second half dominance defensively

Lies, **** lies and statistics. Our D needs to get better, they were not good this past Friday. They were a one horrible referee decision, if the TD call would have stood, from blowing that game for us. They just never seem to step up and make a stop when we truly need it, I'm just not convinced that Guidry is the right guy.

VTech had guys running wide open the second half. But for drops and misses by Drones, they could’ve scored at will. And they had the TD called back on the bogus holding call. There was nothing impressive about our defense on Friday.

There was absolutely nothing "bogus" about that holding call on VT's TD. Stop parroting national media pundit garbage. I do agree that, overall, there was nothing impressive about the defense on Friday.

Those are also two of the more difficult positions to find elite talent.
And I mean Guidry is a secondary guy. I’m sure these conversations were had

It just didn’t work out. But also something has to give when you have to go get a QB, WR, several DEs etc etc

I’m not sure how good Damari is but his injury was definitely impactful from a personnel standpoint

Gotta implement more blitz schemes in the first half. Playing conservative gets you beat.

After seeing the screenshots of how their C had his hand inside the left shoulder pad area of our DLineman, ya, that was a hold for sure.

What about the times when Miami offense responded and scored and the defense still let Va tech get whatever they wanted. Not an excuse

Your recollection of events is off. The D stopped VT after every Miami score. 40 yards: 1 punt/1INT. The Miami O gave the ball up twice and punted twice.

We blitz often and that is not always the answer, especially when you fail to put the QB on the ground, or at least affect his throwing. defense. As an exampe, Iowa doesn't blitz often yet they play excellent defense.

But I think he has a valid argument that simply because you turnover the ball, you still need to stop opponent from scoring and in the case last Friday, our guys made it too easy.

Not going to attribute any of that to being handcuffed by 3 turnovers, turning it over at the 30 yard line, an interception that got VT into the RZ, etc? Held Tuten to 60 yards in the 2nd half without Bain, Barrow, or Harris.

Held VT to 10 points in the 2nd half and held them to a 3 and out to get the ball back for the game winning drive.

Maybe a bit off topic but does anyone think we keep Francisco in too long cause he’s the one with the headset?

Maybe @DMoney or other guys with knowledge can shed some light here
Previous games i saw Chase Smith with the mark on his helmet when he came in for Francisco. Now I wonder if Smith is hurt because I don't recall seeing him at all in the VaTech game.

"The defense has been a bit scattershot against the run, however -- it's 86th in yards per carry allowed, not including sacks -- which might prove costly in upcoming road trips to Cal and (especially) Louisville."

Concerns at DT and CB dominated the boards all offseason

Whelp. That’s what we saw.

Guidry is having to do with the secondary what he had to do with the DL last year. I don’t think the personnel is that bad, but now we have guys in the wrong spots because we have no other choice

Thankfully we picked up Hill in the portal but we needed at least one more impact player there. The portal was a huge success for us but that one still stings

Exactly my thought and concerns in layman's terms. Thank you! But we have a dire speed across the board issue. The secondary can't cover that much space (masking) and the lbs are too close to the line at snap. We need to send that simulated blitz 75% of the time imo. Kiko isn't fast enough to back out into meaningful pass coverage....so just send him.

Adjustments during VT…

Yea. Adding Horton on the last play to avoid a Hail Mary was chess… otherwise VT had their way almost the entire game…
had their way and ten points in the second half don't line up tho

Kiko is one of my favorite players on the team but the dude only has one gear. That’s forward at 100 mph

Popo is the guy I’m most excited about and it’s been good to see him get more and more snaps because he’s a more complete LB than Kiko. Sort of a combination of Kiko and Wes. So like you’re saying the more we can have these guys play to their strengths, the better off we are

Don't you think Cam turning it over helped VT a little?
That INT after the phantom holding call is what fueled Vtech. We go up 21-7, that game is over. ****, we may have won 41-7, But that turnover and return gave them hope. A team with hope and momentum is dangerous. VTech is not as bad as their record would suggest, they just haven’t hadn’t put it all together until Friday. They got some talent on that team. Our guys not being totally focused gave them hope that they could play with us, and the turnovers gave them the needed momentum.

Again, absolutely correct. Kiko is a downhill lb. He is (imo) Dan Morgan-ish in a Jon Beason type defense. If we simulate the blitz with him...send him...cause he's not going to be able to back out 7 yards into coverage in time to make an impact on average. Might as well create the pressure.
