Talking to DMoney earlier, is this UF game...

Don't think the situations - now and that era - are similar.

It's a huge game because we have not won a single primetime matchup in the Golden era. I'm less worried about sparking the next great era for our program and more concerned about seeing some evidence that we're being led by someone who can do more with less. Golden has done "more with less" from every standpoint other than on the field. It's time to transfer that ability to the scoreboard. Let's do this.

We haven't been good enough to be in a "primetime matchup". So I don't think he has actually lost one yet. The games against FSU and Notre Dame mean alot to us for obvious reasons but the only reason the rest of the country paid attention was because of expectations for those schools and our tradition. It wasn't because they thought we had a shot to win. ****, Herbstreit said at the beginning of last year's FSU game that he just wanted to see us compete and not get blown out like the 2010 game and the games against Notre Dame and Kansas State.

Saturday's game is the first in Golden's tenure that he has a team capable of beating a top 10 team. Partly because that Gator team is vulnerable. He gets them at home. Lets see what he can do.

The Ohio Taint game was a primetime matchup that The Don won.

I'm still cokerized. I don't want to be uncokerized until it's proven that I'm no longer cokerized.

Beating big SEC team means everything in recruiting right now. Staff has been closing down access to many schools. WVA doesn't get pick of litter of Miramar any more. FSwho got booted by Coley's hire. Staff is making inroads at STA to close down OSU and ND pipeline. BTW is back in fold. Central has Cane at HC now--they have so many D1 that you have lose some. NW is still sending studs. Staff is pushing back into Carol City and moving up Broward and Palm Beach. Right now swamp scum are the may comp for many top recruits here. Beat them and they will lose influence. So will other midrange SEC schools. Bama lost Southland and I don't think Mario will make up for that loss. Winning ACC is great, but beating swamp scum puts us in NC hunt. Clemson and us meet in title game undefeated with both having big SEC wins means the winner plays for the NC. That means a lot. We pick our recruits after that because every kid in American wants to be at THE U when it is actually back; only some want to come in on the hope/ We need that gator skin hanging on the door as warning to rest of SEC.

the difference between this season being more like 99( where UM went 9-4) or 2000( when they were national title contenders).

I think it's this simple, beat the Gators and this team swells with confidence and is a threat to anyone on their schedule( which is laid out very nicely this season) but if they lose, well, who' knows?

This game is at home, they come in healthy and this perhaps the best team UM has had in years. This game is huge in so many respects. I think it's one of those games that can potentially have ramifications far beyond the afternoon that it's played on.

But back to my original statement, do you agree or disagree?

Agree, also, think this coaching staff has them in a different mental frame of mind.

So, is this the Penn State game from '99? We win that game, and '99 is probably different. We don't lose to ECU the next week and probably don't get blown out by VT. We might have even beaten FSU in that 31-21 game that was tied 21-21 in the 2nd half.

So, the answer is yes.

I was at the ECU game and I remember all the injures as well portis showing his skills.

Pretty sure we had to start Popovich for Ed Reed that game. I'll never forget Kelly missing a wide open Moss in the endzone at the end.

I disagree in the sense that I don't think this one game makes or breaks us because we are who we are; a team that is headed in the right direction but not there yet. I know you reference 99, but we could have beaten Penn State and we still wouldn't have been a national title contender. Kenny Kelly would have still been the erratic inaccurate QB that he was, and we still would have lost to a FSU team that was better than us and a Va Tech team that was better than us. I'm excited about this season, but I don't have this delusion of grandeur that we are something that we are not.

just my .02

K9,

I don't see it as 2000. In 2000, our defense was filthier than it is now, particularly on the Dline. That 2000 team knew it was special. On the other hand, the 1999 team figured out late that it could be special. They beat UCLA, had an epic offseason strength and conditioning summer, and came back very focused for 2000. UCLA was the trigger win. We haven't had that trigger win. Maybe this it, or maybe it's FSU. The program has to win a game of that magnitude.

You had me until UCLA mane!

I think there is plenty of talent on the team, but I have yet to see 11 killers on the field at once. Im waiting for that "Oh ****" moment, where someone just absolutely murders an opponent or takes one to the house when it matters. We have really **** the bed lately when it comes to the spotlight. I am optimistic and hopeful, but just not sold on Al manufacturing a killer instinct. He's too Joe Paterno, grooming men of nobility, and not enough Jimmy Johnson, holding 50 angry pitbulls on leashes feeding them scraps.

well atleast south fla goons already have that instinct in them hope they unleash it even more

Interesting perspective and one which deserves much more thought. You might be on to something. Lets see how this year unfolds.

Al Golden is building a smart, tough, well coached team.

It's a different world to the Jimmy Johnson days when we could just put superstars at every position and tell them to go **** people up.

We'll get there under Golden. He recruits guys that fit his mental make up - and when you add talented players to a smart, tough, well coached team good things happen. I think we're getting there now.

Like a VT, Stanford or Oregon style D? Smart kids and no goons?

I still kind of miss when we had them Looney Tune Goons on the squad.

Disagree. Big game? Yes but nothing like 1999 or 2000 in terms of personnel, coaching, team getting over the hump, position of team, team make up etc. Miami could win this game and then lose to some garbage 4-8 team. Atleast with Davis you pretty much knew you were going to beat the teams you were suppose to beat. With golden you don't know that.

I don't care anymore about comparisons.

i don't want to hear more about clouds (even as I fully acknowledge them as factors in recruiting).

i just want my mother freaking hurricanes to be HURRICANES AGAIN.

where every game is a win cause we aspire for the biggest prize, not steps. I've had enough steps and processes for the last ten **** years.

i want my school, my team, my passion to be them again, where most of the time their talent blows away the other team, but when the other team is as or more talented, they freaking step up and play out of their minds in a way that befits their legacy.

I want to be able to say fu to UF forever as they ***** out of playing us again.

i want for the first time in way too long for my 2500 mile trek for the big home game to be memorable for something more than seeing that I'm holding up better physically then my steroid using buddies from 20 years ago now are.

just win the **** game, talented or not, issues or not. Shock the world again **** it. Then everything else flows. All will be right in (my) the world again

Look, we all want to murder the Gators. We all hope to go out there firing on all cylinders and put a whooping on them. And by God, I certainly hope that we do.

But let's get one thing straight.......winning this game does not get us to the ACC championship. It means nothing to our ACC record.

I truly believe that win or lose, the team must stay focused on the ultimate task....and that is getting to the ACC Championship, then hopefully winning it and getting to a BCS Bowl game. This would be huge, for both the team and ESPECIALLY recruiting.

But it would do us no good to beat the Gators, have us celebrating over this victory and then lose one of those trap games vs the likes of a Virginia, Pittsburgh, UNC, GT, etc.

Whatever happens this Saturday, I hope Golden keeps this team concentrated on what truly matters. Winning the ACC.

Kill yourself

Clearly Golden gives the goons a chance (Terry/Johnson) and has stated that the team doesn't really have many rules.

So he's not opposed to recruiting those types of kids. He's just been let down by them so far.
