Someone Who Knows Things

Another thing nobody is taking into account is how much Cam controlled the play calls and to a degree the personnel. Dawson had the easiest job on the staff thanks to Cam. He’s about to earn his paycheck next season, and with that 2nd half playcalling, plus the basic run schemes we run, we are in trouble next year. Teams are going to stack the box and our “great OL” isn’t good enough to run up the middle all game long on people.
I don't know. Cam checked out of a lot a run play calls and the opposing defense front was asking for it often.
He'd check to verticals walk around and move around and huck it deep. It's annoying a bit as a OC cause usually you set things up, and those kinda throw a wrench in it.
Cam certainly helped Dawson, but remember Dawson certainly helped TVD from Gattis.
It isn't binary Cam or Dawson, Dawson is an above average play caller, and Cam is an exceptional talent, together they both looked like studs, and now if Dawson continues to keep a top 30-25 offense next year, I'd be happy. Just need a top 25 defense as well and then we'll be a team that averages 10 wins a year as opposed to having a random 10 year win every what 10 years?

This is alternatively one of the most intelligent threads in canesinsight history with detailed, reasoned analysis and opinion, and one of the dumbest threads I’ve ever seen.

I won’t comment on which, I’m just going to enjoy popcorn throughout and let all of you think you’re on the right side.

Magical

If we don’t upgrade our QB, it’s hard to imagine much success. Anything from 4-8 wins is possible.

That needs to be our most urgent priority, and that’s been true since before Emory stunk up the bowl. Cam gave us elite talent and elite IQ. Mendoza wouldn’t have at least replaced the IQ part, but he’s off the board. Need to find someone with veteran experience and some proven production.
In your opinion, why do you think we are missing on so many QB’s?

Not @DMoney but this all comes down to resource allocation. We threw the majority of our NIL budget last year at a generational QB and still couldn't get over the hump due to how poorly our defense performed, especially in the secondary. It's clear we are being more strategic on how we're approaching the roster build this time around, and that, coupled with how few QB's that have jumped in the portal were worth getting into a bidding war for, is why I don't think we've been as aggressive.

Mensah is talented but $4 million a year for him is insane. I don't think Jackson Arnold or Miller Moss would have been worth the pursuit either. Outside of Mendoza and Mateer (who we aggressively went after), I honestly don't think there have been any other options that we 'missed out' on.

I think we’ve turned some guys down. Missed on a couple lower percentage shots.

You know how I felt about Mendoza. That’s off the board. I think Beck makes a ton of sense for both sides. Drones is more boom or bust, but better than our current options.

Do you think we are being to conservative with $? I’m sure you know we declined too many QB’s because we felt we didn’t need to go ham on QB’s this time around. The Emory debacle is backfiring on that strategy and we may be too late. Frustrating when we had the opportunity on several nice QB’s.

When do you think this is gonna finally come together for dmoney? I’ve been hearing beck and drones for a while now, when is the trigger, gonna get pulled on one of them?

Not really. Mateer got a huge offer.

I think we’ve been pursuing a riskier strategy. It worked last year. I’m more conservative- give me Mendoza and build the rest of the team up. Let’s see how it ends.

Here is how I would phrase the question to the “screwed without Ward” crew:

If you removed the QB from every team in America this past season and then ranked them, where would you rank Miami? So just ranking RB/WR/TE/OL.

Miami certainly isn’t #1 like they finished and that is a huge testament to Cam. Teams like Ohio State & Texas would still rate ahead of us. But this is still a ~top 10 squad with Martinez, arroyo and the OL. That is the point I believe D$ is trying to make.

Is that to mean the staff thought they had something in Emory?

The second half of the bowl game - ish

That’s what’s funny to me- I’ve been saying the same thing the whole time. It’s not a knee jerk reaction to Iowa State. We won’t be very good if we run a ball-control offense with Emory.

Nobody is denigrating Cam. It’s a fake argument. Everybody thinks he’s the best thing to happen to us in two decades. He elevated us to relevance.

I just think calling him a “one-man show” on offense is: (1) wrong; and (2) insulting to the other good players on this #1-ranked offense.

I’m glad @BoxingRobes brought up the 2023 team. To me, that’s the most realistic starting point- how much better can we be than that team? That team was better by the stats than the record (SP+ 28th overall), but sputtered because of incomprehensible decision-making at head coach and QB.

Where can we improve on that team? Is that enough to get us in the ACC mix? The margins are pretty close both directions.

this in bold...... It's something that has largely been ignored and Dawson given credit for it. If you rewatch some of the games, you will see how often he audibled at the line.

Replacing that part of Cam's game alone is near impossible.

With what we have lost, we are closer (right now) to the loser of the 2023 Orange Bowl than we are to the winner of that game. That is the opposite of the goals set out for Year 4 even by the greatest of slurpers or greatest of mopes. You discussed it in another thread - going backwards from 10 continues to **** the brand image in a time we are spending and NEED to be at the best we can appear to be.

We lost the top contributors from the offense - QB, RB1, 3 TEs, 2 OL and 4 WRs.

This is a great point.
