Taking only Emory and Judd after Jacurri was always going to lead to this situation.

Don't even try to tell me they didn't want to risk scaring off Nickel by getting a better QB last year. If we signed a QB who was good enough to scare Nickel, then we would have a starting QB right now.

Our recruiting dept needs overhauled - so I think your last paragraph could be true.

In the past, we used the portal mostly for backup roles - dumb if you ask me. This year we are better about signing quality. But you can tell our portal strategy is still evolving.

Nope, half the board has been saying for months that Wario QB's recruiting strategies are flawed and not organized to the level his pay should require and that the fact that he has not been able to sell the Cam Ward Experience to portal QBs is malpractice and probably an occasion that he will never have again. Ever.

I don't agree. I just think the bar was set SUPER high with Cam and everyone has their own favorite QBs they would prefer as a portal QB....especially with the money being thrown around.

I think many struggle with the all or nothing optics....last year it worked with Cam but this year with Mateer it didn't....and now they are spooked that whatever QB brought in won't be enough to offset the play of the Defense like Cam did (especially with no DC yet and still trying to bring in DBs) and the loss of the top 6 players in receiving yards (X, George, Horton, Brown, Arroyo and Martinez). The only players returning with more than 100 receiving yards are Lofton (150) and Fletcher (106). That's a lot of production to offset.

If it allows them to make louder arguments about firing Mario, yes they are rooting for us to lose terribly next year. Not like we haven't seen that with Manny and Al and Randy...

Last year we also kicked the tires on Will Howard and had him in for a visit. This year, coming off a Heisman worthy season with Cam and the prospect of pure disaster with Emory, we haven’t even had a single portal qb in for a visit. Maybe there’s some super secret grand plan that Mario has to land a starting qb, but right now it sure looks like this has been completely mismanaged.

Yeah, and that's why it would be smart to start retooling the offense with a real and capable QB1.

Smart and Wario don't go well in the same sentence though.

Even last year the strategy was flawed imho but, at least, they were trying to land on their feet in the eventuality that Ward stayed in the Draft.

Agreed.

I have zero idea what our plan is here.

Who is even left as a realistic option? I can’t think of anyone other than dudes who already committed elsewhere or declared for the NFL draft. I wouldn’t call those “realistic.”
