Response to Hurricane Club Fundraising Email

To pout and stomp your feet and say you're not going to support the team until they start winning as much as you want them to seems a lot more childish to me. If my kid came back with a bad report card, I might get angry at him, yell a bit to put the fear of God into them but I won't tell them to start studying and get better grades and then come back to me. I would sit down with him and help him study and try to improve until he gets better grades. Because the Canes have some issues, I'm not going to to stop supporting them in the only way I can as a fan to punish them or send them a message. How can I as a fan help the Canes during this time? I don't think the answer is to stop supporting them and berating their every move.

Nobody is saying that. It's about knowing exactly what one of the major problems is and refusing to fix it because it would involve firing your friend. That **** gets you fired in the real world.

I responded with my 2 cents as well.

So you sent in your annual Hurricane Club contribution. I'm proud of you.

Actually I used a very complex formula to calculate that contribution....I sent in a penny for every quality opponent Golden has managed to defeat the last 3 years.

I was even nice enough to let him keep the ******* change.

You aren't putting the fear of god into a multi million dollar business such as the university by "being mean". Your money and my money over the years have gone towards a program that has made three consecutive unqualified hires. By continuing to pay you are essentially stating you are satisfied with their effort.

What exactly are you doing, as an effective method, to foster change at our once proud program? I can help my child do his homework b/c I'm an adult with advanced degrees. I cannot however coach a football team, or study film, or run a strength program. Even if I could, NCAA rules prohibit me from being an additional coach. There is simply no choice as fans that will actually get change done other than to politely and firmly tell the university "Dear So and So: I love UM football, have been a season ticket holder for years, and willingly donate my money to UM football. However, the product has been horrible for 10 years, and I cannot in good conscience support it anymore. I would gladly donate if the University intends to hire an elite coaching staff that will make Miami proud, so if help is needed in that venture, please contact me. Thanks"

I fail to see how the above statement and sentiment is anything to be looked down upon. But maybe thats just b/c that is essentially exactly what I wrote to them.

The idea that we need 4-5 million for a coach to win is infuriating to me. Yes, it would probably take that much to keep a guy around here long term but in our history that has never happened. Miami's job has historically been a spring board for the NFL or another opportunity.

There are plenty of innovative offensive and defensive minds that would love to make 2 million a year and have the opportunity to win big at Miami. Its our admin's job to find those guys and so far they haven't done a good job.

Shannon was an innovative defensive mind who had top-rated defenses and a closet full of coaching awards.

Golden was praised by everyone in the know for his ability to turn Temple around. Since he's been here, he's been courted by PSU twice, UCLA, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

I hope you are kidding.

I see you completely missed my point. Anyway, we all love our team in our own way, but we should continue to support it.

I will continue to buy season tix, donate to Hurricane Club, and give my money to the Canes.

Not because I support Al Golden & Staff, but because I'm a irrational fanatic and I like torturing myself.

This. I cant help myself

Unless you are donating significant amounts they are not listening to your opinion or money.

I see I'm not alone-- my reply to the Hurricane Club's solicitation:
To whom it may concern:

We do not want, nor do we need “pep talks” from “Ray Ray” about what it takes to be a champion. You see, we lived it at the University of Miami. (note that’s in the past tense.) We understand what it takes, because we were a part of it, well before we became the “U”—which is now an embarrassing symbol of mediocrity. There is a serious undercurrent of discontent amongst alumni, and fans at present; this will turn into apathy in short order. It’s already in motion.

When the administration and athletic department pull their collective heads out of the sand, by confronting coach Golden, and forcing him to fire his hand-picked Defensive Coordinator (who also allegedly is his best pal, and Godfather to one of his children) then I, and many like myself, may reconsider donating once again.

It is apparent our Head Coach is in complete denial regarding the performance of his Defense scheme, and the abilities of Mark D’Onofrio, the man charged with teaching, and executing it. Our Defense has ranked at the bottom of the ACC in almost every category, and among the worst in all of Division I football teams nationally—two years running.

Rather than confront this issue with forthrightly, Al Golden assumed the persona of “Baghdad Bob” while cherry-picking statistics to support his case when appearing on the Joe Rose Show, and later, during the press conference at the Hecht. In doing so, he insulted the fans and alumni by positing that the Defense was “trending” up. You may recall this canard? It didn’t take but a few hours of research and simple analysis to debunk “rah-rah Al’s” claims that “ALL IS WELL.” Mind you, this occurred in the midst of his flirtation with his alma mater, Penn State, and following three days of radio silence, which also featured the “de-commitment” of our #1 defensive recruit.

