Someone Who Knows Things

Bet you can’t guess where he’s from.

Sure he can, hence the reference. Riley Williams wanted to be near home, and now he gets it...Oregon...STATE...

If he had picked Oregon, I think people would agree he was getting BOTH the comfort of home AND a top-notch program at which to play.

But Riley Williams only got one of those. Mateer only got one of those.

And I'm not saying that Oklahoma can't be good again at some point. But Venables is on the hot seat, OU is in the SEC, they lost a ton of good players to the Portal, and have only replaced those with some so-so Portal players (outside of Mateer). Not exactlly a recipe for one-year success (and I know Mateer has two to play, but Venables might be gone in one).

We may end up landing Mateer a year from now.

Builds at Miami have taken time… we have never been a quick flip… not sure why, but the only way we have ever broken into the elite were two slow builds. I can remember both Schnellenberger and Butch (Botch on the Grassy boards). Yes… I am old, having grown up as a fan in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.
Schnelleberger was 30-15 before the championship year. Butch was 31-15 before the breakthrough in 2000. Both faced different situations, but were able to get the team to good for several years before breaking through. I have no idea whether Mario is the guy to be our next Championship Coach, or whether he will be more like Richt who hit 10 wins in ‘17 and then regressed. This year we were good. We have to be good again next year, and not mediocre like we have been for the last 20.
BTW. I don’t but that Cam was wasted any more than Jim Kelly was wasted. They both elevated the program. The key is to keep it elevated.
College football is a different landscape today, but this is still a talent acquisition business. Mario was hired to acquire talent. He will be here through ‘26 at least. The university seems far more committed than at anytime in the last few decades to get this right. I hope Mario does, because I am not sure this alignment would be there again.
Both coaches had ONE massive advantage that no other coach will ever have.

Brings me to a larger point with the recruitment of Jeremiah. Goes to osu and claims to go there in part because he didn’t know who our qb. Would be. Both Miami and osu have similar seasons with the only reason osu getting in the playoff was conference affiliation. That’s a disadvantage Mario can’t control. Concepcion goes to an overrated sec program but the conference is more popular. Mario is making changes where he can but they’re some hurdles in recruiting out of his control.

It's quite alarming to me that we are entering Year 4 of the Mario era and this roster STILL lacks elite playmakers and general overall talent. The recruting at QB, DB, Safety, and arguably LB has been below average to awful. Player development hasn't been good enough at any position except perhaps OL, RB, and TE.

I thought the one thing we weren't going to need to worry about with Mario was talent acquisition. Yet here we are.

Is he overrated as a recruiter? Has NIL/portal neutralized this strength of his? Is it his inability to put together a legitimate staff, particularly on defense?
Valid points.

Miami hasn't had a WR drafted since 2020. People can say what they want about Saban and bags but those bags turned into signatures because he was putting guys into the NFL.

OSU has had four 1st round WR's in 3y

Great but he’s going in the first round development be damned so was Harrison they could’ve gone anywhere and been first rounders. So spare me with the development piece for program changers like that

How many five-star sure thing players have gone to Miami to disappear off draft boards?

The best thing about it is, they're going to force themselves to learn the hard way.
they tried the cam didnt take the easy plays and emory will and offense will be better until the Bowl game.

anyways, love the three most recent portal pickups. DB room hopefully will look way better on the field.

No doubt, there is a lot of work to do. We can't go into spring expecting Emory to be the starter.
I know Mario tries to keep everything under wraps and in house as much as possible, but what’s the plan here? Are they targeting a guy that’s currently in the portal? Are they targeting a guy that’s not in the portal but they expect to be in the spring? Are they targeting a guy who is still playing (Ewers)? I’m sure they will want their projected starter to be here for spring practice in 75 days.

Semantics. OK, we lost our clear #1, then our #4 and CJJ from the room. The room is not "stacked" to convert back to a rushing, ground and pound team or enough to compensate for a massive drop off from Cam. (And no, I am not expecting a Cam 2.0 to walk through the door)
There’s a big gap btw Martinez and Allen and CJJ. The only player you should be talking about loosing is Martinez, the other 2 guys r easily replaceable. Have Lofton play more FB and get a portal RB. Losing Martinez hurts but it does not completely stop this team from having a dynamic run game.

You believe that? The 2026 conversation will just be that we need to bring in a real QB. Idk if you've noticed but every year we alternate trying to fix a different group instead of a team.

Yes. The gap from Martinez to Fletcher and Lyle is the difference between winning and losing the bowl game. Martinez scores from the 7 on that drive.

Part of the point being we need elite RBs to have an elite RB room, not roster fillers.

Jeremiah had 11 catches for 200 yards and 3 TD’s in his first 2 games at OSU.
Amazing how quickly they developed him in just a couple of months.
(Yeah, sarcasm)

If Martinez went to Chaminade or Central we would be having a different discussion.
