-Morris is very rusty. Very inconsistent tonight.
-Ryan Williams keeps impressing me on his reads. There are some throws that are a split second late - perhaps arm strength, perhaps late read. But he is patient and manages it well. Throws such a catch-able ball. he also, throws the wr open at times which i find it to be very encouraging.
-Olsen is incredibly raw. Stands tall, showed some of his athleticism and "escapability", continues to show arm strength, but for every good throw there is a pick or an almost pick. Too similar to morris at this stage in his development. After his first season in college, and looking to next year, it would shock me if Ryan Williams is not cemented as QB1 come April. Olsen would have to take an enormous leap.
-Coley is simply what we all know, the best athlete on the field and the kind of elite talent this staff needs to assemble and not miss out on in order for this program to advance. No major insight there. It is just that watching a slow developing swing pass to him turn into a blaze is truly a sight to see.
-Oline to me is very hard to judge in these practices because of whom they are facing.
-Defensively, the only noticeable changes: Bush and jenkins in the back. Crawford instead of howard, was odd. Thurnston made a few plays on skeletons and 11-11. Kid could really make the jump from soph-to-junior. Still hearing that the feeling as of today is DP is leaving.
-Gilbert really pushes the pocket from his end when in a 4-3 line-up. Personal note: after having seen some practices through out the season, it is unfortunate that he did not fit into the desired scheme. It never failed that the day I went, I would see him force the qb take a step inside. Shame.
-Green got abused by Walford a couple times when the TE was lined up over him in run blocking.
-Carter is playing a lot with the ones, Bush and him communicated a great deal after the play.
-Jelani, Ufomba, King and Moore are being rotated during these practices more. Of that group, Ufomba to me is showing push, athleticism to beat his man. Just not sold on what hamilton is showing so far BASED ON THE RANKING HE CAME IN WITH (his injuries may have set his development back). King, surprisingly so, has been getting some push. But then again, our oline does not have AA inside, so hard to judge.
Personal note #2 (You don't need to read this: I am and have been on the "our defensive philosophy is the problem" bandwagon. Last practice and tonight I have come to confirm that even further than i thought i could. The amount of "windows" in our defense to throw to are negligent. Further exacerbated by a lack of pass rush. The problem is that our mediocre talent is exacerbated and exposed more with this kind of defense. I watched Hurns and coley make catches in front of lb's. In one instance coley caught the ball in front of Cornelius (a snap shot of talent gap in one play) and I asked myself, how can we compete when we are asking our LB to shade/check/cover a guy like that????? In space??? (been asking the same question all season).
That is all. Hope it gave you all a bit of taste if you were not able to be there.