Did you see our Bowl Game versus Louisville? We were ill-prepared, played with little emotion, or intensity— and after nearly six weeks of so-called practice and preparation. Al Golden and staff were completely outcoached in every phase of the game—as they were in several other contests, some we won despite their incompetence.

So please, rather than appeal to a restive and disgruntled alumni base, who’s withstood more than a decade of mediocrity, and an embarrassingly poor product on the field-- Ask Ray Lewis if he’ll cover my dues for the coming year. Granted he’s retired, and now living on a “fixed income,” but I trust you’ll have better luck appealing to him than a large portion of current/former Hurricane Club members—who have seen more than enough, and who’ve had enough.

By refusing to replace our Defensive Coordinator, among other coaches, Al Golden, the administration, and the powers that be are guilty of dereliction. Al Golden is suffering from a crisis of confidence amongst a large portion of the fan base. Our once proud football program is at a precipice; teetering dangerously close to irrelevance.

#1- You have a vested interest and some amount of control over your child-- the ability to influence the outcome. We have none of that as fans who follow the program. The only way we "affect" change is with our words and our wallets.

#2- to stop financially supporting them is really the only way to get their attention-- unless Blake James plans on holding focus groups. To continue to support this program with your dollars, given the obvious changes that should be undertaken-- but the HC refuses to entertain-- to "support" this monetarily is akin to throwing money at the problem. Your aiding and abetting-- rewarding mediocrity. What part of this don't you get???????

#3- ".... to put and stomp our feet until the team wins?" Have you actually watched these games? Don't you find it maddening? And it's not like we're snake bit and its something new each week that jumps up and beats us. Its US-- our own team, the pitiful defensive scheme that shows itself week in, week out, that's a unmitigated disaster-- and a HC who refuses to acknowledge it, let lone take action to rectify it. Why? B/c his buddy is the DC.... dereliction of duty. Period.

What color is the sky in your world, really?

And I thought OP's email was concise and respectful. Even if you disagree with him, you have to respect his stance on the matter.

You are right. This has been a stepping stone to the NFL. We have done our best with that type. The nesters, Larry and Randy were disasters. I had hoped Al wanted the NFL, but perhaps he was a PSU nester that missed his chance. The problem is that the university likes nesters; they don't have to work to find new coaches. It appears they are not very good at it.

Just because the sky is falling in your world doesn't mean he doesn't have the right to support the program in his.

So is there a breaking point in the I'm going to withhold money to prove a point movement?
-at what point do you then become part of the problem and not part of the solution?
-at what point does your ability to complain and make change become neutered because you are part of the *****ing but not helping crowd?

Just asking.

Sounds more like you're "just saying" if you ask me. But I'll play along.

My comments in no way restrict his ability to support the team as he see's fit. So I haven't infringed on anyone's "right" as you insinuate. I simply was pointing out what I saw as flawed logic, or a point of view counter to his. My take is clear.

I find it interesting that people who blindly support the program hold themselves out as the "voices of reason" and then attempt to paint people who are critical of it as "Chicken Littles" (e.g the sky is falling). To my thinking, the sky already fell-- it happened when we lost to VT. That was my personal breaking point-- and followed a GT game that was far too close. The 3 TDs in the last 6 minutes obscured (ever so briefly) the real problems I was beginning to see with this coaching staff.

I suspect other people who feel the way I do- their sky fell subsequently with Duke, then the bowl game, then Golden's intransigence/denial about how bad our D really is-- and his failure to zip his best bud and DC.

I'm the problem!? You didn't really just lay down that tired, radical 60's slogan did you????? I'm one man on a message board. I can only HOPE to "affect" change. The real problem with our program sits in an office at the Hecht. They're they ones with the keys, pulling the levers. Nice try, but if anything, vocal people who are critical of the status quo stand a better chance of "affecting" real change than those who stand by "hoping" things improve.

Your last comment-- why is it you assume critical comments and complaining will become neutered? So let me understand, by going along to get along, I'm helping to fix things and this will foster positive change? I cant recall an instance where a much needed change came about by standing by, idly. Change almost always comes about with a clash of ideas and an upsetting of the status quo. Remaining silent is a tacit approval of the state of affairs.

This man is spot on!

One bad defensive coordinator is not going to change my love for the Hurricanes or make me stop supporting them by not contributing to the Hurricane Club.

Truth

One bad coordinator isn't the problem. Team has been horribly managed and staffed for over 10 years. If you think firing D'Onofrio is going to suddenly turn this team into a BCS level program you are completely clueless.
