The running game

The story for me from the College Football Playoff is the importance of the running game. It's the same story we've seen the past 20 Januarys with teams like Alabama, Georgia and Michigan.

The best running team (Notre Dame) and the two best running back tandems (Ohio State and Penn State) are in the Final Four. The two best individual running backs (Jeanty and Skattebo) were in the playoff. Texas beat Clemson by running and then almost got upset when Arizona State outran them.

The frustrating thing is that Miami can run with all of these guys AND pass at a superior level. This season will hurt for a while.
I also wish Mario knew how to run the ball. If we had a running back that was hot we'd rotate him out.

Mario says wants to run a power spread but I haven't seen it. Last year we were committed to running the same couple of plays when we were committed to running the ball.

The only identity our offense has had the last 3 years was Cam Ward. Other than that I don't know what we were. Honestly I don't know if Dawson is good or not because of that.

But more to your point, yeah of course. Nobody in the fan base is against having a running game. The entire meme about Mario being FYZICAL has more to do with how he tries to go about it. Mostly the unsuccessful way.

It's hard to recruit a Portal RB without promising carries. We were able to stack the room last year because Lyle was a true freshman and Fletcher was hurt.

You probably lose Lyle or Fletcher to the Portal if you bring in an expensive back. It could be an upgrade but you still end up with the same depth problem (and less money).
Fletcher would never leave, he's literally the most beloved player on the roster by the staff & is going to continue to get 50% of the carries-share no matter what.

Fletch was the same guy who called Martinez to come to Miami & share the backfield with him, he's not going anywhere.

They are bringing in 2 TEs for visits. And lofton is the emergency 5th back. There isn’t an elite rb in the portal and will be hard to get a guy worth anything knowing fletcher and Lyle are likely going to be the top 2. I mean Chaney is back in the portal maybe they can bring him back for depth

Elija Lofton is not a RB lol.

He's an H-Back/Fullback/TE.

But putting him at the RB spot would be redundant given we already have Fletcher in the Power-Back role.
CiS and moving players from one position to another and then being absolutely flabbergasted when it inevitably fails.

Not even a bold take but if Miami had a defense like the one we had
In 2016 or 2017 we would have won the title this season paired with our offense. It’s a shame Guidry wasted the year .
In our 3 losses we averaged 34 pgg(23,38,41) and still lost by a total of 10 points, that’s insane

You're Dancing with the Devil with this 3 RB idea...
I think they bring in another guy for depth. But my understanding of the situation is if you add a frontline guy you will lose one to the Portal.

I just don't see any situation where we have the same quality depth as in '24. The better move might have been taking a guy like Byron Louis as the second back in the HS class, since we were likely to lose two to the Portal and CWH is small.

If we are being honest our best option at RB to get someone impactful is definitely getting like a RS frosh or sophomore who has a **** load of talent, but hasn’t proven himself yet. Otherwise there is just no way we get someone on Martinez’ level this season. Honestly our best bet for that is convincing Martinez to return tbh.

The real issue is honestly that there is no way Fletcher doesn’t increase his workload no matter who we do or do not bring in at rb. It’s just not happening. So given that the only question is do you think Luke can be a guy that gets 35-45% of the touches out of the backfield or not. If no then yeah go for a top portal rb. If yes then all we can realistically want is a rb3 type or an unproven guys that was highly rated… like say we got Kevin Riley to come back here cause he realized he made a mistake. Thats like our best hope imo

Agree on Louis. Disagree on the theme. We had 300 yards and still lost. Ironically, we should have run the ball with #9!

I propose we "monitor"/back-channel UGA & Texas's RB rooms...

Both have young TF's & Soph's who will be the main RB's for them next year, while bringing in more FR's, which = someone from those groups are hitting the Portal.

Chauncey Bowens would be a good pickup if he could be enticed to seek greener pastures...

From watching football for years at the pro, college and high school levels, championships usually start with an elite defense. It’s a men’s game. Be physical. Can’t avoid or dance around the truth. Be more physical. Run the ball and stop the run, then everything else takes care of itself

I like this thinking. We can sell OL as well.
