are not) you need to take 2 RB’s per class. The frustrating part is the staff knew AJ was going to transfer and the possibility of CJ bouncing was high, as well. Louis was in our back yard killing it but we decided to go with 1 RB. We can’t get out of our own way.

My thought is that we can add another cheap body at TE (McCormick replacement) and then a moderately-priced TE with some receiving chops like Bauman from Tulane. That frees up Lofton to play RB if there are injuries.

Hopefully, Schott is able to give us some reps early like Lofton did.
We are adding "cheap" players everywhere. Something isn't adding up because we don't have superstars like everyone else in contention.

This should be our approach at ALL positions, including QB. Look for the to recruit that is on the bench. Because there's a great junior in front of them.

Does Miami & UGA run the same Offense?

We are adding "cheap" players everywhere.
We have the highest average player rating in the Portal, ahead of Oregon, Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Texas A&M and Ole Miss.

On top of that, we're saving money for Xavier Lucas (who will be one of the highest rated players in the Portal the minute he enters) and a quarterback.

Are you able to explain what part of that is cheap? Or are we playing fantasy football again?

It is 5 guys. I won't sit here and pretend with you that we have turned over the roster. Are you telling me we that we are handicapped because of a handful of portal guys 2 of which are coming off injuries? If we are pretending like 6 guys is our ceiling then don't rush in here after a disappointing signing day to say we are saving for the portal. Those teams you always want to associate Miami with aren't operating from a place of desperation. Miami needs safeties, corners, linebackers, tight end, running back. I'm sure they will add more lineman because that's a given. So I ask again who are the difference makers? I'm sure all those guys have "NFL grades" from the staff but what else?

We still need to add a QB, a WR, two good CBs, a safety, a linebacker, a TE, and an OL.

Again, this is why I'm so budget conscious. There is a lot of work to do, and we've already spent a lot on good players.

It's hard to recruit a Portal RB without promising carries. We were able to stack the room last year because Lyle was a true freshman and Fletcher was hurt.

You probably lose Lyle or Fletcher to the Portal if you bring in an expensive back. It could be an upgrade but you still end up with the same depth problem (and less money).
I get that bringing in a portal RB to play over Fletcher/Lyle 2 years in a row is a trickier situation than most think.

IMO - if we want to stay at the 10+ win level, then Fletcher/Lyle are not at the talent level where we can afford to worry about offending them.

I'm with you on Lofton's talent - but instead of a full time move to RB, I'd prefer keeping him at TE primarily and using him at times as a RB/HB/WR.

@DMoney - In theory - if we moved Lofton to RB and took carries from Fletcher/Lyle - what's the difference between that and a portal RB doing the same thing? Wouldn't we be better off getting a level-up RB (budget permitting & assuming one is available) and leaving Lofton at TE so we could have both of on them on the field?

We aren't elevating the talent high enough to overcome coaching deficiencies. We need to add great players at some point. Cam and Martinez were great players. Replacing great with ok and good doesn't take you from 10 wins to 11 wins. Please don't tell me there isn't another Cam.

The best running team (Notre Dame) and the two best running back tandems (Ohio State and Penn State) are in the Final Four.

Great point…But just a correction in that that ND RB tandem is better than PSU and right there with OSU. All 3 have a nice 1-2 punch.
