Stephen Ross to Fund Stadium Renovations

Just win. We will ALWAYS have a home field advantage with the heat and humidity against most of our opponents. We have home field advantage in recruiting. So what if the professional football stadium we play in isn't perfect.

Not saying there isn't room for improvement, but a decade of mediocre product has damaged the leverage power a little bit. Win games and the people will come. Big games are rockin at SLS, we just haven't had many in recent years.

This is as good as the schools wants it to get unfortunately. We should not accept this.

Fixed

Why does everyone including me still love the Orange Bowl days that had all the same issues as SLS with the exception of the narrow sidelines at the OB? Both SLS and the OB are far from UM's campus. Both UM and the Dolphins shared the same OB for a long time together. Both the OB and SLS were too large for our fan base for many of our seasons. The OB just like SLS are stadiums we leased and never owned.

Anyone that has ever been to UM's campus or knows anything about Coral Gables knows UM will never have a on campus stadium for many many reasons.

To me the biggest issue between the happy days of the OB and SLS are just that we were winning back when we think of the OB and have struggled ever since we joined the ACC even in the old OB. I think winning again would fix our issues with SLS.

Sure, a lot of it is just missing the glory days. The old lady was like our Wrigley Field...old, loud, and intimate. Whether it was downtown in the background, unique parking locations, city of Miami police nowhere near as anal as MDPD. There are a myriad of reasons why people (me included) complain. But truth is, Sun Life IS what we have right now, it IS convenient to a lot of people from the tri counties, and when it's full (UF game) everyone raved about it. I'm not one to keep reiterating the whole "just win" mantra, but in this case it's the truth.

The new upgrades could wind up being awesome for all we know. But winning and asses in the seats and tailgating are what make the environment better.

Except for the small fact that the OB was ~20min (students had access to the metro) from campus and SLS is ~40-45min (students are forced to take buses or drive).

That makes a HUGE difference.

IMO it wasn't the student section at the OB that made it a great home field.

I have to respectfully disagree. It was the closed end. It was the west end zone and it was teams having to call plays in that part of the field. Of course there were other things that were great too. The talent in the Stident section was great.

The west end zone was much more than just students. I should have made my point clearer.

If the improvements keep Super Bowls coming to Miami, I'm all for it.

They maybe great. They may suck. Either way we aren't putting a Stadium on the lake and we are still going to listen to people like Beckham, etc.

Sit back, ***** and moan. Watch the game on TV or show up and root from there. The power is yours.

The west end wasn't the students at least from 1989 until the end.

Seriously. I remember the student section forever being from about the 20 of the open end (next to the band) to about the 40 behind the Canes bench. There definitely was talent there and it was up there with some of the best student seating in college football.

For those that think this move by Ross would make our SLS lease even more ironclad the opposite might actually be true. Ross is in a position with this proposal where he still needs cooperation/tax concessions from the county. If Dahhhna really wants the Beckham deal to happen she has more leverage with county politicians to force Ross' hand to void that lease than she does in directly dealing with a guy that's probably planning a halftime celebration of the Zook era gator teams as I type this.

It will still be too big. It will still be used against us in recruiting and in the media. The University will still be doing the program a disservice by having us play there. And it will still suck as far as gameday experience, regardless of whatever bull**** retrofit they do in an attempt to bring the seats closer. A home at Beckham's stadium (assuming it would be big enough...I know its a longshot so STFU) would still be a better alternative in many aspects. Joe Robbie has, and always will be, a 'meh' place to watch a football game, and a horrible place to watch a college football game, and it will remain as such right up until the day they level it (and may that day come as soon as possible) and build a football-specific stadium.

The problem isn't that it's not the Orange Bowl, the problem is that it's Sun Life.

All that said, looking into the future and at the ACC's television contract, the covered seating is BIG BIG BIG. Unless this program is back in the top 10 on a regular basis (a stretch), then there are a whole lot of noon games in the future.

Broadcasting companies do not care what the attendance is at the actual stadium when selecting what teams to air and at what times. Their only concern is with how many people watch on television and thus stadium attendance is irrelevant. Miami is a great television draw.

And it is not a stretch at all for Miami to be a top 10 team on a regular basis. Miami will always be a coach away from greatness.

Not sure what got you going on that, never said they did.

If you haven't noticed, because ESPN/ABC/Disney owns the rights to ACC broadcasts for the next dozen or so years, and they also have the rights to SEC games, they've taken to serving up ACC games as an amuse-bouche of sorts before their SEC afternoon and nightcaps. In fact, they are contractually obligated to show a large number of SEC games in primetime, on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU, leaving very little in the way of night games for the ACC.

As a result, something like over 40% of ACC weekend games were played at noon or 1:00 last year.

So yeah, shaded seating might be nice over the next 12 years.

You are so far off, way off in your thinking. If the man didn't care, he would've sold the team to someone that would move the Dolphins. Then the county is left with a stadium and we all know how that ended before. If the man didn't care, he wouldn't be fighting to bring back the SB and College Football Championship games.

BTW, the tax breaks he is asking for both the Heat and Marlins organizations along with dozens of other professional sports franchises across the country...

Not so fast, my friends.

He would fund the $350 Million renovation, but only if he doesn't have to pay $4 Million in property taxes to the county every year.
Lulz. Always a string attached. He's not renovating ****. Doesn't care for the dolphins or canes. **** him
