Sapp making news for being Sapp

I wanna know where yall are from. Seriously.

I been working with black folks my whole life. Playing ball with black folks my whole life. Worked at a majority black school for trouble youths. And I'm into custom cars so my secondary hobby, next to football, leaves me around tons of black dudes. I'm the ONLYwhite guy on my semi-pro football team. Literally, the only one.

NEVER. EVER. Have I ever seen the word "boy" become an issue. I have a loose mouth but the only word I refrain from using is the "N" word, out of respect. I'm 99% positive I've used the word "boy" or referred to my teammates/friends as my "boys" a million times and it's never been an issue.

You know them you STUPID FUCHER............. Friends Strangers Friends Strangers two different words

You dumb *****, I'm not just referring to MYSELF using the word "boy", I'm talking about it being an issue PERIOD. If it was a real issue you'd think I'd know, right? Since I mostly hang out with black folks.

CONTEXT!!!!!!

Jesus Christ!

well clearly you don't talk to those black men much but I'll play devil advocate and start a poll to prove my point

Hey guys what can I get you to drink...... works.......hey fellas what ya having what would you like to drink?....... works..........

No this women chose to call a table full of black men BOYS LOL OK SURE SHE DIDN'T MEAN ANYTHING BY IT

Do you believe she does not refer to all tables with a bunch of guys in the same way, including white guys? She's probably never heard a complaint like that before because most everyone else is reasonable and understands the context of what was said. This is not about being called boy, this is just about being an *******.

Did she call him "boy"? Or did she refer to multiple males as "you boys". That's a huge difference. I've certainly had waitresses greet my wife and I as "you guys". I don't think she was calling my wife a guy. It's generic and meaningless. If Sapp or anyone wants to make it something else, it means they are looking for a way to be offended. And, if you look hard enough, you can always be offended.

If we are ever really gonna make progress in race relations, we have to stop this overly sensitive bullsnot.

Yeah, I don't talk to the Head Coach I worked under for 4 years or the 40 members of my semi-pro football team. We never speak. The neighborhood I learned to play ball in was all black but I never spoke to the guys that lived there. I just played ball, shut my mouth and went home.

Still no comment from you about CONTEXT.

If I kept a list of everything I've heard that somehow offends blacks, it would require two years of paper production to fill it out.

I was raised in the South, and it's always been 'good ol' boys,' 'come on boys, pull! 'You boys must be related to _____.'

You know what, you can be offended anytime you wish, at every friggin' moment, of every damned day, all year long, year after year, and I don't give a good goddam.

Bunch of taco slits who have no sense of humor, no sense of self esteem, no sense of personal worth, but manage to get all offended because they were somehow "DISRESPECTED," when in reality, they haven't done one damned thing to be respected over.

I saw a thread was closed. Exactly what I'm talking about.

You've gotta be kidding me!

There's a huge difference between "boy" and hey boys. Especially coming from a chick waitress. There've been many times when out with friends of different ethnicities, where we were called "boys". Amazing someone like Sapp chose to make a big deal out of it. Should have told the chick to her face instead of *****ing out like he did.

Sapp probably never heard "Ballin' Boy" by No Good.

But it dominates on a lot of Hurricane videos.

Exactly. Someone posted the quote from the waitress stating she just said "Hey boys, what I can I get you to drink?" I've been asked this same question almost anytime I've been out with the guys in any setting with a waitress. Get over yourselves if you're offended by this.

Ran into a similar example at breakfast today. Female server addressed my mother in law as madam. All 4 of us chose to recognize it as the polite interpretation rather than assuming she was referring to her as an older woman who manages a brothel, escort service or some other form of prostitution, that is, a procuress.

Imagine after that stressful introduction, we ordered, ate, paid including tip, and then left - without incident.

That is all fine and dandy. But as a black man I am not going to allow someone to call me a boy.

What are you gonna do?

****.

Cause I bet you been called "boy" in the same context as Sapp was a million times.

The word "boy" is thrown around all the time and it's never a problem. Now some famous football player has a problem with it and all the wannabe Al Sharptons come out of the woodwork.

There's a big difference between a white person being racist and a black person LOOKING for racism.

In a considerate and respectful manner I would ask to not call me a boy. I don't care what your intentions are and you may be the most humble person on earth but don't call me a boy.

It is that simple and I am not sure why you are having a hard time understanding.

You're as dense as Sapp is if you think that the ditsy little white girl knows the difference.

