Saw This On Grassy

Eff you, Randy

Oh how I miss that lousy scoreboard, crummy PA system, decrepit bathrooms, front yard parking, and *** kicking atmosphere. This game however.....

Randy Shannon was never even top 5 in total defense in ACC against ACC opponents according to CFBstats.com.

Better than Goldens? Absolutely but not something to praise him for when he was apparently one of the best defensive minds in CFB

Duke was horrible during Shannon's tenure. Everyone uses this as a point to crap on Golden but Duke proved time and again they were no doormat this year playing FSU tough and almost beating A&M. We should have won this game (up 10-0) and it sucks but 2013 Duke is so much better than 07-10 Duke

Shannon's recruiting declined horribly over his tenure while Golden is at least staying consistent in that he is doing "pretty good"

Shannon hitched his wagon to the 08 class and it was working until Whipple ruined Jacory and Shannon stopped recruiting.

The only similarities between the two tenures is that Golden and Shannon are both at a turning point in their 4th year where they need to take the next step and win the coastal and 11 games to make the fan base have a small ounce of hope that they could be the right person for the job

Both showed some progress in getting to 9 wins in year 3 but year 4 determined / will determine their fate

Golden may get a 5th year due to NCAA b/s but this year will determine if this guy has a shot at being successful here

Can you think in context? Each team will be a completely different team year in and year out. Play for player, is Duke bigger, stronger, faster or more talented than Miami THIS YEARi? No! What happened? We were outcoached. Granted, the players folded also, but isn't that also a testament to coaching?

If that was Randy not only losing to Duke but getting blown out, he wouldn't have even made it to year 4.

Bulls--t. You were upset about a losing to Duke based on Duke's past. If you were going to draw a line THIS year, it would have to be because of the VT game, not the Duke game. Think.

I believe with all my heart that Miami has a case of the "Bambino Curse" going on with the OB's destruction.

See ya'll boys in the championship in 100 years..

It all comes down to Randy>Dorito, or more specifically the conventional single-gap 4-3 Over defense>>>>>>Al Groh's dinosaur 3-4.

Just because Shannon was turrble (and he was) doesn't mean GoRldon can't be worse. It's not an either/or proposition. I see it more like a GW Bush presidency followed by Obama. Real bad got worse.

IMO Golden > Shannon. Think Shannon was one of the most ill prepared coaches in football history, there is a reason he is a position coach now. Golden's defense crushed his ability to succeed here (his 3 day flirt with PSU didn't help either).

That said I guess we will see what type of product Golden puts out in 2014. It might not be far off when comparing these 2.

Golden vs Shannon

AG has 1 more win in 3 years
AG earns more than a million more
AG lost to Duke, RS never did
AG has never beaten FSU, RS did
AG has never beaten a good (10+ win) team, RS has
AG has the worse defense in the ACC, RS hasd top 3 consistently
AG played the easiest schedule in Miami history in 2013 (Miami finished with 9-4 record)
RS played the most difficult schedule in 2009 (Miami finished with 9-4 record)

I will support AG- even though i am completely off his train..but this one thing I don't believe to be accurate.. there was one year I think in the late 80s where we played the champion of almost every conference..can someone help me out with this one? thanks

1988.

So is the point here to bring back Randy Shannon? Bc I think we all know AG blows at this point. I mean, do we really need a "which unqualified coach is worse" thread?

I think it's more of a "why the guy with a worse record get a pass and the former player turned coach did not" thread. I'm sure it all comes down to "the cloud" though, so it's really a moot point.

/and when I say "the cloud" I am in fact referring to the recruiting prowess of one Lawrence Edward Coker.

RS took over a program that was 25-12 the previous three seasons, was four years removed from a BCS appearance, five years removed from a title game appearance and six years removed from a national championship. Talent-wise, Shannon's first team had the following players (and still went 5-7):

Allen Bailey, Damien Berry, Matt Bosher, Calais Campbell, Graig Cooper, Antonio Dixon, Dedrick Epps, Jason Fox, Orlando Franklin, Tavares Gooden, Richard Gordon, Leonard Hankerson, Javarris James, Darnell Jenkins, Lance Leggett, Colin McCarthy, Eric Moncur, Derrick Morse, JoJo Nicolas, Adewale Ojomo, Kenny Phillips, Anthony Reddick, Darryl Sharpton, Sam Shields, AJ Trump, DeMarcus Van Dyke and Reggie Youngblood.

Miami still had a "winning" culture at the time, outside the disastrous 2006 year—7-6 ... Louisville logo stomp ... FIU brawl ... Pata murder ... four-game losing streak down stretch before miracle win over BC. Prior to that it was 9-3 and 9-3 before the four-straight BCS game era and the 46-3 run.

As for that "win" over Florida State in 2007, it's laughable that anyone would actually "credit" Shannon for that. C'mon now.

Outlasting a garbage 7-6 Seminoles team by some miracle play by Kirby "1-of-14" Freeman is hardly the same as Florida State 2011-2013 which Al had to face.
