Two things can be true here: Our talent on defense was overrated, and Guidry is bad.
In 2023 Guidry had two really bad games against UNC and Louisville. We chalked it up to Guidry not having enough talent on defense. Also both those offenses were pretty elite. That was true at the time. Neither of those teams had to really outcoach/outscheme Guidry (although they still did). They were loaded with good players in good systems.
Fast forward to 2024. We thought our defense was going to be better with exception of secondary. For the first few games, the front 7 did look better. Secondary was playing ok, not really giving up big plays and making tackles when needed. USF game really exposed us. I now wonder if our defense would have continued to struggle in the 2nd half if their starting qb had not gotten injured. From then on, it was motion, shifting, and misdirection from every offense we faced. Guidry had no answer. It was so bad, it was comical at times.
I'll need to go back and watch some games from 2023 season to see if teams ran as much motion and shifting as they did in 2024. Seems like Guidry's defense performs much better when the opponent's offense just comes to the LOS and stays in that formation and does not send anybody in motion. Looking back to GT this year, we forced them to punt on two consecutive possessions in the 4th qtr. They went conservative and made it easy for us. After that late turnover and GT needed a first down to ice the game, they used motion again. Easy first down. If Cal hadn't gone ultra conservative on offense, we don't have that miracle comeback.
My point is for 2024, Guidry is getting flat outcoached/outschemed every game. It's not like some of these OC's he's facing are some offensive masterminds. Nor were any of these offenses that we faced this year elite. I saw enough of Guidry's coaching and scheme to say this was on him. He's not the scapegoat. He was the problem.
I'm not saying that I want him fired, but one more year of confusion, poor alignment, and poor tackling, then he needs to go.
