Stephen Ross to Fund Stadium Renovations

SMU basketball program got tired of being bad. No one went to the games.

So they bought Larry Brown, paid Jancovich a boatload to be HCIW, and spent 50 million on stadium renovations.

Private school in a metro area with lots to do, poor fan support, and in a lower conference.

But their admin wanted to win and got it done. They are now a top 25 team headed to the tourney.

No excuse for us to be where we are as a program. Our admin just doesn't care.

Can you just follow another team please

Brown was SMU's 4th choice when others turned them down. They got lucky....that's all.

A few things. Bottom line if Canes fans don't want to pay for a new stadium by supporting the team then we won't ever get one. A English soccer guy that doesn't care about UM isn't going to build UM a stadium. The City of Miami/Dade County isn't going to build UM a stadium.

The best and only deal on the table is the SLS upgrade that is the only show in town.

False, false and false. Agree to disagree.

Agree to disagree. I believe with all my heart that Beckham is using UM's fans to help get the local political support he needs to acquire land from the city/county and will ditch UM in a heart beat if he gets the land. This is the same game plan the Marlins did with all those duel stadiums designs that included UM till they didn't need UM any more.

Did they get lucky in making Tim Jankovich the highest paid assistant in NCAABB?

Did they get lucky in spending FIFTY MILLION on the stadium?

Read the post, understand the point made, THEN talk. The idea isn't that they hired a legendary coach.....it's that they a) agreed to pay him b) agreed to pay for a top assistant c) spent 50 million on a stadium

I don't like Beckham using UM to help get city/country financial help with land to build a direct competitor to UM that will dilute the same sports dollars UM competes for. I feel any Canes fans supporting Beckham is just helping him damage UM's ability to sell tickets. Direct competition as in MLS plays primarily on Saturdays during our football season. I guess some of you would love to see Miami playing on Friday night since MLS would be using that stadium on Saturdays. It takes money to run a successful Athletic program and Miami doesn't have enough money to compete with most top 30-40 teams in the country now.

Miami doesn't have enough fan support or donors that will fund a stadium project. It took over 10 years to raise $30M for the BUC and Ryder gave them almost 40% of the money. Everyone demanding UM builds their own stadium only has one plan and that is for someone else to pay for the stadium other than the fans. Unless the Canes fans support the team there is ZERO business case and no reason for the 40 people on the UM Board of Trustee to vote for waste tons of money and put UM a billion dollars in debt with 30 year loans to building a new stadium so fans can stay home and watch the game on TV for free.

If UM were to build a stadium it will have to raise at least $350M to buy land and a small stadium with little to no luxuries. Beckham plan isn't real for UM. Before the SLS deal the city/county told Donna to cut a deal with FIU or Dolphins since they won't give UM Tropical park or any public land to a private corporation. The Fins pay $3.8M in property taxes each year and UM would have to pay millions in property tax and at least $1M more on maintenance and insurance each year with our own stadium. That money could be better used to build facilities like a indoor practice facility and paying new Coaches more money that win more games.

There is only one reason for a the UM Board of Trustees to build our own stadium and that would be because we could make more money than we do now. Which is impossible for a team that can't put butts in the seats. If you want to see UM disband their football team then bankrupt UM building a stadium where they still won't be able to sell tickets that can pay for that stadium, taxes, insurance and maintenance. We have a great deal now with SLS where we save $2M a year over what we paid the city for the OB. We need a winning football team and excitement to put butts in the seat so that is where we need to spend our Athletic Dollars is building a winning program.

Jankovich is getting paid $700K vs what Coley and D'no get paid is not close.

Didnt UM just spend about $15 mil on upgrades to the facilities on campus? And arent they planning on spending another $7 mil on the practice field?

It's nice to say they spent $47 mil on their arena, $47 mil on an arena upgrade goes a long way. Not the same with a stadium. They also own their arena vs leasing it. Everyone know when you lease something, upgrades are done by the owners, then they can charge more on the lease.

Paying someone a ton of money doesn't mean anything. Look what we paid Coker, etc...

I give you the stadium point, but they didn't even think of Brown on their coaching search. That was the point I was making. It's not like they went out and hired Phil Jackson.

That could quite possibly be the silliest attempt at a correlation I've ever witnessed.

Why can't someone be a soccer fan and a college football fan? The games aren't even typically at the same times...MLS plays a ton of their games during the week. College football is primarily a Saturday thing. In addition....soccer for the most part touches a separate demographic...especially in South Florida where it's more of a Latin sport to begin with. There's no direct competition there, and even for someone like me that happens to love BOTH (imagine that).....one would in no way, shape, or form deter me from buying tickets for the other.

And as for Beckham...we should be kissing his ***. He'd being doing this program the biggest favor since UCF beat us and put the nail in Shannon's coffin.

Who cares if he benefits...good for him. All I care about is the University of Miami would be in a MUCH better situation in a smaller stadium in Dade county much closer to campus.

