Scapegoat Guidry

I don’t think this is the worst take. Safeties and lbs were awful and dbs were sus. But to me that falls on the owner of the unit. Just like any business. If a unit doesn’t have the right personnel it’s on the leader.
I don't know how much of it was the on Guidry or not, but he inherited position coaches that Mario hand picked and didn't get any of his guys in until the DB coach this year so I think it is a bit unfair to put the blame on him for their recruiting failures (or it at least has to be taken into account). That said... DB recruiting was not particularly great this year either so...

Mario was clearly calling someone out in his comments last week about recruiting. I don’t recall LG being mentioned by many (or any) of our defensive recruits so just putting pieces together, he and Mario may not be on great terms right now.

Two things can be true here: Our talent on defense was overrated, and Guidry is bad.

In 2023 Guidry had two really bad games against UNC and Louisville. We chalked it up to Guidry not having enough talent on defense. Also both those offenses were pretty elite. That was true at the time. Neither of those teams had to really outcoach/outscheme Guidry (although they still did). They were loaded with good players in good systems.

Fast forward to 2024. We thought our defense was going to be better with exception of secondary. For the first few games, the front 7 did look better. Secondary was playing ok, not really giving up big plays and making tackles when needed. USF game really exposed us. I now wonder if our defense would have continued to struggle in the 2nd half if their starting qb had not gotten injured. From then on, it was motion, shifting, and misdirection from every offense we faced. Guidry had no answer. It was so bad, it was comical at times.

I'll need to go back and watch some games from 2023 season to see if teams ran as much motion and shifting as they did in 2024. Seems like Guidry's defense performs much better when the opponent's offense just comes to the LOS and stays in that formation and does not send anybody in motion. Looking back to GT this year, we forced them to punt on two consecutive possessions in the 4th qtr. They went conservative and made it easy for us. After that late turnover and GT needed a first down to ice the game, they used motion again. Easy first down. If Cal hadn't gone ultra conservative on offense, we don't have that miracle comeback.

My point is for 2024, Guidry is getting flat outcoached/outschemed every game. It's not like some of these OC's he's facing are some offensive masterminds. Nor were any of these offenses that we faced this year elite. I saw enough of Guidry's coaching and scheme to say this was on him. He's not the scapegoat. He was the problem.

I'm not saying that I want him fired, but one more year of confusion, poor alignment, and poor tackling, then he needs to go.

We gonna do this for 8 months?

Mario and the staff failed at acquiring anything resembling adequate talent on the back end.

Guidry and his staff failed miserably at taking the talent they did have and maximizing it.

That’s it. Everyone failed. Everyone is at blame. Let’s not do this till next August. It was a total failure. Mario isn’t gonna fire himself. Guidry gotta go.

Rumblings are he's not the most well liked.

Could just be I'm hungry though.
We have reached the “not well liked” rumors level of the game.

Not well liked: Gattis, Addae, Guidry

Imagine spending all that time interviewing ******** only to realize too late that they are ******** that also aren’t what you need to succeed. It is like not kneeling more than once. That’s a lot of failures for a super savvy alpha.

From “elite human beings” to “not well liked” when the success is not there!!!

God I love Miami Football!!!

We definitely need an infusion of talent in certain areas on defense and not all of it should be attributed to Guidry. Can't over-emphasize how poorly Addae's recruiting efforts have hurt the present state of the secondary. I wasn't too familiar with him as a coach when he was hired, but was optimistic based on the targets he "landed" while at UGA. None of the translated here and it really begs the question as to whether or not he had any real influence in landing players while at Georgia.

But Guidry was clearly out-schemed during many games this season. There were plenty of communication issues on the field and a number of players regressed throughout the year. Some of that should be expected as the season goes on and players get banged up, but it looked excessive from my view. IMO, it's time to move on from Guidry.

That's fair - and believe me, I am not trying to defend Guidry here but how many DCs are playing a large role in recruiting?

But let's say he is lacking in the expectation that Mario has for recruiting - did something change between last year and this year b/c they supposedly gave him a large salary bump to keep him from leaving. Was he recruiting (and not seeing results) prior to the salary increase and has since regressed? Was part of the increase that he increase his recruiting and he didn't? Again, not trying to give Guidry a pass, just trying to make sense of what Mario says/we hear and then the actual actions that we see Mario take.

And related to DB quality/depth/etc, we heard all sorts of rumors about Addae not doing his part in recruiting and that the players didnt like him and yet Mario kept him for another year (so he could find him a landing spot w/o having to fire him?). Whether Guidry is a good coach or not, certainly keeping Addae around for another year did not help.

Yea....Every week I hoped they had a meeting and acknowledged how bad the D was and they needed to get really creative to mask some of the holes..but it never seemed to happen (or it just didn't work). I also don't recall any second half adjustments that made a difference either.
I think S.FL and Wake we're the only two.

I am not defending the man..BUT

the majority of canes fans, myself included, felt Guidry was a good coordinator based on his season last year with a vastly more talented defense.

Now the fanbase wants him axed.

I’m playing devils advocate here. Is he really to blame? Or is “recruiting ace” Cristobal to blame for not finding adequate “jimmys and joes”?

I think it’s the latter. i think our talent on defense was worse than we all thought going into this year.
This is probably the reason why Mario doesn't publicly fire him. I don't think he's terrible, just not great for the level we want to play.

So he probably knows he's gone and is looking for a landing spot and a new coordinator is probably already in the works behind the scenes.

Both can be true. Guidry is poor as DC and Mario is an overrated recruiter and an embarrassing game day coach and terrible at gameday preparation and in game adjustments. Miami has bigger problems for 2025 than most on here realize. They have a litany of holes to fill.

Yep I thought did you did a pretty good job last year and yes I still think he ******* hast to go about an hour and a half ago this year. It’s one thing to have a bad Defense it’s another thing to have the absolutely worst defense I can remember in my entire lifetime of following the canes. You just had to be mediocre and we would be playing today despite all of our faults. Good coaching helps bad talent Be mediocre if you want to say we had no talent.

I. A see this but it doesn’t explain the lack of ANY changes. Changes in scheme and changes of personnel. At various points of games changing up the personnel couldn’t have made it worse, regardless of how Inexperienced the backups were

I’d imagine Harris couldn’t feel too good about himself and his abilities.

Yeah it was the players calling stunts against a Georgia Tech team you knew was going to do nothing but run the ball. SMH

Guidry has to go. Maybe he'll be better at his next stop. But he wasn't just bad this year, he was atrocious.
