my brother in the Lord, I think the fans are criticizing our defense based on the ACC games we have played and not the entire season taking into account: Ball St. FAMU, USF.

verses VT, Miami gave up 394 total yards;
verses Cal, Miami gave up 370 total yards
verses UL, Miami gave up 342 total yards.
VT has averaged 397.6
Cal has averaged 371.4
UL has averaged 459.9

FSU is averaging 276.6

I fall into the same trap as everyone else on occasion. You pointing this out with numbers is a good thing. We have played some really good offenses. But it's like I said, if you listen to PESN's announcers, you would think we are watching the MTSU/Miami game in 2022. It's standard PTSD outside of the NPES announcers setting viewers up for 6 teams from the SEC getting into the playoffs. They have to lay the ground work for this.
which offenses have we played that are really good aside from Lville? Cal is trash and mendoza torched us with the coverage busts. we just allowed a record for Lville. this defense isnt good at all.

Doesn't look nearly as good when looking at only in conference results. Small sample size for us (3 ACC games) but think the truth is somewhere in between in conference stats and the pretty rosy picture the stats above show.

Pts per game ( was pulled from the Syracuse vs Pitt game thread which is why Pitt is highlighted)

And what offenses is each of those teams playing. If you are going to try to filter it why not use adjusted metrics based on quality of opponent offense… cause VTech and Louisville are two of the top 3-4 offenses in the ACC

wait, are you saying that our defense is a lot better than what people are saying?
Actually you used passing yards for Louisville, the total yardage was 448, still below average.

The data indicates that we've held offenses below their average yardage. I should also note that average includes the game against us, so we've actually lowered their averages. I'm not sure that's possible with FSU, because the average 276 total yards.

Sure, if we want to just make **** up

Among ACC schools:
- 7th in Points allowed
- 5th in Passing yards/game
- 2nd in Rush yards/game
- 1st in Total yards/game allowed
- 5th in Avg Yards/Play
- 2nd in 1st downs given up
- 3rd in INTs, 2nd to last in Fumble recoveries (bad)
- 3rd to last in 1st downs given up by Penalties (so bad).
These next 2 offenses should not give us fits. If they do, I would support the former opinion.

Hope they’ve realized that settling for Marshall and Vanderbilt castoffs at DB is not the way

They need to be as aggressive there as they have been in at other positions

But then you look at Indiana, Iowa State or Pittsburgh and they did a good job getting castoffs from similar schools. Look at FSU, they got guys from Bama, LSU and Georgia who were all busts. Miami just needs to do a better job at eval on the DBs, you can find good ones at the G5 and lesser P4 schools.

I don’t care who you put at db if you give them all day to throw the ball . Rushing 3 there blocking with 6 example that pas vt caught in the end zone . Lucky we had a guy out bounds touching the ball . He should have never had that much time to Throw the ball . I blame the d cord as much as the dbs on his tactics . Give a qb guessing is the key to weaker dbs

Agreed, I actually posted in the Pitt vs Syracuse chat as much last night. But while I think it is hyperbole to call Miami the worst defense in the conference, I think it is also misguided to not acknowledge that there are major issues on the D right now that I don't think can just be chalked up to 'VT and Louisville are top 5 ACC offenses'

The post I referenced:

"I should add that those results include Pitt's win tonight and their previous two games were UNC (who is terrible this year) and Cal (who averages 21 a game including their 38 against us). VT and Louisville are significantly better offensive teams - at least by in conference stats - than UNC and Syracuse. Obviously the common opponent of Cal does not bode well."

I have also been saying we have big problems with our defenders. But it is a straight up fact we have an elite DL of talent. Period. This was a post saying we have the worst defense in the ACC because of Mario’s poor recruiting. It was a plain dumbass post that was incorrect on multiple levels

Season is going too well to worry about a side show like recruiting right now. You add the fact that the HC is a recruiter with a history of closing strong and you have a situation where if you are worried right now, it’s just your natural inclination.

I’ll wait til after the season. There are concerns for sure but I have a feeling a good amount are worked out and if not we will have a long offseason to fret over them.
The portal has gotten better every year as well. So looking to see us be better at putting the two pieces together more efficiently the longer Mario has been here

First couple years felt a bit like scrambling to fill roster spots at times rather than an actual plan
