The running game

Another GIF guy. The board IQ takes a hit daily.

Lofton played RB in high school, played RB in spring, and is 6'1, 240 pounds.

Please explain why it's a stretch to play him at RB. Going strictly by his dimensions, it's more of a stretch to play him at TE.

He can do it all, but I think the backfield is his most natural long-term home and makes him even more of a mismatch in the passing game.
In the old days he'd be a absolute killer FB.

The only time a TuFf & FyZiCaL offense does anything worth a **** it's because they have an amazing defense. We did not have anything close to an average defense so 3 yards and a cloud of dust while only scoring 24 points a games makes us 3-9 this season.

I don't understand why you and so many others think running the ball is the answer. Look at Iowa and Kentucky for the perfect examples of what you want.

Yea, they'll have a good team every year but like our 2016, 2017 teams. They have defenses that can win them the game but offenses that lose them the game
Hmm... Idk... I say we try it, I say we try having a good team every year, and see what happens. Been a minute since we tried being a good team every year.

Agreed. These dudes are out here suggesting “if only the offense wouldve ran the ball more and we had Leonard or Castellanos at QB we wouldve really had a chance”

As if that changes anything about how absolutely atrocious our defense was. I can’t wrap my head around changing the offense to give the defense a chance when we were top 15 in holding onto the ball to do exactly that but it didnt matter.

They biggest thing that held back the team, (my opinion) is raw energy on the defense, and I'm not talking on gameday, I'm talking about every day from March until August, operating on Redbull and hatred. High energy and enthusiasm for getting to play suffocating defense. It ****es me off that Mario was so dismissive of the Turnover Chain, only to gift us this defense instead. Crazy. I feel like Mario is the kind of guy that sucks all the fun out of the room.

The energy was definitely lacking from the defense. I think it shows the lack of cohesion on the defensive staff.

Also its hard to get hyped when your unit constantly sucks ***.

It's hard to recruit a Portal RB without promising carries. We were able to stack the room last year because Lyle was a true freshman and Fletcher was hurt.

You probably lose Lyle or Fletcher to the Portal if you bring in an expensive back. It could be an upgrade but you still end up with the same depth problem (and less money).
Bring in an expensive RB and Lyle is likely gone.

I hear you, but they’re in the semis. Not many chances left to get exposed. If they’re in the final 4 they’ve basically passed the tests.
Bruh they played no one and basically were gifted that scheddy. I get it though you play what’s in front of you but they will be sent back to the shadow realm

Can't imagine why anybody is talkin about the offense and what they could've/should've done. We had the #1 offense in the country.

If the defense is the least bit serviceable we go undefeated or lose one game at worst.

Furthermore...
Cam Ward called a ton of his own plays, so take it up with him if you don't like the run/pass ratio. The staff gave him a ton of control.

I don’t think anyone is talking about the 2024 offense in this thread…

The concern for a lack of another quality RB is specifically for 2025. Again, I get the $ priority reason, but we better clean up elsewhere with all of this money we are allegedly saving by not bringing in a quality NEEDED back.

Also Lyle wouldn’t even make 3/4 of what he is making here, anywhere else and would still get a ton of burn here but whatever. All moot, hope ya’ll are right but having 5’9 185 pound Pringle as your #3 sounds risky as all **** to me.

I propose we "monitor"/back-channel UGA & Texas's RB rooms...

Both have young TF's & Soph's who will be the main RB's for them next year, while bringing in more FR's, which = someone from those groups are hitting the Portal.

Chauncey Bowens would be a good pickup if he could be enticed to seek greener pastures...
Please portal Roderick Robinson. 6'1" 235. Looked great against FSU in Bowl Game last year. Had some foot injury and only got carries against GTech this year.

The bigger honestly huge worry is having CWH as your #4 back he's think like CJ was at RB. Pray these guys in front of him stay healthy because he should not be getting snaps

Exactly.

Do you know why we ran well this year? Defenses feared Cam Ward.

Do you know who is not going to be here next year? Yep, Cam Ward.

Has Wario replaced Cam Ward with a decent QB? Nope.

I'm not going to get into the same discussion about this topic over and over again. The run game purely works differently to the NFL because of the fact that talent gaps are much bigger in college football. But the setup remains the same: It's the PASS.

If you cannot throw the football to save your life, you won't be able to run. Ask Iowa. They are the prime example of having really good offensive blocking and linemen (and Tight Ends) being drafted into the NFL despite their offensive production being absolute dog****.

The mantra that nothing goes beyond the run game was created in the time when football was being played in cold weather. Most playoff games happen in domes, and if they don't, they're played in warmer weather.

We need to be able to throw the football regardless. That's the number one task for any modern offense. Can we do that right now? **** no.

But, regardless of what happens, because Cam Ward isn't coming back: Dawson is going to have to scheme up different run plays and get 10x more exotic with the scheme. Spamming IZ won't cut it next year.

The story for me from the College Football Playoff is the importance of the running game. It's the same story we've seen the past 20 Januarys with teams like Alabama, Georgia and Michigan.

The best running team (Notre Dame) and the two best running back tandems (Ohio State and Penn State) are in the Final Four. The two best individual running backs (Jeanty and Skattebo) were in the playoff. Texas beat Clemson by running and then almost got upset when Arizona State outran them.

The frustrating thing is that Miami can run with all of these guys AND pass at a superior level. This season will hurt for a while.
The difference is our defense wasnt even close to them.
