Very different situation IMHO. Miami and Mario haven't the same pull with those NFL names that they had with Dorsey.

IMHO yes, that's why I don't want to think of NFL guys right now because I can only see young assistants or old retread that nobody wants for OC or HC jobs in the NFL.

With this "waiting for the NFL" I think we are trying to give an unlikely explanation for Mario's thorough hiring process.

Occam's razor: Mario is just slow with interviews/hirings. There is no NFL guy we are waiting for IMHO.

I tend to be an Occam’s razor guy but Mario did move pretty quickly with the DC search. You could make the argument that waiting on an NFL guy is the Occam’s razor explanation for why the OC hasn’t been named yet.

Or you could argue that Mario's attempt to hire Guidry to FIU in 2012 is the Occam's Razor explanation of why the DC hire went so fast.

I don't know if any of that is true or not (that's not a criticism, just hear me out), but two consecutive years of "waiting for NFL guys to decide to come back to college" is a load of garbage that needs to be taken to the landfill.

There are legitimate NFL guys who come back to college for real reasons to work with younger players. It's sincere with Saban. And Carroll made it work for a while in an environment (Los Angeles) that didn't feel like a college town.

But this idea that already successful NFL guys who seem to like the NFL are just chomping at the bit for a chance to cycle back downward through the college ranks for a cup of coffee...is strange...

And, sure, Mario may really like these NFL guys. But this is not some common career path where Mario is justified in waiting months for the end of the NFL season.

Dan and Mario need to lay down the law. "Waiting for NFL Godot" needs to close immediately.

If he’s making a significant offer then it’s very possible. I think people forget that Jedd Fisch propelled their OC role here into an OC role with the Jaguars. If they don’t get the roles they‘re looking for this years then this job would be a really good way to secure one next year or even elevate themselves to an HC. I think that especially in BrIan Johnson’s case that could be his exact plan.

If Mario hires Brian Johnson (or someone of that magnitude) I'd be shocked at this point and it would be a HUGE accomplishment.

Regardless of OC we need to start grooming the next batch of OCs. Go out and hire guys like Spencer Whipple, Deriq King, Pat White, Luke Falk, Tahj Boyd and etc as assistants and start grooming these guys so you don't have to always go out and hire elsewhere.
