Official The OC Candidates Thread 2.0

Candle was offered the job, and him taking this long to decide makes me think that he going to take the Notre dame OC job. I want Brian Johnson. I Hope Mario reaches out.
The only reference to Candle on the ND 247 board is the Lake’s article. The mod (Tom Loy) hasn’t listed him on their hotboard. Brian Johnson and Sean Lewis are both in there

Ignore me if its been mentioned as I've only been paying attention here for 2 days now.. but assuming the OC coaches QBs - a good option for WR coach will be Adam Henry from Indiana. He's been with the Cowboys, Browns, Giants, 49ers, Raiders, and at LSU. Coached OBJ, Landry, CeeDee Lamb, etc.

Tons of connection to the staff:
1 - Played 1990-1993 at McNeese State - same exact time frame that Lance Guidry played there
2 - Coached at McNeese State from 1997-2006 - Guidry was there from 2000 to 2003. Henry recruited several players from Guidry's HS programs he was coaching at from 1997-1999.
3 - With the Cleveland Browns in 2018 and 2019 - same exact time frame that Alonzo Highsmith was VP of Player Personnel.

Obviously there's also some overlap with Doug Nussmeier in Dallas - however, talking to Nuss could have been a way of vetting Henry for our staff as well and had nothing to do with Nuss as OC.

Wait, you're telling me that Mario talks to other OCs and HCs to get recommendations on candidates?

Just joking around, I hear ya, and I am SOOOOOO glad that you are back. I recently asked someone about you, to see if you were OK and still around in the world.

POST MORE!

I'm with you. I like some of the NFL guys like Brian Johnson, but it's hard to predict a jump (I thought Campanile was coming too).

But locking in on an indecisive candidate is problematic at best.
I'm probably of a similar mindset about candidates that may take TOO much convincing to even consider the position. Funny thing about that though is Mario's legal middle name is actually "Indecisio". It was his tio's first name.

Jokes aside, you'd think Mario being an elite recruiter would also know the point where you're allowing too much consideration time by the target or are having to sell them too hard but then again this is probably different for 16 yr old recruits than grown men in the coaching profession.

I do think we probably need to put any concerns about potential length of tenure here for assistants on the backburner though too. If a guy does even moderately well here he's going to get other offers. ****, Steele did a verrrry debateable job here and look where he landed.

I haven’t really given my thoughts on Johnson because I figure it’s a longshot, but it’d be a risk. Could it pay off? Of course. But it could also be a flop. He is obviously a phenomenal QB Coach, but his results as a play caller seem to be average on paper. The big year at Florida with Trask, do we give that to him or Mullen?

The hope would be that he has learned a good bit with the Eagles, gets TVD back on track, and calls plays to his strengths. I think he’d get us in the mix to land a top tier QB for this cycle too because he has a ton to sell as a QB Coach but obviously that would ultimately depend on our performance.

I just don’t know with him. Yeah, we could do much worse but it’d be wait and see for me just based on his history as an OC.
Maybe that’s why Mario met with Mullen. Most assumed it was an interview but as TOC has mentioned before there may have been another reason for the meeting. Mario was doing his homework on Johnson to assess how much influence he had while at UiF and how much game planning and play calling Johnson was responsible for under Mullen.

For sure, definitely a logical potential explanation.

Didn't Lashlee just return to the school he was working at prior to coming here? He just took one step up, and arguably might have been a candidate for HC once Dykes left anyways if he had stayed there.
Nobody knows how that would play out. Maybe they pass on him because people thought Dykes was the brains to the offense. Rhett wasn’t exactly running the same stuff from Auburn and UConn.

I’m just saying having success here as a coordinator speeds careers up. It can make you pretty fast or break you.

This a risky job any OC has to really think about accepting this job. You can fail here there is a high probability man. Keep stacking and things can and will change. I just hope they hire someone good.

When does the OC Candidate thread 3.0 get released? I'm hearing good things. Supposedly much darker then the first two. And by darker, I'm not referring to Bieniemy

3.0 will start right after the chicken bones and monkey paws are thrown on the table…

What do you like about Brian Johnson? You want him *pause* why?
Taco Hot Dog
Kyle Trash
Jalen Hurts

What's amazing is the job he did with making Taco Hot Dog and Kyle Trash look like competent QBs in his tenure at Florida University.
Then then tremendous work he did with Jalen Hurts.

Enough said. He can tailor his offense for TVD or for Jacurri.
AND THE RUNNING GAME.

OC/QBC and pay him north of 2 million a year, he's worth it.

But also, find someone else, let my Birds promote him to OC.

****, I'm stuck in between a rock and a hard place!

Hey guys, I’m new on Twitter. If guys are following Brian Johnson, is that a good thing?

Also, I am not new on Twitter. Just figured I would stir the pot and get this thread poppin again.

Well, he was at uf from 2018-2020, so it's entirely possible/likely he recruited these guys while there and that's when they started following him. I highly doubt these players would know he's the OC without the media picking up on it. Could be totally wrong, JMO.

He's credited as a primary/secondary recruiter on 247 for a bunch of South Florida kids from his time at UF like Marshall/Collier so probably related to his time there

As far as using this job as a spring board to a bigger job or HC job I see little to no risk because there's no way to get any worse.. this is the floor (right?) Might be a homer but trying to put fandom aside.. it would be very very hard to do any worse than 19 points per game. Much like Guidry.. the bar is set so low after giving up 40 5 times on defense. It will get better but it may not be great in 2023. You have 0 risk of losing your job after 1 year with modest improvement.

You know Mario is going to recruit good classes and access to Zo for making good evals. The OL talent infusion is hard to ignore. It's too easy to get a QB from the portal. Young talent at TE and RB.

The 1 thing that makes you hesitate as an OC is the ceiling of the existing WR room. No it's not a 1 year quick spring board but if you can handle a 2-3-4 year stay.. talent will improve across the board and you'll have an OL that will make everything else look good. If you score 25 in year 1, 30 in year 2, and 35+ in year.. 3 you are set for a really good G5 or a P5 job similar to Lashlee.

Similar situations recently are Elko using A&M to get the Duke job, Heupel using Mizzou to get UCF, Walters used Illinois to get Purdue, Dillingham used Oregon to get ASU, DeBoer propelled Indiana into Fresno State and then Washington. All examples of a guy taking 1-2-3 years to revamp a struggling (or outdated) O/D unit into a successful one and immediately landing a P5 or solid G5 gig.

Oh I know. If you are from South Florida, you follow him. That's just how it seems at least.
