Please don't tell me there isn't another Cam.
Gotta save some money for the spring portal to get a qbWe still need to add a QB, a WR, two good CBs, a safety, a linebacker, a TE, and an OL.
Again, this is why I'm so budget conscious. There is a lot of work to do, and we've already spent a lot on good players.
Def need another RB, but to also help with the depth issue Lofton to FB would be dope. You could still flex him out and have him matchup against LBs in the passing game.
Really? mean it’s Fletcher and Lyle that they would compete for snaps. Lyles is a sophomore and Fletcher though good isn’t great, if you think you’re that guy at RB that’s an easy room to come in and get snaps. Injuries happen all the time as well, though god forbidy anybody in that room gets injured. This is the dilemma.
It's not that we aren't worried about RB depth- I am very worried, and we need another body at the least. And it's very likely the RB room overall takes a step back without Martinez, Allen and CJ.
But nobody is going to sell a proven back without losing one of our current Top 2 backs. So the depth problem won't get solved that way, and we end up spending more.
I like @Memnon's idea of swiping a highly recruited back who hasn't played that much. That's more affordable and less likely to shake up the room.
PSU rbs are dirt slow and will be exposed vs a team there size and as fast or faster. Dont see them keeping that running game going when the comp gets tougher.
To be clear, I don't think Lofton should be a full-time RB like Lyle or Fletcher. He's a weapon, and his value is in mismatches.I get that bringing in a portal RB to play over Fletcher/Lyle 2 years in a row is a trickier situation than most think.
IMO - if we want to stay at the 10+ win level, then Fletcher/Lyle are not at the talent level where we can afford to worry about offending them.
I'm with you on Lofton's talent - but instead of a full time move to RB, I'd prefer keeping him at TE primarily and using him at times as a RB/HB/WR.
@DMoney - In theory - if we moved Lofton to RB and took carries from Fletcher/Lyle - what's the difference between that and a portal RB doing the same thing? Wouldn't we be better off getting a level-up RB (budget permitting & assuming one is available) and leaving Lofton at TE so we could have both of on them on the field?
do you think wheatley-humphrey or pringle could be RB3?To be clear, I don't think Lofton should be a full-time RB like Lyle or Fletcher. He's a weapon, and his value is in mismatches.
I just think he should major at RB/FB and minor at TE long-term. He's 6'1 and stocky. His length limits him a bit at TE and he's more unique in the backfield because of his ability to block like a FB, run like a RB and run routes like a WR. There's nobody really like that. For our purposes, he could play more at HBack/TE until we inevitably have injuries.
The problem with the expensive Portal RB is that you're paying a premium to upgrade from Lyle/Fletcher when there are more pressing needs elsewhere. I don't think you keep all three based on all the info I have, so it doesn't fortify your depth. @Coach Macho knows the dynamics as well and he said the same thing.
And we've been talking about this theoretically, when the reality is there aren't a ton of big-time backs in the Portal. Justice Haynes is the #1 back and he had worse stats than Fletcher. Makhi Hughes is the name we've talked about here, but he has family ties to Oregon and is the #7 back in the Portal. That ranking seems too low to me, but I don't think he's projected as a high-end NFL back or he'd be gone by now.
Budget-wise, I like @Memnon's idea of adding a blue-chip back that got buried at a big program. We can also add TEs (who are cheaper than top RBs) to reduce the pressure on Lofton to get snaps at TE. And hopefully Brock Schott can be ready to get snaps, as he gets here early and he is a similar prospect to Lofton.
Agreed. This year's RB class is ridiculous. 15 deep this year at least. RBs that would've gone 2nd or 3rd round last year will go 5th round this year due to the depth at RB.It’s one of the deepest rb class in the last 20 years. Honestly I know He’s going to the nfl but it wouldn’t have been a bad idea for Martinez to come back another season but obviously can understand why he declared since he’s a running back
I’m fine with thatBring in an expensive RB and Lyle is likely gone.
Not worth the risk. Keep Lyle and bring back Ajay Allen.Bring in an expensive RB and Lyle is likely gone.
You can, but you are just paying more to have the same depth problems with less years of eligibility. And you better be sure it’s an upgrade- I don’t see a ton of NFL stars in the Portal at RB.I’m fine with that
Can’t be held hostage. So what we can’t portal a RB for 2-3 years because Lyle?
Sure. That’s two different conversationsYou can, but you are just paying more to have the same depth problems with less years of eligibility. And you better be sure it’s an upgrade- I don’t see a ton of NFL stars in the Portal at RB.
You're right but they had athletes and 1st rounders littered throughout that defense. 4 1st rounders on that 19' LSU starting defense.Running game is very important in college because it’s hard to find a really good QB. Building thru defense and run game is easier
We had a good run game and great qb, if we had an average defense we probably still playing
Not to compare us to lsu but their defense wasn’t really good in 2019
Our OL will make sure we average 4ypc carry. Add a little talent and that easily bumps up to 5ypc. I think we'll be good because we're good where it matters most, the line of scrimmage.Martinez was pretty dang good but without him next year, I don’t see Miami being anything special in the running game. Fletcher is just ok and so is lyle so far.
We should just ride with Fletcher/Lyle, CHW and Pringle. Spend the money elsewhere on positions of need. RB really isn’t a position of need as of now. As you stated QB, OL, WR and DEFENSE.To be clear, I don't think Lofton should be a full-time RB like Lyle or Fletcher. He's a weapon, and his value is in mismatches.

He looked slow when I watched it unless he’s deceptively fast. I know one of them can break tackles like a ****, singleton did look the faster of the two and maybe smaller pause. I didn’t look up any of their biosHuh? Singleton is not slow…Not even remotely. He was sub 11.0 as like a sophomore or junior in HS and a home run threat, although had more long runs last year than this year. Allen is slow I'll give you that...but very hard to tackle.
It's amazing how the offense looks strong and talented with the SAME EXACT S&C coaches, but the D doesn't. It's almost like it's more Guidry's failure to teach and guys being untalented, more so than what Feld is doing.let’s hear about a new S&C staff. Also a new STC.
Defense isn’t the only thing needed
