Ok - gonna take a stab at it and put my Slurper hat on:
- Candle (would’ve been done)
- Frost (would’ve been done)
- Littrell (would’ve been done)
- Nussnut****tymier (would’ve been done)
- Cam Turner (would’ve been done)
- Arroyo (would’ve been done)
- Spencer Whipple (would’ve been done)
That obviously leaves a mystery candidate perhaps still coaching in the Super Bowl. If Mario indeed had talks with my #1 choice OC in Mullen for input as
@TheOriginalCane has said perhaps he is getting the run down on someone. That someone;
Brian Johnson
(Disclaimer: I am just throwing **** against the wall. Mario was competent in hiring his new DC).
Alright, let's look at the list.
Candle - Mario pursued him before, so this is like chasing a girl that you really, really want. I've texted with some prominent guys on the board, we are a bit concerned that there is an obssessiveness to chasing Candle that might exceed his actual excellence/brilliance. This is a hard one to analyze, as we've obviously prepared paperwork and made an offer; I've seen this before, you want to give your first choice every chance to land the job, but it backfires if it doesn't work out. Sucks.
Frost - "would've been done" in the sense he has no buyout, agreed. Actually, every other name on the list is (essentially) available. Which is why I think this one (Frost) hit the vetting wall earlier.
Littrell - same as with Frost, he's available. I think Littrell is suffering the effects of Candlemania (Mario is still screaming like a teenaged girl in 1964). Litrell has similar coaching resume attributes to Guidry, with some prior HC experience.
Nussmeier - can we just be honest, THIS ONE is more familiarity-based. I still think he is the worst name on the list.
Cam Turner/Spencer Whipple - I'm putting these guys together because I still like them as a package deal. Also available, may be a pivot choice.
Arroyo - stop trying to scare the natives. Also a "familiarity" choice.
I'd add in Johns, as I don't think he is super-UNavailable. Getting him out of Duke would be cheap-and-easy, on the level of Guidry's Tulane buyout.
Sooooo...in conclusion....I think the fact that the "most plausible list" is dominated by available names is less of a reflection that we are pursuing someone in the Super Bowl, or some mystery candidate, than it is the product of Mario pursuing Candle like he pursues recruits. He never gives up until a kid signs an LOI with someone else.
Just my take on the situaton. I'm not against Brian Johnson, I just don't think that's going to happen. I think the name is most likely to come from the list above, unless we manage to identify some talented guy who's had a really hard life for the last 12 years, and is available at bargain prices...