What is silly is you are gullible enough to think Beckham and his investors are going to build UM a stadium that fits our needs with their money. The last MLS team in Miami went bankrupt and wasting money over building a stadium would be foolish. Beckham is the pretty boy PR face of the Miami MLS team not the money men that are funding the stadium.

This is the MLS schedule. During football seasons starting Aug 30th to the end of their regulars season November 18, 2014 the MLS plays 51 games on Saturday (mainly night games) and 37 games on other days. Then MLS goes into their MLS playoffs schedules that runs into December that are also on Saturdays.

I'm not even sure that UM could play at noon on Saturday and have the field ready that night for a MLS game since football just damages a field so much and soccer needs a real smooth surface. No way we could play a 3pm game and have a night MLS game in the same stadium. Beckham would have priority of the schedule not UM and he would be a fool not to take the best times. That including the Post-Season MLS play-off in November that could force UM to move a home fotoball game to our opponents stadiums since the MLS team needs their stadium on Saturday.

What I do know is the #1 issue I have playing at SLS is the field is too wide from the stands and after SLS upgrade it would be the same width between the field and the stands as playing at another MLS soccer stadium. I put my support behind the Dolphins $400M upgrade not on a pipe dream some English soccer guy is going to build UM the perfect stadium that is better than SLS with $80M.

I care about UM making enough money to field a great football team. Selling more tickets and parking passes even just for big games is a priority to me for athletic revenue and the cost of the lease of the stadium.

My support is with the Dolphin upgrades. Not backing some kim kardashian like pretty boy underwear model that is using UM to his political advantage to get free public land to create a direct competitor for sports dollars that plays the same Saturdays as UM's football team. Canes fans should be supporting the Dolphin upgrade plan that is the only real deal in town. The City/County won't do both the Dolphin upgrade deal and also give the MLS access to public land downtown.

Beckham and his MLS investors plus the Dolphins both want the Tax Free deal on their stadiums. The Dolphins deal is real for UM and Beckham is a phony that is using UM and won't benefit UM.

How about the third option? Find our land and build our stadium. We could do it. Shalala could easily do it.

How about Momentum 3? Nah, we're cool at No-Life.

I 100% fully support UM building their own stadium. You are being naive when you say that Shalala could easily do it, that is if you mean raising $350M or more to buy land and build a stadium. Fact is I gave $1K which was big money for me to help build the BUC and that was when someone like you called me on the phone on behalf of the Hurricane Club asking for the BUC donation project.

I am sure UM would welcome your support if you want start dialing for dollars to help donate money to start funding a new stadium if you think raising money is easy. Everyone that wants UM to build this new stadium needs to join the Hurricane Club that starts as low as $50 a year. Also, if you donate money to UM you can ear mark that donation so that it can only be used to build a new stadium that will be used as an investment that will grow over time. That was how the BUC was built and it took over ten years to raise enough money (about $30M) to start the project.

Mazel tov on your donation. We couldn't of done it without you! Gloating about your donation? You don't know me and I assure you I didn't call you or make calls for the school.

You are still missing the point and being very simple.

While the fans need to do more (at the very least donate $50.00), the plan should come from the top IMO. They have the power to orchestrate the effort. Like I said, Shalala raises billions during her tenure, she could raise another $350 Million (assuming your BS number is legit) if SHE MADE THIS A PRIORITY. How about we issue some debt? How about we sell the naming rights? How about we take the land we owned (by the old zoo, oops too late thanks hospital short fall in 2013)? How about a ***ing plan?

It is about priorities. Like you wisely said, agree to disagree.

The joke in the Hurricane Club is "How did UM Donors get Rich? By not giving their money to Miami's Athletic Program"

Fact rich people would rather give their money to Medial or Academic projects than to Athletic projects. Try the UM Frost School of Music that was named from a $33M gift from Dr. Phillip and Patricia Frost. Dr. Frost, former chairman of the University of Miami’s Board of Trustees.

You are still missing the point. If the fans don't support the program by buying tickets, the board of Trustees aren't going to spend money building a stadium that will lower UM's Athletic Revenue. Miami’s Board of Trustees is made up with 40 rich people that know how to run a business. The Miami’s Board of Trustees is the only power at UM and Donna reports to them.

BTW, Shalala is doing the "Football Victory Fund" project now that is trying to raise just $7M for just the football team. You act like Shalala can pick up the phone and get $7M without blinking. Even with Shalala and other full support it will take years for UM to just raise $7M.

A flat out agree to disagree.

You are wasting your time.

Yup.....my bad

“The Orange Bowl Committee applauds Mr. Ross and the Miami Dolphins organization for continuing to explore ways to modernize the stadium and improve the fan experience including at the historic Orange Bowl Classic. Additionally under the new postseason College Football Playoff structure, College Football Championship Game sites are now being awarded via a highly competitive bid process. South Florida and Orange Bowl Committee efforts to attract future College Football Championship Games will only be enhanced by a modernized stadium. Our focus is to recapture the magic experienced with the 2013 BCS National Championship featuring Alabama vs. Notre Dame and the significant economic impact on our community.