SMH

It does not matter if she knew or understood what she said was offensive. Ignorance does not exclude anyone from the consequences of their actions.

White People Please listen.

If you don't know a black male personally or friends with him do not refer to him as a boy. That is a racial slur. With you being a stranger people have no way of knowing your intent. So this can be taking as a sign of disrespect.

It is that simple.

I can totally respect others feelings on this eventhough in my 34 years of life I never once knew "boys" regardless of context was or is a racial slur. I guess I only envisioned "boys" being a demeaning word if used by some "southern plantation owner" in a movie... you know, like "git over here, Boy!!!". I myself would be offended if I was spoken down to like that.

I guess my whole issue with this Sapp situation is the way he went about punishing someone, who like me, may never even have the faintest clue they may be offending someone. Take 20 seconds and explain why "boy" may be offensive to you. I have yet to really get an answer myself in this thread. Than go about your buisness. The whole snide remark on the check "Boys don"t tip" and not leaving a tip just reeks of pettiness from a grown *** man.

I'm Cuban. I've heard plenty of backhanded compliments and ignorant comments/questions myself. I know there is no comparison between each others struggle in this country. I get the " you speak english so well" all the time... sorry we all don't sound like Tony Montana... I get the "how do you have Blue eyes??" or "you don't look Cuban... You must be mixed"... I usually respond with"what do Cubans look like?" and than give a little history on my family's island... the point is, I could let someones ignorance affect me negatively or Chalk it up to people don't know what they don't know and go about my day and know no insult was meant. I once had a Scottish girl who had just moved to Miami tell me "Wow, alot of people really hate you guys." when she found out I was Cuban. I just laughed and said "no one told me."

Today I asked 2 black co-worker (both in their mid-20's) if they thought "boy" was offensive if it is not meant to be offensive. both answered no. I gave the scenario if they were eating at our Job and one of the waitresses asked " would you boys like a drink?" would it offend them? both said no. One guy said " that ****es off people?" We all agreed it's creepy if a guy waiter would use "boys" because it sounds more sexual than anything. I have never refered to men while behind the bar as "boys", but not because I think it would offend anyone... It just comes off kinda weird.

All in all, If "boys" was the deciding factor for the non tip... that's just stupid. There is a saying my mom's boyfriend used. "me offende el que pueda, no el que quiera"... Its not if you want to offend me, its if you can. you have to really try. Intent is very important.

P.S. that photo of the receipt should never have been put on the net.

Again, call any man, black, white, latino, asian, etc a "Boy" in a certain context and tone and it can be taken as a sign of disrespect. Don't know why you want to make this something that only black men get offended by.

As for "boy" being racial, GTFOH unless it's preceded by n*gga boy or something like that.

SMDH.. with everything else going on in this country and the world, we have 8 pages of discussion on this!

This is the biggest joke I've ever seen. I've seen black guys get sensitive about a lot of things, some warranted and some not, but I've never seen any of them get offended by a waitress referring to a group of them saying hey boys what would you like. If she said hey boy ...., maybe, but apparently you guys (hope that didn't offend someone) aren't from the south or you'd realize most waitresses speak to a group of guys that way. Any guy with half a brain would understand there is no intent there.

Here's a perfect lesson for you. You guys tell me it's ok when black guys say nig*a (sad I even half to throw in the asterisk so I don't offend anyone since I'm not black, and I'm not white either in case you wondered), because there is no ill intent, but you ignore intent whenever it's convenient and someone who is not black is talking to you. This is hypocrisy at it's finest. It looks to me like you're just choosing something to ***** about.

Obviously this is not directed at all black folks, but just the ones who miss these fine details.

i dont think he said only black men could be offended by the word, but if you dont know the historical context in which it was used against black men then i dont know what to tell you because asian white latino men were not subjected to the same treatment the way black men were this goes back to slavery days and jim crow laws afterwards, both of my grandfathers whom i have talked to lived through that in the deep south in Mississippi and they were called boy among other words as a term of disrespect. so dont tell me what i can and can not be offended by as a black man if you havent been in our shoes dont speak on it.

as far as sapp goes i wasnt there i dont know what was said or how it was said, and could really give a **** about his tipping habits or lack thereof, but this thread has transformed from arguing over tips in to white guys telling people what should and shouldnt offend black folks. yall can keep that **** to your self or the mods can lock this ****, straight up
