QBS in the Portal as of 11/28

I truly don’t think we end up with Mendoza, but am bringing this up because it was a fun group chat discussion:

How many wins do we have in 2023 with a guy like Mendoza?

I would say 9 wins with Mendoza in 2023. He is very similar to Drew Allar.

If you had a guess, who do you think we end up with this year?

Am I the only one who would be happy with 2 years of a QB that would perform similarly to Drew Allar? Didn’t Penn State win at least 10 games the last 2 seasons? If the coaches surround Mendoza with talent and he isn’t running for his life half the game, I feel like he could be pretty good.

8 we beat gt. Second thought I say 7 still. Tvd lit up a&m and I don’t know if Mendoza would’ve had that type of game

Ga Tech and NC State are definitely wins.

UNC and FSU I think are not as easy to call.

We still lose to Louisville.

So maybe 9.5 wins. We likely aren't in the ACCCG though.

People got to keep in mind with the mateer stuff, we just went the route of having an elite qb therefore paying more money there but still had pressing issues defensively to address and it end up biting us in the end. Why not try someone like Mendoza who has a lot of things in place offensively and take the left over money and address the pressing needs on defense

Honestly I would say 9 maybe even 10. I think we definitely beat NC state and the GT wouldn't have been that close. UNC, FSU and Louisville would all be toss up because of how solid those teams were.

With an improved defense? Let's say a modest 10 ppg better. Nothing astronomical.

9-3.

Why do you think Miami might not be going this route? Seems like Miami loves him in which case it sounds like a slam dunk.

Mendoza ain't going to win you any games.

He ain't going to lose you any either.

Technically we beat GT with TVD but the refs decided a RB being on the ground doesn't count as down by contact.

I could accept Mendoza as the QB if UM stacked the roster around him. We would need a true #1 WR, and basically the entire defense needs to be replaced. Some players earned their roster spot- Mesidor and OJ. I have doubts at nearly all other defensive spots. As much as we criticize the secondary, the DL got zero pressure. I don’t think Bain is going to go back to DE and be as effective, so he gets moved inside. Can he work as a DT? And we have 2 other good DT prospects. But I don’t see a dominant pass rushing DE like we have had in recent years. I don’t trust Bissanthe or Popo. I think we need 7-8 new starters on D and a true #1 WR for Mendoza to get us to double digit wins, especially with next years schedule. Or you pay Mateer a lot more than he can get from another team and he can us to double digit wins on his own. I think the latter is a much simpler strategy.

Why 2023 and not 2024?
It’s just hard to imagine this team without Cam because he’s so central to what we do. Everything is built around him and he’s the best player in the country.

2023 seems like a better starting point for what it might look like without Cam. Hopefully, our talent outside QB is better than that team since we are in Year 4.

10 total
9 regular season wins
+ bowl game

GT for sure is a W and then one of the other Ls is a W. Best guess is NC St.

I’d say 9.

Bigger question, second time you’ve hedged on us not getting him. You know something the rest of us don’t?

Nobody is Cam and we don’t seem to have the funds or interest from elite talent to fix the defense how it needs to be fixed thus far. Major setback IMO because Mario’s slowness to make decisions.

The problem with that is every year is different. In 2023 a game manager is the difference in maybe 1-2 wins. In 2024 a game manager is 2-3 losses. We seem to have more holes to fill in year 4 than year 2. I'm reading how we need to overhaul the defense and coaching staff for 2025. Do you think that is a better spot? Or do you think the guys that didn't play this year are the answer for next year? I'm not ready to write anybody off outside of Harris and Bissainthe.

I’d take an elite QB over a good defense 10/10 times. We cannot build an elite level defense from one portal offseason. It can be good, but not good enough to carry us to the goals everyone has.
