The running game

That didn't answer my question but "focusing on groups is the entire reason we have a new hole/s in the team every year. We pencil guys in or anticipate development that never happens.
So now we're talking about something different. Development has probably been the biggest issue with this team for a looong time. I've seen endless amounts of freshman play at a high level, just to get worse every year they were here.

To answer your original question, no I wasn't shocked. But I'm not gonna complain and rant for the sake of it. My expectations have been put in check after 20 years of mediocrity, so now I'm just hopeful to see a quality season with hopes of eventually playing for a championship again. This year will sting for awhile because all we needed was to be slightly above average on defense, but couldn't even do that.

I'll say 2 things and be done with it.

1) It's not 2 different things in the slightest bit. The reason you and others feel RB is a waste of because you believe that 2 guys that have never been RB1 at the college level will improve, develop, grow however you want to label it enough for that not to be a concern. That has not been The Miami Hurricane way for 2 decades.

2) I agree we aren't chasing #6 like many of us wish for. The problem I have is people here discuss and compare Miami against the Oregon, Texas, UGA programs when in reality we should be focused on the Louisville, Syracuse, and now even SMUs. We discuss Miami here like a national contender when in reality winning the ACC would be the best season we've had in over 20 years. I hate arguing about Lanning and Day here when Brohm, Manny and Lashlee are our real competitors. We discuss Miami here like we are among the elite.

Funny you bring up the coaching because the 20 years from 1983 to 2003, Miami had 5 different head coaches and the results were the same... national championships and NFL talent.

From 2004 to 2024, Miami has had 6 different head coaches and the results are the same... no national championships and a steady decline in NFL talent.

Go figure

I honestly believed that Mario would upgrade the talent enough that the next coach could get us over the hump. Then @Rellyrell went ahead and posted the sobering reality that Lanning came in and cleaned house. I don't know how people are still finding hope, but "maybe we can get to the ACCCG" is our ceiling.

agree on S&C , we seem to lack explosive strength on both sides of LOS

Yep, and that's why this season hurts the most. We were very close and you can make an argument that we could compete with every one of these playoffs teams with the exception of maybe OSU. Put the 2017 defense with the 2024 offense and that's probably #6

With the direction college football is headed, I'm just gonna sit back and enjoy my Saturdays in hopes to be entertained. It's the Wild Wild West right now, so prioritize your life accordingly

If our running attack is going to look anything like it has the last couple of years, we need a power back. Whether that's Lofton in spot duty or someone from the Winter/Spring portal. We've been elite running between the guards two years running now.

Martinez was awesome at getting short yardage up the middle, while also getting many yards after contact on those runs. We don't have a replacement for those yards after contact on those runs in Fletcher/Lyle. Fletcher does well to have successful runs on those plays - check out his last carry of the year when Bell fell down missed his block and Rivers got beat, he still got the first down. He hasn't shown anything resembling the contact balance Martinez showed. Lyle showed very little on inside runs against high level competition. When Martinez and Fletcher were out against ISU we ran off-tackle twice with him goal-to-go.

We ran more plays off-tackle as the year went on, and I believe we have plans to get a bit more creative and varied on our runs, since we just signed a 185 lb running back. I sure hope the plan isn't to send him into the a-gap 15-20 times a game. But we're reall, really good running inside, and we became decently explosive on inside runs with Martinez this year (last year I don't remember any explosive runs up the middle beyond Brashad's run against Clemson - probably am forgetting some). If Brockemeyer is going to be our Center, based on his PFF grades we should expect better pass blocking but worse run blocking than with Carpenter this year. All the more reason we need another talented guy to run up the middle, as we should expect less stout blocking from the Center.

Who knows maybe we actual run a toss play or 3 to a RB a few times next year?

Gotcha - totally agree with lining up Lofton all over the field.

With the "we have needs elsewhere" - I agree. My worry is we're getting some nice players on D, but I don't know if we're getting impact players. And we're losing our Offensive impact players. I feel like we're on a trajectory to be a little better on Defense, and noticeably worse on Offense. We're just trading our defensive issues this year to Offense next year.

I also agree that the biggest issue is there's no RB that great in the portal anyways. There is no Judkins/Martinez like there was last year. It's really pretty thing. Haynes is probably the best and he couldn't take control of the Alabama backfield. Side Note - I can't believe how disappointing Richard Young has been at Alabama. Hughes also averaged 5.3 ypc in the AAC - that's worrisome.

I love @Memnon's idea of going after Chauncey Bowens. In terms of South Florida RB's I liked Bowens over Lyle last year, and Byron Louis over Pringle this year. I don't think any are sure thing/home runs and we'll see how it plays out.

In the end - this thread is about the Final 4 all have great RB's. But they all also have really good QB's, Pass Catchers, OL, and Defense. The recipe is to be pretty stacked at every position group. This 2024 team was so much fun to watch, but next year I don't see a path to filling all the holes we need to fill.
Pringle is better than Louis IMO.

Yall say that now...

Going into the season with just 4 RB's, with one of them likely not even being P4 caliber is unwise.

Our QB play will be significantly down next year & we'll have no choice but to run the ball a lot more. Defenses are going to see on film that they won't have to respect/fear the Passing game in the same way they did with Cam at the helm. You're chancing/risking a disastrous scenario trying to put it all on 2-backs & an unproven TF with an increased workload.

Not to mention, we're losing 3 TE's all who could block very well & a Bookend LT in Rivers.

You're Dancing with the Devil with this 3 RB idea...

But whatevs, yall have been warned

Nobody listens. But if we DONT find a QB, it’s going to be horrifying quickly. ND is gonna stuff our teeth down our throat. AL Golden defense blitzing and making Emory look like the 10th grade QB he is after what happen with him here is gonna sting too. The hourglass doesn’t look good. Writing is on the wall. It’s about to get bad. We REALLY need a QB.

Bring up run game all we want, PSU still has Allar who will be mocked as a top 5 pick NEXT year and probably go 1-2nd this draft as well.

Riley Leonard had 1st round buzz preseason as well. He’ll be picked day 2. He 4 levels above Emory.

Every team remaining has a QB who get picked and be on a nfl sideline. We had that THIS year. Next year we won’t have anything close to that.

Internet killed Miami
Just like it killed dating for most avg. men.

I think they bring in another guy for depth. But my understanding of the situation is if you add a frontline guy you will lose one to the Portal.

I just don't see any situation where we have the same quality depth as in '24. The better move might have been taking a guy like Byron Louis as the second back in the HS class, since we were likely to lose two to the Portal and CWH is small.
Bingo! Which is why I was so surprised when you kept downplaying the idea of taking 2 RBs in the last class. I wanted Louis or the kid from Canada but the staff was so cavalier about it which I never understood.
