Shannon Dawson: Offense flashing, but "not anywhere near where we need to be"

Not being a Debbie Downer here, but Dawson is not inspiring confidence in me for our Miami Hurricanes.

I don't want to hear that things aren't where they need to be.

Year 2 with most of the same players.
Game 1 is in less than 4 weeks.
Year 1 was full of questionable play calling.

No excuses.

I don't worry when you know the talent is there. This isn't a situation where we hoped guys would make leaps and they're not showing it. This is likely about execution, which will come.

All the positivity during this time in years past resulted in what?

When a staff is turning the heat up like this heading into a season… they know what they have.

Foot on the gas now is the difference between 9-3/10-2 and something special. No room for complacency.

Eh, I’m not giving him a 100% pass but it’s tough to call plays when your starting quarterback is hurt/forgot how to throw and your backup can’t complete a forward pass. He could have done more to help when the proverbial **** hit the fan though. Defiantly sticking to 11 personnel when the tight end was just taking up space got me mad. As did using max protection sets against 3 man rushes. Although he kind of dumped all that max protection the last few games.
Who was the QB’s Coach last year?

My brother in Christ, the greatest QB whisperer in football history wasn’t turning Emory Williams into a good quarterback. At least not as a true freshman.

I noted that Dawson didn’t ace the season and did a lot of questionable things but I don’t know what kind of gameplan or play calling would have overcome the quarterback issues last year.

Fair post. He’s also been a journeyman for a reason and as stated in my original post, until he proves otherwise he is a threat. Ward could make him look incredible and get him a HC gig. Not saying Dawson a unfixable liability but am skeptical for now

If we’re gonna crush coaches for being journeymen, it’s gonna be a tough road for these dudes. They’re almost exclusively journeymen.

However, in Dawson’s case, he’s made numerous stops, but most of them centered around Dana Holgorsen.

Dawson’s first year coaching big boy football was 2011, under Holgorsen. That was Dana’s first year in Morgantown, and he snagged Dawson to coach receivers because Dana coached Dawson when he played. He spent 4 years with him, but it’s known that Dana is a very hands on offensive coach, so it’s not really a surprise that Dawson jumped at the opportunity to coach in the SEC at Kentucky, for a defensive coach, aka to have the offense all to himself. That year in Lexington was awful, but it was one year, and he went to Southern Miss from there. They were good for 3 years, and he jumped back with Dana when he took the gig at Houston.

Guidry is the golden boy around here, and I get it. I like him too. But what if I told you Miami’s offense was better than their defense in 2023 nationally in scoring and yards per play?

I actually like and am rooting for Dawson (I believe that the QB position and its deficiencies were more the issue in his offense last season) but his defensive disposition in interviews is not a good sign. We’ve seen this same disposition (evasive, short, snippy, irritated) from some of our numerous OCs over the years, and they were the worse ones. It’s not about your unit having an off day or being happy at this stage means your soft or can’t coach, it’s about believing in your abilities. When a person feels 100% accountable and is cool with that predicament, they won’t allow any frustration to spill out onto anyone else. Look at Guidry: always smiling, always personable, always transparent, always welcoming, and never defensive despite his unit not having the best practices or at times games last year. He deals with the good and the bad the same way because it’s all on him and he welcomes that.

We’ve had alot of nice guy player coaches but very rarely were they OCs.

Dawson is cool tho, he hasn’t done the action that guarantees he is incompetent and will fail yet, and that is to blame and throw his players under the bus after a loss. I don’t expect that from him.

Would not be one bit surprised to see the O struggle out of the gate vs the Gates.

If Cam and the receivers do not have their **** together we will see a lot of Martinez and many on this board will start crying about the play calling.

Strength of this team will be the D and they will have to win the day in Gainsville. It may take the O a few games to get going.
Yep. When the O is sputtering, Mario goes to his ground game. OL is a strength and thats what Mario dreams of. Run the ball. Eat up clock. Let the DL pin their ears back and create 3rd an longs. I dont care. I just want wins.

JJ was never happy either. Go back and see how his players responded. Dawson has to raise the bar. Fact.

Jimmy would flat out threaten to pull scholarships after bad practices. Had guys scared to death that at the end of the semester they were gone. It's probably my favorite JJ story...

Dawsons seems more hard *** than last year. He knows how good the O can be.
I dunno. When he said “I’m gonna end this ************ right now” against A&M I think that told us a lot

Tough to be a hard *** when your QB is incapable of completing a screen pass and confidence is in the toilet I guess

But a new year. I’m sure he’s well aware all eyes are on him

Kinda funny that statistically I think the offense was better than the defense (or improvements) but no one would claim Dawson is a better coach than Guidry based on last year
