Sign of the times: No elite talent

I have been trying to inform the folks at the West End Zone of this same thing, but facts make no difference

when you think about it, it was amazing that Golden got this team a few plays away from a 10 win season with the lack of talent to work with

Anyone can play that stupid game. We were also just a few plays from being 6-7 this year...

I think the same thing could be said about the opposite (see the VT game).

We can't play that game. We're a 9-4 team, we had a 9-4 result.

We need one of these guys to be elite for us in 2014. Who's it gonna be?

Pierre, Sr
King, Jr
Moore, Jr
Hamilton, Jr
Huertelou, Jr
Wyche, Jr
Moten, Fr
Jenkins, Fr

Wyche. There were some great Instant Impact JUCO's last season.

ASU WR Jaelen Strong
UK DE ZaDarius Smith
NU DE Randy Gregory
MD WR Deon Long
OSU CB Steven Nelson
QB Nick Marshall

Well now that we are seeing more JUCO's come in and make instant impacts I think it's Miami's turn and Wyche will be our big timer.

With this staff, I agree.

If Golden doesn't get TV back in the fold, it is a huge fail. That kid is a difference maker. A game changer.

I agree but how much could this true freshman who doesn't enroll early help us in 2014. Seriously?

Another staff (read better) would have had us playing in the ACCCG. We have enough players to have beaten VT and Duke. We were out coached, plain and simple.

Disrespect intended. Your post just said, with this staff I agree. Not sure how I take your previous post (directly above) to articulate your whole thought.

Explain better!

A couple plays a game is all it takes in a close game. Read this thread. http://www.canesinsight.com/threads/73439-Solid-Read-re-Football-Metrics It breaks it down very well.

Still the point remains. It is a tough position for a true freshman to make a significant impact in general. It has been done, just hard.

Simplified: The ceiling with this staff is the 9-4 record. Another staff would have had us playing in the ACCCG. In other words, the problem isn't the kids or talent on the team, but the staff. Understand now or do I need to draw cartoons for you?

That article states: "Big plays are probably the single most important factor to winning football games. The team more adept at creating numbers advantages and getting a guy into the open field, or the team that can simply outman its opponent and win one-on-one battles will almost certainly generate more big plays and win more games. And as pointed out in my Four Truths column, big plays also allow you to avoid killing yourself."

Losing Duke and Dorsett hurt us big time, according to that metrics article.

Cartoons are always preferred.

We have a good coaching sttaff. Not terrible not great. I believe The real test would be whether this staff can coach talent and take us to next level. I think not. I have not seen any sign we will out x and o any team whether on offense or D. The vibe the School is much different since Louisville and the Penn St flirtation . Bottom line-there are some less than ecstatic people (BOT, Donna and Golden) with the state of the program. This year is the cliff line IMO

How can we have a good coaching staff but then say we cant out coach anyone with equal or better talent? Wouldn't that suggest our staff sucks at coaching?

good means in my mind top 30-35. I think our staff is simply OK, which is obviously not good enough to out x and o teams with equal or better talent. Believe me, there are a lot worse (see Shannon, Zook, etc) and much better.

Oh, like how he tried to turn his back on the program at the first sight of greener pastures?

As someone already stated, Duke has no one on that list, yet they still beat us. How is elite talent relevant in those games?

Yea because everyone wouldn't take more money and go to their dream job.

Butch turned his back on us for Cleveland. Jimmy went to the cowboys. Howard left for a bad football league. But yea golden Is the first to do it.
The differences being

1. Those coaches actually achieved things here and didn't bolt once they realized they had no idea what they were doing (Golden)
2. They weren't complete **** ups who got turned down for those jobs

Golden is a lame duck now. The only thing left to do is to ride out the cloud he brought.

Possibly true. I'm just saying we need to stop acting like golden is the first to try and leave

And butch didn't accomplish anything big before he left. As far as wins. Talent he recruited is a different story.

You realize we only had 1 loss the year he left right?

You realize the team we lost to only played 2 whole other teams with a winning record, and should have been crushed by us? Under coker the very next season we beat the same team 65-7.

Butch was/is a magnificent recruiter. No doubt. But, if you dont remember him being a horrific gameday coach, then you werent watching the canes. Larry the clown walked in and did what butch will forever be incapable of: letting the team win. And won an nc. I could write a novel on his blunders, but the 99 ecu game has to be one of my faves. Goes up 23-0 and pulls starters in the 2nd ******* quarter. A team that beat us by almost 30 the last time he faced them. He refuses to put them back in until ecu takes the lead. By then, the O players were ice cold and game over. Also, in his first season we were preseason #10. We were unranked in a matter of weeks on our way to 8-3.

Props for butch and his recruiting genius, but it was a glorious day he left our sidelines.

even with the facts dead in our face we still want to pile on Golden.
- The 2011 class was a patch job you cant really count that class. the guy came on-board like 1 month before signing day. which included the dead period, in the middle of the fiasco. C'mon lets be real.
-for the past two seasons the most talented players on the team were freshmen and sophomores. Not best(developed, strength, experience), but most talented(god given talent, innate abilities)

Regardless of how good/bad of a coach he is, its obvious that we are just out manned on the field. Any coach can win with the right talent(Coker, Erickson). and we all know these guys inherited great teams, when they came here.

The guy guided us out of one of the darkest periods of Canes football history, but we turn our backs on him just as quick

No, he didn't win the Sugar Bowl against the Gators or anything. If Golden won a BCS bowl, or even the Rustled Bowl, don't act like you wouldn't have used that as a gauge for Golden.
