QBS in the Portal as of 11/28

Find me one team which needed a portal QB and they had nothing to play for (i.e. no bowl, meaningless bowl, bowl already played, no CFP) that has been uninterested in the QBs market like Miami. You will find no one.

Spare with the “but Mateer” he was never coming here or with “they are working in silence”: no QB visited Miami in the first portal window. Enough said.

If you want to live and die with portal QBs fine, but at minimum be ******* aggressive with it.

Malpractice at its finest.
Oh don’t get me wrong Mario played this offseason like a fkn moron. They got ****y with landing Cam and assumed because of his fake ***** macho ego that he’d stick it to Venebales and he didn’t. Now he’s left **** in hand with no option praying a playoff team QB decides to leave for UM which has about a 10% chance of happening.

Was that the talk? I don't remember this one. I remember him coming from UNLV and he wasn't bad over there
Maiava isn't bad, but once Cam announced for the NFL draft, a lot of people were advocating that we move on and settle for Maiava, etc.

We didn't settle and it obviously worked out. This year is obviously different and there aren't any Cam Wards out there, but I'd rather be patient than pull the trigger on some FCS guy and not actually get any better.

they have to have a back channel deal set up with somebody already right? Either they thought Emory would be better( questionable thinking) or they have a deal In place, to not even have someone like Mendoza with his ties visit is questionable process.
I think it's been said on here he was here and was aware we weren't his first option. We let him walk. I would have taken him but we shall see.

Bowl game was misplayed from a “leverage” standpoint. Whatever they truly thought of him, they at least had the whole “we can just roll with Emory” angle. Price went UP Saturday.

Anything ground breaking??

No, it's a cautionary tale of missing on your HS evals & taking a chance on developmental QB's who lack arm talent.

There is no such thing as being overly reliant on the Portal for QB's, because in today's era it is virtually impossible to keep a HS recruit QB on your roster for longer than 2 seasons & not play them.

If you recruit a QB outta HS & he doesn't play as a TF, the odds of him transferring are well above 50%.

The QB carousel has mirrored the Coaching carousel; literally every offseason QB's have transferred in mass to new programs, just like Coaches do every offseason.

So the idea of being "reliant" on the Portal for a QB is a misnomer. Literally every team in CFB is reliant on the Portal, because players are constantly evaluating their situation & being recruited/offered money to move.

Indeed I don't see why you would take a development QB in today's college football if your standard is winning. Neither judd or Emory looked like they were going to be starting power 4 QBs coming out of high school.

HS Quarterback Recruiting today, IMO requires you to really scout the home base well and find QBs with actual traits (arm talent >; but also, just a guy that can run or command an offense - the between the ears stuff). Local players that allow you to develop them (because they aren't going anywhere) while you churn through portal QBs.

How different of a situation would we be in if we had, instead of Emory Williams, Judd Anderson, and Big Poff as our backups, we had Ferny Mendoza, Lights Out Jenkins, and CJ Bailey (two of which would have been layups as seniors in high school if they had real Miami offers)...and THEN we are adding a Luke Nickel (arm talent take) and maybe one of those guys transfers out.

One staff has no idea what they are doing at QB after the portal guy...the other doesn't have to go far to look for a QB and gets better talent that is more likely to stay and develop.

Flo said that same thing about Milroe at 1:19 mark of this vid 😅

I think milroe would do well. Unfortunately, lots of mocks have him in the first round (which I think is nuts). I guess one can hope Gronowski has a Max Brosmer like impact on the team next year but fcs transitions are not reliablwn

South Dakota State QB Mark Gronowski is entering the portal. Lead the Jack Rabbits to 2 national titles. He’s also thinking about going pro. Miami should go after him.

It's the bolded that really gets me. Based on the second half playcalling and what we saw from Emory, I don't think he was anointed 2025 QB1 by the coaches. So I have to imagine they had Mateer as the top guy, likely followed by somebody who's team is still playing football. And if there was no plan B to Mateer, then they were just being straight up negligent with the roster.

You aren’t even seeing all that much instant success/impact from the top-rated QBs. A lot of 2025’s 5* at the position are long-term projections. So many more young QBs are with trainers now but what are they learning? The off-platform, and on the move stuff is great for getting likes and your followers up, but how many really understand drop/read/progression? Why so many of the successful NFL rookies are guys who’ve played so many games. Almost renders recruiting top QBs out of HS to a waste of resources

With the portal, the QB position in college has become like the NFL. Gone are the days when you recruit/draft a first year player and develop them. They have to be the guy off rip. If they’re not then you’ve set your team back big time and you’re gonna be on the QB ferris wheel until you hit.

At least in the NFL you can still get a quality back up and keep them around. Can’t do that now in college because any decent QB who’s not starting will dip and find another school.

He threw for 3700 yards as a junior and carried a bad team to a bowl. UCLA was 33rd in scoring offense that year and 115th in scoring defense. They also had one of the worst running games in America (126th in yards per carry). After Rosen left, they didn’t make a bowl for three years.

Definitely a pro bust, but he was a good college passer.

U’re looking at the raw #’s. That 3700 meant nothing, like I said. It was empty calories. He wasn’t a good QB, I saw him live, & u’re isolating one season. Everyone knew he would be a bust.

It’s like buying a lottery ticket. Likely will never see the field, but there are undervalued QBs that hit down the road. Could argue Cam as an example. Taking a flier is fine, but you better have legit QBs in system or money for the portal
