Half the reason we didn't reach the season average on offense against GT is because GT ran the ball down our throat and kept the offense off the field.
After we went up 10-7, GT scored to go 14-10 at the very beginning of the second quarter. We punted next series after 5 plays. Then our defense forced a
3 and out. Yes you read that correctly. Got the ball back to the offense almost immediately. UM then has a turnover on downs after 11 plays. And the our defense gets
another 3 and out, GT gained -2 yards. That’s now back to back 3 and outs forced by the defense. Gets us ball back in good field position. And what did we do? Yet another punt after just 5 plays.
Long story short , after GT scored a TD with 12 min to go in the 2nd quarter they didn’t pick up another first down in the entire half until they had around a minute left and still didn’t do anything. We had 3 possessions in that span and did zero with it. So no, GT did not keep the offense off the field by running the ball in the first half.
Oh but wait- there’s more. We got the ball back to start the second half. After a 4 minute drive, we turned the ball over again on downs. That’s 4 straight possessions where we got no points. Now GT starts running the ball effectively and scores a TD to go up 21-10. We answer with a TD. Score is 21-16.
Next drive our D forces a fumble, but we don’t get the bounce. king recovers, GT then responds with another TD. Now it’s 28-16 at the beginning of the 4th quarter. Hey, plenty of time for our explosive offense to catch up. What do we do next? You guessed it- another turnover on downs.
GT gets the ball, and shocker- our defense forces ANOTHER 3 and out. GT had the ball a whopping 1:40 seconds. We get the ball back. We finally do something with it and score a TD. Now it’s 28-23. Need a stop. And… the D gets a stop. Forces a punt. Our Heisman candidate qb has 2 min to go 80 yards. Have to be feeling good now. And then a sack fumble and game over.
GT had the ball a long time because UM kept turning the ball over. How many? 4 turnovers (3 turnovers on downs, and
One fumble ).
So let’s tally it up. 10 total possessions-
3 TDs
1 FG
4 turnovers
2 punts
And now let’s compare to the FSU game where we dominated them. Want to guess how many possessions? 8 (not counting the run to end the game).
So you tell me. If the narrative is true and GT was running through UM and chewing clock to keep the offense from touching the ball , how is it that we actually got 2 more possessions vs GT than we did in the fsu game?
Fact is, the offense had plenty of opportunities against GT but the offense just flat out failed. You can’t possibly think that 4 turnovers and 2 punts is on the defense.
