UGA could get some good news later this month.
Sony Michel, who is the nation’s No. 2-ranked running back, will decide on April 26 between UGA, Miami, Florida, Notre Dame and Florida State. Michel is a 5-star from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Several recruiting analysts, including both Gerry Hamilton and Rusty Mansell of 247sports.com, are projecting Michel to the Bulldogs.
“At this point, Georgia seems to be the school trending with him,” Mansell said. “There’s also Miami and Notre Dame, and he took a visit to Florida this weekend.
“Just talking with some people close to Sony, Georgia seems to be on top right now. But nobody has told me he’s committing to Georgia.
“Georgia has been recruiting Sony for a year and a half now. It’s a very similar path they took to Keith Marshall, an out-of-state kid who Georgia recruited very hard to get.”
Michel is ranked as a 5-star and the nation’s No. 2 running back by the 247sports.com composite rankings, which averages the four national recruiting services (ESPN, Rivals, Scout, and 247sports).
Landing Michel would be a much-needed boost for the Bulldogs after the disappointments in this past year’s recruiting cycle. UGA lost its top target, Derrick Henry, when he flipped his commitment from the Bulldogs to Alabama. Next on UGA’s wish list was the AJC’s Mr. Georgia Football, Norcross High School’s Alvin Kamara, who picked Alabama over the Bulldogs on signing day.
UGA has three commitments for 2014, but none at RB after parting ways with George Walton Academy’s Stanley Williams a few weeks ago (it only went public last Thursday). Williams was encouraged to de-commit by the Bulldogs because he is still seriously considering other schools.
Along with Michel, the Bulldogs would also like to land Cedartown’s Nick Chubb, a candidate to be the state’s No. 1 prospect at RB, in this year’s class.
ESPN’s Kipp Adams tweeted, “… I think #UGA will fill its needs at RB by the end of April (Sony Michel and Nick Chubb).”
