Safety play..

This was a failure of the stupid way MC is recruiting. Recruit all the positions not just one position group per season. I rather have 1 good safety, 1 good CB, 1 good LB, 2 good Dline than have a good dline and scrubs in the back.

I go back and forth on this. On one hand, he needed bodies (good ones) which required to go all in by position group. He wanted to focus on OL first and then DL the 2nd year. I get that because it shores up trenches and you build your roster from the inside/out. However, what you're starting to see is the lack of stagger and a in high degree of failure or chances at portals. For last year, I mean, how many undersized DEs are you gonna take in a class?

I dunno what is going on but these guys look like they are playing confused and mentally overloaded and so are in a bad rhythm and a step late to deciding where they need to be after the snap.

Even assuming the talent is weak they are playing even worse than that.
theyre poorly coached overall (at DL, LB, and DBs) and theyre not uber talented physically to make up for their mistakes (Kiko is slow as **** and should have been benched weeks ago, Meesh is slow but only one who can call out signals, harris is just bad, the corners are trash aside from OJ (inlcuding porter who is not good).

I know the guys last year LOVED guidry.. felt he was their favorite coaches.. I also know they were emphasizing and really good at communication on back end. James Williams was the best at that I was told.. Knew the defense in and out and they over communicated to make sure everyone was on the same page.

But the defense seems fundamentally broken to me, any sight of motion and people are confused and someone is wide open. This is from game 1 to now. GT wit a QB who can't throw was able to generate offense with ease just shift and motion.. if your scheme can't handle that in today's game, your scheme sucks

as Cribby i think said, its a chinese fire drill anytime anyone moves. just send a man as a decoy late at the line and the entire defense is ****ed.

My concern with the safety play is bigger than Meesh and Harris playing terribly

Kam was one of our best players on defense as a freshman and became an AA as a soph and quickly became enemy #1 (or 3-4) before he left for his play

Harris isn’t a world beater but he slowly progressed his way to playing time and has become a liability as a starter

Meesh was solid at UW and is now cranking out horrifying performances at the position here

It’s not much to go on, but are we sure that just getting better players in here is gonna solve a problem? Can’t really call it a trend yet but it’s concerning

It's not that we thought we were good-- everybody knew DB was a weakness-- but there is only so much money and so much supply. We got an expensive Portal safety. This was a failure of high school recruiting.
If we paid alot for a primarily slot defender to come be our safety then yea something is up with portal evaluations

Somebody seriously needs to sit with jaden and watch his tape, im not saying he’s good but bro he literally looks like he’s 3 seconds late processing information. Like he’s literally a robot out there man

Meesh is just flat out bad

Sure but compared to last year, why the drop off? We did a lot more with less last year. This year we have more and we’re doing a lot less.

What is staggering is that we’re at game 10 and we’re having basic issues that you’d expect to have game 1-2 with a new DC. This is his 2nd year coaching the D, we have more talent at DL and we’ve taken 2-3 steps backwards from a year where we were decent. Something is not computing.

Overall defense has a pretty decent rating (20s/30s iirc) - what’s killing us are big plays and situational football.

The DB room can be argued that we do not have more. We lost couch, jDavis, kinchens and JW.. and didn't upgrade any of those positions..

Idk if anyone realizes it. Not everyone follows recruiting. I don't think his evaluation are good either specially at the skilled positions.

JDavis was a mid player and we all know the issues JW and KK had last year. I can't imagine that our defense has had a precipitous drop b/c of JW/KK leaving considering we theoretically upgraded everywhere else.

I agree he was a mid player, problem is we have guys playing even below mid level right now.. we can't even line up and cutting guys loose wide open multiple times a game.. mid players would be welcome right now

Also I think u are underestimating their value because they had some catastrophic negative plays.. but there can be 70 snaps in a game and we can't even line up now play to play now..

We have 2 weeks to train and prepare Damari Brown and Zay Patterson to replace Harris and Powell.

Harris and Powell simply cannot be allowed to continue sabotaging the game each week.

I guess this is a hot take but the talent on defense was better in 2023. And if you want ot argue that this year's group is more talnted, well then you cannot argue that they've out-performed the 2023 version. Taylor, Kinchens, Williams, Flagg, Harvey, Hunte, Deen, Cloyd, Couch, Davis, Keontra would be playing ahead of their replacements in 2024 for the most part. Guidry is the problem but he and his staff did poorly in restocking the cupboard this offseason in retrospect.

Thank you D$ for the factual info, but what is really impressive is the number of opinions, speculations and down right HorseS**t that all these great players and coaches willing to impart their vast experience roaming the HS and D1 sidelines, … or not. Just sayin”If it looks like, smells like,.. you know the rest

Well, we went from 2 NFL safeties to Powell and Harris.

It's not shocking that communication has broken down.

1. I don’t want a coach on my team where their scheme only works with nfl level talent. Communication and alignment are standard requirements that take no physical skill to be successful

2. Every other team has to deal with talent departing each year for different reasons… look at the top 30 scoring defenses, the majority of them are doing it with talent far less than what Miami has

I get DB recruiting has been subpar the past few years, but there’s major problems with this defense outside of talent.

If Miami considers itself a top 10 program, Mario needs to hire better coordinators
