Scapegoat Guidry

Mario was clearly calling someone out in his comments last week about recruiting. I don’t recall LG being mentioned by many (or any) of our defensive recruits so just putting pieces together, he and Mario may not be on great terms right now.
Mario better be careful. Guidry’s son gets out soon

I don't know how much of it was the on Guidry or not, but he inherited position coaches that Mario hand picked and didn't get any of his guys in until the DB coach this year so I think it is a bit unfair to put the blame on him for their recruiting failures (or it at least has to be taken into account). That said... DB recruiting was not particularly great this year either so...
When you make the $$$ these AC’s make, they have to be accountable!

Can you imagine if i decided to suck at my job for the entire year, i would be fired and there would be no one writing about a “scale goat” these are just lame excuses! Fire him and he will still be paid out!

All of those guys are really good and were all conference. Is the criteria where you were drafted or how you actually play?
You keep moving the goalposts.

First you said the front 7 is NFL guys.

I will say there is a little bit of scapegoating, or at least blame isn’t being fairly proportioned. Guidry absolutely deserves to be fired, BUT the reason we are not playing this weekend is that the offense didn’t show up against GT. If you told me before the game that GT would he held under 30, I would have said that means we win 45-28. We struggled to score 23 against a bad defense. And then against Cuse, we knew going in that it would be a shootout. Expected both teams to score 40+. One of Cuse’s scores was a fumble return TD. That means the D gave up 35 pts to the 2nd best offense in the ACC. That’s… actually not that bad. The UM offense did its patented second quarter swoon and then we were playing catch up. So even though the defense wasn’t the Steel Curtain, I think the offense should get a little more blame than it is getting for those two games in particular.

It’s not just on the HC to recruit talent. wtf has Guidry recruited since he’s been here? Dyoni Hill? Also our talent isn’t great on defense especially in the secondary but you can’t tell me Duke, SMU, Pitt, etc. are loaded with absolute studs to where they can put some what of a decent defense. You don’t need a 5* at every **** spot. Truth is, the scheme sucks and the players aren’t being developed and that’s on the backend and up front. Whole defense staff should get the axe after that performance this year.

That Syracuse game the defense deserves all the smoke it’s getting

I am not defending the man..BUT

the majority of canes fans, myself included, felt Guidry was a good coordinator based on his season last year with a vastly more talented defense.

Now the fanbase wants him axed.

I’m playing devils advocate here. Is he really to blame? Or is “recruiting ace” Cristobal to blame for not finding adequate “jimmys and joes”?

I think it’s the latter. i think our talent on defense was worse than we all thought going into this year.
The defense literally couldn't lineup or pass off coverage, it was Guidry

I’m not at all. I did say NFL guys, not drafted. All of those guys I mentioned are studs in the NFL. Look, I’d take him and think there’s clearly an element of development within his scheme. But to act like he did it with a bunch of untalented players is true

Syracuse was averaging 32 ppg. Our defense gave up 36 pts. Our offense scored 38 pts. We were averaging 45 points on the season . You can do the math. Even though we scored a full TD less than the season average, defense still did enough that the 38 pts would have won the game if not for the fumble return.

It would have been nice for the defense to hold Cuse to 28 like it did against GT, but I’m being realistic. The defense was struggling in ACC play. The offense just needed to reach its season average (not an unreasonable expectation) and we are sitting undefeated right now.

Cuse could not stop our run game. Martinez was averaging a ridiculous 5.5 yards per carry. But for whatever reason, Dawson didn’t like sticking with that.

The only scapegoat is the head man.
But 99% of this board continues to focus elsewhere.

One of the most famous old investment adages says that every day you don't sell an asset, you've essentially made a decision to buy it again.

It's a great way to analyze assets. Staying put without thought, or holding without analysis, is lazy. Assets need to be evaluated every day; i.e. I currently own this asset...would I buy it again today? If you wouldn't buy the asset today that you already own, then the correct decision is to sell.

Applying this discipline to our DC, if he wasn't already on the staff would anyone want to hire him today? If not, he shouldn't be kept around.

Miami's defense is so bad the win probability with a 21-0 lead at Syracuse was only 33.3 %.

I am not saying that he should be kept around; I was specifically addressing the not having the personnel piece being blamed on him. Imagine your job is to sell widgets and your boss had picked a particular factory to produce those widgets and you were locked into a least a year with that factory and they only produced 1/5 of what they had promised, but you were not allowed to switch to another factory.

I realize this is not a perfect analogy and it would seem he underperformed even taking into account the quality of the personnel, so plenty to blame him for but I don't know how much of the lack of quality personnel you can blame him for.

Half the reason we didn't reach the season average on offense against GT is because GT ran the ball down our throat and kept the offense off the field.

Guidry did say before the season they didn’t have the numbers at db and that we needed another 1. We had no nickel all year. Not an excuse for how bad we were, but was def the biggest issue we didn’t address in the portal

It's on both, Guidry and Mario.

But Guidry gets more blame for several reasons....
- The worst unit on the field was safety. That's his position unit.
- CBs were bad too and that unit belongs to the only defensive coach he brought in.
- The lack of in-game and game-to-game adjustments. We saw the same failed calls all season. At least try something different instead of accepting continued failure or false hope something will spontaneously change.
- Mario is the HC and can't go anywhere with his contract. If you choose to work for him, you need to understand if something goes wrong, it's going to be on you and not him. If you agreed to not have more control over your D staff, that's also on you.
This Mario contract looks like an Albatross on the program. God helps us all.
